Any comments about MSI and their customer service / product quality etc vs EVGA, Gigabyte and Asus? I know EVGA does well where as Gigabyte and Asus do average but where does MSI fall?

    • +2

As a frequent browser of the PCMasterRace subreddit ive heard a few horror stories of their support so id say around Asus level

    • idk about their gpu but i find my msi gs-70 laptop quality was pretty bad

    • +2

at the lower end but theyre all the same pretty much except EVGA who do alright

    • +6

In regards to customer service and product quality….
My MSI HD 79xx (can't remember model number right now) video card died early this year after about 2.5 years of use.
I emailed MSI and once I sent the purchase info and serial number, they asked me to mail it to them and a few days later they called and asked if I'd like an R9 290 rather than a repair. I said yep and it was here a couple of days later.

      • +3

Most of the horror stories ive heard are from USA or Europe

Never from Australia for any company

Worst case scenario you pull out the ACL

        • ACCC only steps in on widespread cases effecting many people (eliminating the need for a class action lawsuit by the public), they don't deal with individual cases.

Best case ACCC will redirect you to your local consumer disputes department which will assist in resolving the dispute, though even they can't force anything.

The only way to force action is to charge back the payment and have the merchant chase after you if they believe they still deserve the funds (they will have to take you to court), or you take the merchant/company to court yourself.

Hmm i was going to wait till i finish exams to get a new GPU but this deal seems very good

Do you reckon better deals will emerge around mid november considering that the 1080Ti has been revealed

    • +2

prices will only go down and should since theyre been at a high all along since release

      • Anyone have any other theories about this? Mine is yhe 1080ti will be here around FEB meaning the price of the 1080 will fall however the demand over xmas will increase and may result in the prices staying quite flat as availability is super low of both the 1080ti and 1080s? Hope that makes sense, any other thoughts?

        • +6

I would say the 1080ti will release on Feb then goes to sale in March and then out of stock everywhere until April and stock start to come in early May at RRP.

        • @Bnjam3:

At what price point do you estimate this will drop to then?

Never looked at a gaming rig so no idea how prices normally affects GPUs over time.

        • @cheepo: not much for brand new unless its clearance as this price is way below rrp and almost the same or cheaper than private import. but i would say you will easily buy a used on for $500 after couple months of the 1080ti.

        • @Bnjam3:

Good to know and that's not a bad saving for waiting 6 months or so.

          Thanks for the insight.

        • +1

@cheepo: Gtx 1060 or even 970-980 will work just fine if you are looking for 1080p gaming.

        • +1

          @Bnjam3:

More then enough for my requirements then. I really don't need a gaming rig (have enough to play on consoles) but need to get one thanks to all the humble bundles that get posted here!

        • +4

@Bnjam3: I don't see them releasing it until AMD comes out with Vega. Releasing the 1080ti before that will only hurt their 1080 and titan sales since AMD doesn't have anything to compete with the 1070/1080 and titan atm. From a business perspective, why would you release something that competes with your own product, especially when they are making BANK selling titans since it can only be bought directly from nvidia.

EDIT: oops replied to the wrong person, it was supposed to be directed @redwards

        • @Hunga: Yeah I was pondering this very question when there were rumours of it being unveiled in January.

There is a significant market of PC users who usually go from Ti to Ti so there is that market

Also releasing it this early will put the pressure on AMD before they even begun. They'll have to be competitive straight out of launch and that means their profits will be cut

        • @GossipGoat:

There is a significant market of PC users who usually go from Ti to Ti so there is that market

For those people who only buy ti cards, releasing it early or later doesn't change their bottom line at all if all they buy are ti cards regardless

Also releasing it this early will put the pressure on AMD before they even begun. They'll have to be competitive straight out of launch and that means their profits will be cut

This only makes sense to do within the same month the AMD cards are going to be released otherwise you are going to take away titan sales, which i think is mostly selling because they basically have a monopoly in the high end GPU market atm. The AMD cards are expected to be released in 1H of 2017 not even 1Q 2017, so I think a jan/feb release is a little optimistic

  • MSI or EVGA…. help wanted?

    • +2

This is my predicament too. Get this MSI card locally or buy the EVGA 1080 SC from newegg (with higher core clocks, led, backplate) for an extra $40. Leaning more towards the EVGA.

      • +1

Personally id go for the Evga, youre gonna have to deal with manufacturer warranty in either case so id get just get the peace of mind knowing that EVGA offers the best support for nvidia cards and also the backplate helps keep temps down by a fair amount

        • Yeah I agree with you. Any thoughts on the SC vs FTW version which are the same price?

        • @muzzling: oh wow if theyre the same price then definitely the FTW. This is the top of the end EVGA card (excluding the classifeid) so itll have the highest clocks

        • keep temps down by a fair amount

Even though it isn't attached to anything producing heat, what a remarkable device.

      • Links to Newegg please. I'm sure a lot are interested!

    • +3

I'd be leaning towards MSI after seeing my cousins experience with them. He had a 780 lightning that he bought from amazon and it died after almost 2 years. He spoke to amazon first and they wanted him to ship it to the states which would've costed heaps, so he decided to contact msi to see what they could do about it. He ended up driving 15 minutes to MSI's office in sydney and they dealt with it including shipping, and even lent him a 780 twin frozr to use in the meantime.

Whereas if you had to deal with EVGA, you'd have to ship it to taiwan (usually at your own cost). Of course i'm not sure if this is still the case, because it was about 2 years ago. But it does seem fairly good.

But of course, if you are just in it for the aesthetics just go for whatever floats your boat

  • +6

I bought a 1080 (gigabyte g1 gaming) when they were relatively new and paid about 1100, this is by FAR FAR FAR the most I have ever spent on a computer part, and honestly the performance is amazing! the rest of my rig is about 5 years old, i5-2500k but the 1080 is carrying the whole thing, solid over 100fps in any game I have thrown at it so far (overwatch / doom etc) on a 1440 monitor.

I know its expensive still at 800, but imo worth every cent, as regard to brand I can only speak about Gigabyte and i'm thrilled with the card

    • +2

100+ fps on 1440p? Damn thats crazy

Have you tasted forza horizon on it

      • I have not, sorry :)

      • +4

        It's delicious!!

      • Forza Horizon is a bad console port. He will struggle to get even 60fps in some areas.

    • Good to know!

How much ram do u have? DDR3 I suppose?

Personally i can't justify spending this money on a card :(

      • +4

nope, DDR2 and my mobo is old to the point it becomes unstable if i run it at the full spec its meant for so run 16gb at 1333,

the 1080 cares not, it just destroys lol, i was so nervous splashing out that sort of cash but was home off work due to an operation and it was my birthday so treated myself, months later i'm still in love with it!

    • This is exactly what I wanted to hear, I'm on an i7 870 one gen older than yours and wanted to upgrade my r290 to a 1080 (to celebrate the new Forza). I can't justify upgrading the cpu or mobo as the pc's rock solid but wanted to know if the 1080 would benefit on such an old rig. The other consideration is I've a Dell 30" 2560 resolution screen I prefer gaming on a Sony 75" lcd tv so unsure if fps would be a factor.

  • dunno if I really should buy from futu since I contacted them through ebay yesterday morning and still no reply today :(

  • Is it 3yrs warranty?

  • I'm not a gamer but wondering isn't it cheaper to have an Xbox one or PS4 . I thought all the games are made for those game console ? Interested to know what the advantages are..

    • mouse + keyboard is just so much better for alot of games, imo

    • -4

a 960/970 last gen would be more equivalent to Xbone and PS4.

1080 should be compared to PS4 Pro and the yet to be released Scorpio for 4k gaming.

      • Xbox One and PS4 is closer to AMD R7 370 (out of graphics card that is readily available in the current market) - which is currently available at MSY for 149.

    • you dont need this killer of a card to get you by.

heck even a old 7970 would be fine.

the current consoles are ok if you just want to do gaming now and then.

and not give a dam about how pretty it can look.

but the pc market does have more freedom on what you can do with it.

      and no monthly cost.

i say go with what ever your friends has gotten.

if you need a hand picking parts people will be happy to help.

-side note i think xbone will be getting some keyboard support down the track.-

      • +1

Can confirm 7970 is still a pretty great card especially if you are comparing to consoles.

I will be probably jumping to 1070 pretty soon though.

        • +1

Yeah I just ordered a 1070 to replace my 7970, it had a great run, but it's time to spend up and enjoy a better experience in Forza Horizon 3 and soon Battlefield 1.

        • +1

@Hayness: Man, I really want to grab a VR headset + wheel for some driving sim experience.

    • Console is cheaper. Advantage of this is MUCH better graphics at higher resolution and frames/sec.

    • +1

This card is for people wanting to run their games at 4K res and or really high (100+) FPS.

Your Xbox one and PS4 can barely do 1080p and rarely hit 60fps.

    • You should firstly consider what sort of games you enjoy playing and if they are exclusive to consoles or PC? That's a good starting point.

I'm a console gamer but that's what I've been accustom to most of my life. I like the convenience. I don't need to mess around with configurations/settings/meeting graphic requirements etc. Every game works and I know I can play it with a controller I'm used to. Though I hate paying more for games then PC gamers, tracking down copies of older games can be a nightmare and not able to carry over my "all" my titles to the newer console quite frankly sucks.

I envy how cheap PC gamers pay for games and how they're all almost available digitally at any time regardless of when they were released (with some exceptions). I like how they don't need to buy multiple machines to play them all and how they are playable years down the track - sometimes even still online. Not to mention how stunning the games look compared to their console counterpart. I don't like how some games need major fiddling around before you can actually play them, being forced to use keyboard and mouse for some and how upgrading parts every few years is inevitable.

      • Do you envy terrible mouse acceleration and field of view of some PC console ports?

    • -2

Yes. Although some naughty PC users don't pay for many games they play which can reduce the cost depending.

    • Different people are going to give you different answers. But basically, it's expensive to have the latest and greatest hardware, and this is the latest and among the greatest atm. Consoles go through a generation like every 5-8 years or so, but for a pc it's like 1-2 years and even then the graphical power of the current ps4/xbox was roughly a mid range at the time. If all you wanted is something that is on par with consoles graphical power, you could seriously buy a new GPU that costs you under $150 and get about the same thing you would expect from a console.

  • Great price …but 1070 is much better bang for buck.

    • Agreed. I'm upgrading from a 3gb 7950 to an 8gb Gigabyte G1 1070 for $556 from Futu. Around 200 more than the 1060, and 300 less than the 1080. For what you pay versus the performance it provides at 1440p and 4k, it was the sweet spot for me. And free Gears 4 as the cherry on top!

  • Bought!

Now what screen will compliment this that won't break the bank? saw a 4k one on ozbargain, but only 60hz…

  • So wanted to get this but I get this error when trying to apply the coupon: "We removed any vouchers you already applied. You can try using them on a future purchase."

This is with a brand new ebay account and tried with different browsers. What am I doing wrong?

EDIT: It seems you have to click BUY NOW and checkout that way for it to work.

  • Hmm I think I'm gonna need to SLI these bad boys to play WoW at max settings on my U3415W. That's a lot of $$$ :(

  • anyone received the gear of war 4 coupon code from them yet?

    • never mind, got it figured out
