  • The fact is, you're blood alcohol reading on this device could still be different to the cop's device.

    • Yup. As with all of these types of cheaper devices the manual has a massive wall of text five point disclaimer that says "don't trust this device, we are no liable if you do".

And even if you were to trust the device:

Calibration Recommended every 500 tests or 6 months, whichever comes first. Australian Standards Requirement: 1 month

    this deal blows!

    • +2

      Are you drunk?

    • Blow until I say stop

      • Okay Officer!!

        • Ok Occifer!

        • +1

          YES,OCCIFER.

  • These things are legally useless.

You yourself know how much you've had to drink - if in doubt, you know what to do.

    • Bobbified is correct, we ought to be responsible drinker.

Breathalyser is mainly use as an aid, example if one is on P license, and have a bit of a drink the night before, in the morning before driving, breathalyser can be used to test whether there is still alcohol within the system.

None of the personal brethalysers can be used to argue at Court or with Police.
It merely to help assess BAC.

If you happen to need one of this aiding device, then get a good one at a good price.

      Cheers

The problem here is that you give an example and then immediately say "but you can't actually use it for that purpose, using this device gives you no legal defense and cannot be trusted to tell you whether you're good to drive, even if you're the guy in the example I just used to try and explain how it's useful".

I bought one (Stealth) from Mastershop a year ago. These are great for learning your tolerance for alcohol but this has been a great device for a big night on the town and checking yourself in the morning.

My last 3 calibrations have shown my unit is well within tolerance and extremely accurate.

          @BenMHarvey:

The problem is, the difference between being legally under and being over the limit is so small that you'd still have to give it a pretty big allowance after a "safe" reading to err on the side of caution.

Eg. If you returned a reading of 0.040 or 0.045 on your own device, would you be willing to take that risk and rely on that reading to say you're legally able to drive?

Perhaps if you got a 0.010 reading, you might say that it's fine to drive (if you're limit is 0.050). But that'd be less than half a standard drink and I think most people would know that they're fine to drive after having such a little amount to drink, without having to use a device.

As a restricted driver with a legal BAC of 0.000, would you really trust the device that returned a 0.000 reading the morning after a heavy night? I know I'd be scratching my head wondering whether it's broken or not.

The only real useful thing I see with these devices is the morning after returning from a bucks party to see who gets bragging rights!

          @bobbified:

I think some common sense here is in order if I blow 0.049 I probably will wait and until I'm going down. You'll learn once you own a device like these you often go up quite easily as alcohol enters the bloodstream slowly.

If I haven't had a drink for an hour and I'm 0.049 and after 10 mins I'm 0.048 I'll jump in the car and won't have a fear of an RBT.

The worst calibrations I had was out by 0.002 on a standard test of 0.05. My unit was registering 0.052. Last 2 calibrations have been spot on.

Either way as an owner of one of the stealth devices I will trust it and completely understand it's not going to hold up in court but it's saved me driving many times.

    • Exactly. If you need to check then you're probably over the limit.

  • Is there anyway to get one of those that the copper use?

    • The exact one that the copper use, most likely not, but the one with similar features and specs, probably yes. But very expensivo.

When you are stopped by cop with the tester, and tester give high ready, usually you will be asked to enter the big bus to be tested with a bigger machine.

This is what I mormally see in TV show Highway patrol.

    • Even if you could get the same machine, it wouldn't help your case in court. The cops calibrate their handhelds frequently and they are still only used as indicators. Their "source of truth" is that big fat machine with the huge hose at the police station or in their bus. The reading from that machine is what is relied on in court.

Depending on the distance between where you are "caught" and the police station, they may not bother taking you back to the station if their handheld registers a result that is on or just over the limit. This is because the time that it takes to transport you to the police station may mean that your result measured on their proper machine will less.

(I should add that any unpleasant attitude towards the cops in the above situation may earn you an extremely fast ride to the station!)

  • Can you sweeten the deal at all for purchasing direct? I see it's $99 delivered on eBay.

    • And now you've raised it $10.. Why?

      • It was incorrect pricing on ebay.
        Thanks
