In the same theme as "what do you name your computer", I'm equally interested in what you name your wifi network.

I've seen these suggestions before, and they're still awesome.

I used to have dirty wifi names, such as "PornHub Router 004" until I had some co-workers over one day and they asked to connect : \

So I later changed it to "searching…"
and now when people come over, they complain they can't find my router ; )

        • +7

          Haha, I like searching…

        • Holy crap, I thought I was the only one in the universe who came up with that little piece of genius. I guess I'm not so original after all. I'll have to think of something new.

    • +1

Yeah I've got AFP Surveillance Van

    • +1

      I've got ASIO_VAN005 and ASIO_VAN002

    • Any particular reason you use 3?

If they have the same configuration you can use the same name on multiple access points and devices are smart enough to use the best one at any given time.

More fun are the ones I've seen in passing, like "Mum use this one".

  • Depending on the access point one is connected to, WAP-01 all the way to WAP-03. For guests, they connect to Guest-01.

    • Do your guests have restrictions?

      • +1

Yep, they can't access the printers or file server or any network settings. No browsing restrictions though, if they're brave enough to watch porn whilst visiting that's their problem

    • +5

Why not just use the same name so clients can roam between them?

      • I read somewhere that it could cause problems with packet loss. Is that really the case? At any rate, my devices just connect to the strongest signal available.

I wonder if it would make people peep out from their windows, or get out on the street hoping to get into the photo shot !!

    • I'm about 600 metres from a maccas and I can still see their network. Pretty amazing.

In range at home I can see "no more free wifi c**ts", it's only secured with WPA(1) so I'll fire up aircrack one day when I can be bothered.
