Seems appropriate to call it a pale ale then

On a scale with, say, Fat Yak at the thinner end and Little Creatures/Hop Thief at the hoppier end, where would you rate it?

      • Would like to know as well. People here dont like Fat Yak I suppose.

        • +32

          People here don't like anything

        • +13

People don't like Fat Yak because it's not a good beer. Matilda Bay put out almost exclusively horrible beers.

        • +1

@Kyuss09: May be ur perception alone. Surprisingly it has quite a lot positive reviews and I like it chilled, so dont care what everyone else thinks.
          Edit: Reviews: https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_325108/fat-yak-orig…

        • +13

          @Kyuss09:
people dont like fat yak cause it's owned by CUB. as far as mass-produced corporate-greed beer goes it's not too bad.

unfortunately with 'craft' beer, you need to decipher whether people hate it because it's actually a rubbish beer, or whether it's just not artisan-crafted in a small batch by some travelling pygmy circus in a vegan friendly environmentally sustainable way.

on a more productive note, i haven't tasted this particular beer so can't comment on it, though it does appear to be an independent brewery based in california, so that may tick the boxes that people are after to convince themselves it's a worthwhile beer ;)

        • +1

@Kyuss09: Fat Yak used to be a nice beer. A good go to when nothing else was on special. It has since however changed in flavour since the packaging change and lacunch of Wild Yak which now tastes more like Fat Yak used to.

        • @jimbler:

          Agree 100%

It's beer, stick it in your mouth and swallow it.

Maybe stick too your watered down tasteless coronas if you can't handle normal beer

        • +1

          @jimbler: People here are teetotalers.

        • @Squidmcsproggen: Coronas aren't tasteless ey. Corono Lite may be, not Corona Extra.

        • @Kyuss09: I am far from being a beer snob but I agree with you here.
Had a Matilda sample pack a while back, pretty much all were awful.

        • @virhlpool: You need more upvotes for this comment. Your sense of humour is outstanding.

Its hoppy like Sierra Nevada (on par or more hoppy than hop thief) but kind of smooth and creamy

        • -7

wow don't categorgise sierra nevada with this garbage.

        • +4

          @scorpweb:

You don't have to drink it if you don't like it but I certainly do rate it compared to many craft beers I have had. Maybe other people have taste buds similar to mine rather than yours.

      • +3

        Fat Yak 25ibu 4.7%
        Hop Theif 40ibu 5%
        Pintale 47ibu 5.3%

I generally prefer darker ales these days but mediocre isn't a word I would use to describe pintale.

      • +1

Do you like beers like Gage Roads Atomic Pale?? It's nicer than that. Assuming it's been treated well. I find a lot of imported, hoppy beers bought from Dans to be terrible

        • Very true on the treatment ie. lack of an unbroken cold chain- these beers have probably undergone several major temperature fluctuations between the US and your local DMs. We've been burnt several times - most recently on a Tuatara (NZ) 6-pack from 1st Choice that was horribly skunked. Also seen pallets of high-end beer parked outside the local DM's loading dock in 40C heat- it's fecked that they can charge $70 and up for this stuff and even sadder that many punters trying it for the first time will just write it off as bad beer.

    • +4

Mediocre? What do you rate as better? These are my favourite craft pale ale atm having over taken Sierra Nevadas Pale Ale

      • +3

If it is in the same league as Sierra Nevada then well worth it. Thanks.

        • I find this better than Sierra. Sierra is more bitter and this one is more fruity.

        • I believe so, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I have been going through Dan Murphy's craft section, settled on Sierra Nevada as my go to beer. Switched over to Adnam's Ghostship for a while (great value), then tried this on a whim (last weekend) and was pleasantly surprised. I like hop heavy beers and also enjoy IPAs and this suited my palette. Worth a go at this price :)

      • +5

Try Pirate Life Pale Ale. Easily one of the best Pales being brewed in Oz atm, and I'd choose it over Sierra Nevada Pale any day.

        • Thanks for the recommendation! I will give it a go.

        • +1

I second and third this. Great beer. Also try Brewdog's Punk IPA (also available at Dan's) and Brew Cult's Hopzone (which is not).

        • +1

Their Imperial IPA is also fantastic. Not cheap, but bloody good.

        • +2

DM's have a few Stone Brewing beers (NOT Stone & Wood) that are also excellent.

Choice Liquor also have the Milwaukee Lakefront Fixed Gear IPA which is also great.

        • The Eye-Eye PA (said with a pirate accent) is REALLY GOOD, if that style of beer floats your boat!

  • TA is this because of an impending Best Before date?

    • +14

beer doesn't last long enough in my house for me to be worried about best before dates

      • having finished off 4 slabs of beer past it's best before date in recent times, i can confirm it's not really a huge issue anyway :D

      • +1

        Username checks out then \m/

  • oh yeah, nice post OP

  • thanks OP

  • +1

    Thanks OP

STOCK UP GUYS, ITS WORTH IT!!!!!! Taste very similar to Beechworth Pale Ale and Stone & Wood Pale ale which cost around $75

    • +3

Stone & Wood don't make any beer that tastes remotely like an American Pale Ale.

      • +1

        S&W Pacific ale does

        • +5

OK, we're going to have to disagree on this. Pacific Ale is thin and light, like a blonde/golden ale, with some Galaxy hops for aroma. Beechworth Pale tastes like a real American Pale Ale, eg. similar to Sierra Nevada Pale, Oskar Blues Dale, or Aussies like Feral Hop Hog, Pirate Life Pale, etc. They don't taste anything alike to me.

        • @dazweeja:

Hrmm…interesting. To me Pacific Ale and Beechworth Pale Ale taste very similar with the fruity flavour. Sierra Nevada has a bitter taste to me, I haven't tried the Feral Hop Hog and Pirate life tho.

        • @HarveySpecter:

Have you tried the Balter XPA? If you like the Pacific Ale and Beechworth Pale Ale, I think you'd like that because it's sort of a good mix of both of those. Also the Panhead Quickchange.

        • @dazweeja: Nah I haven't mate, do they stock it at Dans? Doesn't look like they do.

Edit: Oh god the Panhead cost $118 for 24 :O

Why are Pale Ales with fruity flavour so bloody expensive :(

        • @HarveySpecter:

Sorry mate, didn't know it was that expensive. I've only bought the 4 pack for $18 from the local which seems a bit easier to swallow.

        • @dazweeja: A 4 pack for $18 equates to $108 for 24 :O

        • @HarveySpecter: You pay for what you get..

but is sounds like you know that already.

  • +1

    Bought! Thanks TA!
EDIT: Crap, forgot cashrewards! Don't forget it guys!

  • Can anyone recommend something else to get it over the $50 required for the Amex credit?

    • +4

      Two slabs?

    • +1

Get a slab, a 6-pack and maybe one of those 40c wine pourers. $50.20 in total

    • +2

Buy a gift card with Amex to get the credit, then buy the beer with the gift card.

  • +1

    Just bought 3 cases, YOLO

  • Thanks, bought 1

  • Haha thanks missed the woolies 1

  • Thanks TA bought 2 cases, my woolies order was cancelled yesterday

  • Thanks for the deal OP. Bought a case to enjoy over xmas holidays at this price. Excellent!

  • +3

5.3% alcohol aswell. So better Alcohol % per buck aswell making it better value.

  • I bought this from Dan Murphy's yesterday before the price drop! oh well.

For those who are interested, this is a really tasty beer.
I prefer it to Fat Yak.

  • ordered, thanks

  • Damn! I just bought a 6 pack of this last night from DM @ $20.99!!

    • +1

      OUCH!!!

    • +3

I never get why anyone buys 6 packs? They are such a rip off!

      • +1

        Bad at maths maybe
Or a type of self control
Or something to bring to a party

        • +1

I just wanted to taste it as there were good views on it, but none available for pick up near my locale from the Woolworths deal.

None of this available at any of my local DMs either

      • As peanut money says to bring to a party.
I can't see myself paying 80 plus for a slab of asahi cans.
I also buy beers costing 20+ when Amex do the shop small promotion.

    • How's she cuttin' now?

  • Glad I missed Woolies yestday. Promptly ordered !!.
    Thanks OP \mm

  • +4

ordered one (just because everyone are ordering !!!) so just i dont regret when its out of stock

    thank you

  • Grabbed a case. thanks OP

  • +2

Goatcorn just posted another great IPA deal for Dan's

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/271576

  • Ordered 2 slabs, paid $79.80 via PayPal and get a receipt from Dans for 1 x 6pack @ $14.90. Wtf?

    • Yeh you have to be very careful when checking out. If a store you are collecting from has low stock, they will automatically change it to available quantities, which in your case 1 * 6pack. The way around this is to pick a different collection date and wait for more stock to arrive. Mine doesn't arrive till next Friday 28th

      • How do you pick a different collection date? On the cart page, all I see is this:
"Not available for collection from <store>. Select a different store or Remove from cart."

Edit: Ah found it in Secure checkout. Can select a different collection date up to 6 weeks in future. Unfortunately, that still didn't help with the Belhaven.

      • It's the way to go. They only had a couple of 6 packs left at my Dans. Called them, and was told to delay pickup and new stock would arrive for me at today's price. 2 slabs coming my way in a few days. Awesome

  • Has anyone picked it and confirm the best before date?

    • +1

The stuff I bought yesterday expires in December.

      • Ta

    • 10/2016 for me.

      • Is it printed out on box and if we can refuse picking in case it is about to expire? Dont want to consume whole box in a month.

        • When I price-matched it yesterday, they gave it to me in separate 4*6packs so I can't say mate.

        • Same as Harvey, separate 6 packs with three OCT and one NOV. I'd say the difference between now and 3 months will be unnoticeable if you store them well.

        • @phew: like? cant store them all in a fridge. So will be in garage.

        • +1

@Gaggy: Just a cool dark place, garage should be fine as long is it doesn't get too warm in summer. I actually just opened one and am surprised at how nice it tastes.

    • Stuff I got yesterday had best before March 2017

  • Lots of store I'm checking are showing as "Collection in 7 days" rather than the usual 2 hours.

Hope I am able to grab some if I walk in at my local store. Reviews I've seen compare it to Sierra Nevada and at almost half price it's worth grabbing a couple of slabs with cup day round the corner.

EDIT: If you see "Collection in 7 days" this means they only have 6 packs available to you, or no stock. If you are happy to order online and collect in a couple of days/week then all good.

  • Don't for get to use this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/269932 if you haven't yet!

  • Not complaining about the deal (bought 2 cases) - Why would Dan Murphy's compete with Woolies?

    • It's all one company…

  • Bought one - phone call from Dan Murphs an hour later "i've only got 22 stubbies left, can either refund you the 2 stubbies at $1.60 each back, or you can choose 2 stubbies within reason when you collect".

Pretty easy choice, grab a couple of other stubbies.

    • What's within reason? Beechworth?

      • Probably anything around the individual price of the stubbies I would think, though I might push for Chimay :P

  • Ordered some, hopefully stock will be available :)

  • +2

Says please note best before is 31st of october with a 7 day pick up time does not give much time to drink 2 cases :o

    • +1

Swear it didn't say that when I placed the order…. Oh well, it will be fine for a few more months….

      • +1

Me either they must of changed it so 3 days before out of date pretty shitty

    • wtf? It didn't say that when I ordered and I got 3 slabs. Picking it up on 28th Oct.

But Beer still good for 3 months after expiry right?

      • Its prob all there warehouse stock thats going out of date i think 40 is alot for a beer 3 days out of expiry.

Not aure if its good 3 months out lol

        • The beer will be fine to drink, it might lose a bit of the hop flavour/aroma however.

        • Looks like I have to use 1 slab for Halloween. The other 2 slabs I have to drink after expiry :(

I feel kinda annoyed tho, the 31st expiry wasn't noted when I ordered.

        • @HarveySpecter: Better drink it all, otherwise you might turn into a pumpkin!
