Optus 3G Wifi Pocket (Model Huawei E5251) $10 from Harvey Norman

I think this is a bargain, for just a device.

It is not mentioned on the website whether there is any data included.

Comes with a 2gb data to be used within 14 days - is confirmed.

Sim Exp 1/12/16

OR

For even more budget situation, there is another choice of 'Optus Huawei E3351 3G USB', this is mentioned on website it is included with 2 GB of data to be used in 14 days.

Sim Exp 1/1/17

Plenty of stock in harvey norman near my place, i am curious, if they do not sell them all by exp date, can HN return stock to optus?

Some considerations for this deal:

the good quality micro usb charger inside the box worth $5

plus a good $5 battery

Can anyone can confirm the battery in this deal E3351 can use in huawei E5573?

Network frequency supported by E5251

3G: DC-HSPA+/UMTS 900 MHz, 2100 MHz
2G: GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz

Do yourself a favour. Go 4G.

it does not matter, for a website browsing, even i tested 3G on youtube on 720p - only 2-3 secs loading delay.

But those pocket wifi modem with only limited data, it is not for movie use. Sending, receiving email and internet browsing are not a bad choice for a $10.

      • Yeah this optus you're talking about. 2g would almost suffice in some areas.

  • Saw these this morning at Harvey Norman Mt Barker (SA). The sign said includes data, but I couldn't see anywhere what it was!

Is there any data expiry date on the device? Like must activate before xxx for free data.

      • Not that I could see. I had a quick look at them on my way out trying to see how much data was included with the Pocket Wi-Fi, but I couldn't see that info, or how long the expiry might be.

      • Yes. Bought one today and free data had expired may 2016.

  • Someone said yesterday that this device is "unlocked"

    True?

    Will it work with Aldi?

    • Even if unlocked, will only cover part of 3G with limited band support. When on sale like Coles till yesterday, the Optus Huawei 4G model is unlocked and full band support ( can confirm as have tried and tested myself in semi rural area ). Can still get these for back up/data.

      • OK thanks, the 4G model is the one to get!

I was thinking about, insert the sim into my spare 4G Plus or 4GX device so that get full band coverage?

If this way is working, that $5 USB modem working out only $2.5/GB

        • Spot on! About the cheapest data going for USB/WiFi/3G-4G Tablet Sims for only outlaying a fiver :-)

From experience, most current 3G wifi modems and 3G USB sticks from Optus come with 2GB / 14 day exp included, but always wise to check the sim ( therefore also included data ) expiry date and work out if you can activate/use before that date + 14 days.

For a lot Prepaid wireless internet users both 3G and 4G, these are easily worth the included data alone.

Need a cheap one of these as the battery in mine wont hold charge for long.

Maybe you could vote to say thanks to the Op for helping you out.

      • But I havent got one yet :p

        • I'm not even buying one & still voted.

  • Believe the SIM card will be expired soon.

    • Yep, I have two. One is Dec 1, 2016 the other Jan 1 2017.

May be unlocked too, using with Amaysim now.

      • Sounds this is NOT locked ?

        • Yes unlocked

  • Can we put the recent $4.90 prepaid Kogan Sim in these to use the 12gb data?

    • Yes you can
      Device is unlocked

If anyone is in a rural area, definitely get the E5573 4G model. Not just for the speed, but it has a much better antenna built in.

I had the E5251 and it was fine in town but had terrible service at my rural property to the point where it was unusable. Switched to the E5573 which gets 1-2 bars of 4G and it's such a huge improvement, I can stream HD video now where I could barely check email before. I was going to install a roof antenna but I don't need to now.

  • Is this Optus locked ? Or it can be used with other Operators' sim, for example, Telstra/Vodafone SIM ?

    • Just tried with an Aldimobile sim. No good, so Telstra is out.

      Box says 3G B1 B8, so 2100/900.

      • Last time, I went to Officeworks and bought a HUAWEI 5573, with Optus sim. Proven that this 5573 works for Telstra sim as well. So, I am pretty happy with this HUAWEI 5573 so far.

Just asked on chat: "Up to 2GB of included data^ with 14 days expiry for use within Australia"

  • Hanging out for a E5573 now based on the comments above and the comments in the last E5573 deal.

    • still you can not go wrong with this Huawei 3G modem at that price of $10 with 2GB of data,

even the good quality micro usb charger inside the box worth $5 plus a good $5 battery

      • Simple answer - I don't want shitty 3G when I can get 4G. Neither do I actually want to go with shitty Optus either.

      • I have a HUAWEI 5571 pocket WIFI. Anybody has idea about battery compatibility, between this E5251 and 5571 ?

  • Bought one today. Free data sim had already expired May 2016.

Changed APN to "yesinternet" popped in an Amaysim SIM card for cheap data and works perfectly.
