About Eric Kim

Eric Kim is a California based international street photographer. He has been shooting street photography for over 9 years and started a blog to share his work and lessons learned in response to the lack of information and resources he found when starting out. Today Eric is so active in the social media and blogging world that it is virtually impossible to miss him. He pours his heart and soul into serving the street photography community at large and teaches workshops internationally.

Hmmm, Eric's posts on petapixel.com often border on the nonsensical, and his images - high contrast, no composition, seem very stereotypical "Street photography" to me. Maybe I'm bias, I feel like street photography is the new hdr.

    • Street photography has been around much longer than HDR. Just browsing some of his pictures, I see what you mean about high contrast but don't think its necessarily a bad thing, and disagree with no composition. No composition is still a composition. :)

I don't fancy Eric Kim's work. imo, his street photography is basically shooting directly in people's face with a 'wtf' expression.

That said, that is his definition of street photography and getting the courage to shoot at people's face. Some of Daido Moriyama's pictures are like that, but his tells a story. That separates the men from the boys.

Eric Kim likes shooting in Jpeg… Uh.. Okay

EK: I don’t think there is a right way to shoot street photography, as there is no right way to paint a painting or write a book. I do believe there are guidelines and fundamentals that certainly help in street photography. For example, I find it’s best to use your viewfinder when shooting in the streets — if you have one — instead of shooting from the hip. The downside of shooting from the hip is that you can never get your framing as accurately as your eye; you often get skewed verticals and if you get caught shooting from the hip, you might get more in trouble than just shooting openly and honestly.

Really? Who shoots a camera from the hip?
