    8 flybuy points = 4 cents

Seems like a marketing gimmick? Unless someone wants the FlyBuys points to convert to Velocity points to use for flights. Otherwise they are ultimately just going to be converted to 4 cents later instead of taking the 4 cents now.

    • +3

Lol, OP should've done the math before posting

    • +1

another question if you still get the normal 1 point for every litre of fuel if you pickup the 8 points offer, if not 4 cents off per litre is better. Remember all the triple points, 10x points ect promotions Coles runs, you will not get the normal points.

Your car only takes 1L of fuel?

  • +6

4c better. why let Coles keep the interest.

  • +1

    Not really a 'bargain' imo.

    • +1

Agreed, not at $1.27 litre ATM

      but listed as a freebie.
      Mod please relocate if necessary.

Currently near me Coles Unleaded $1.21 before discount,Caltex $1.13 B.P $1.14 so choosing and using either of these is a waste of money

    • Today coles express was 121.9 and BP was 114.5 Naturally I chose Velocity points over flybuys points. Im lucky all brands of fuel are easily accesible to me

      • I have noticed that Coles Express fuel stations are stubbornly above 120c/L recently.. Are they really confident that they have enough price-insensitive loyal customers??

        • +2

Coles express have stopped being competitive on fuel pricing for at least 6 months. Someone must be supporting them. Im certainly not. Ill only use them if they are the same as everyone else and only if i have a 4c discount docket.

        • @MelbBargainChaser77: Totally agree

    • Ours was 94.9 2 weeks ago, now as dear as others around (about $1.27)

  • +1

For points collectors (especially with the new Velocity tie-in), 2 FB points = 0.87 VFF, therefore this deal (which may be targeted) nets you 3.48 VFF points per litre. Good deal compared to BP's 2pts/litre, but whether this is a better deal than cents off is all down to how much you value flybuys points.

  • For a tank of 50L, you earn 400 points, which is equivalent to $2 (2000=$10).

For that same tank of 50L, you save 4c x 50L which again is $2.

I guess the question here is, what currency do you want your money in?

    • $ wise 1 FB point is equal to half a cent, so 8 FB points = 4c but if you are collecting VFF points this offer gives you additional option.

    • Thats pretty much it - cash in your pocket now or points in your a/c - but although Velocity points have a nominal value of 1c the real redemption rate most people would get should be higher than that.

    • For the record, my modus operandi is to hit the $50 pre-fill button on the bowser, then redeem my docket so I don't need a tax invoice (<$50)

  • +2

normally that 4c docket takes it to a somewhat regular price without the docket it's overpriced.

cool marketing gimmick but they need to be competitive with their fuel prices more before it's an option

"Can someone do the math* ?"
maths not math in the UK and Australia.

    • There is only one equation to work, not plural ;-)

      • +2

"Maths" is short for "mathematics", not "mathematic".

        • You say tomato, I say tomato, Potato, Potato…. - Hmm, doesn't seem to work when written.

  • +3

    Belongs in the forums

    No saving, no bargain…

  • Personally, I prefer Flybuy points over 4c because some of the 'double value rewards redemption' can be of excellent value.

  • +6

Keep in mind that you will get 1 flybuys point for every 2 dollars spent normally, so in effect you are only gaining 7.5 Flybuys point vs the 4c.

Given that 8 Flybuys points = 4c as per above, I think you maybe worse off with the flybuys redemption.

    • Great point!

  • Agreed with most of you here but thought I would also share my calcs based on $1 per Litre fuel price and a 50L fill (just for the sake of simple numbers) to demonstrate the negligible benefit of the extra FB points with the 8Pts/Litre option:

    (a) If chosen FB Points option

FB standard Pts (based on 0.5 pts per $1 spent) = 25 pts
    FB Bonus (8 Pts per Litre) = 50 * 8 = 400 pts
Total FB pts = 425 pts
    Value = $2.13

    (b) If chosen 4c discount option

FB standard Pts (based on 0.5 pts per $1 spent) = 24 pts (spend $2 less)
    FB Bonus = nil
Total FB pts = 24 pts
    Value = FB pts $0.12 + $2 saved = $2.12

Conclusion = negligible difference/ 1c better off with Points option (per each 50L fill during the Promo period). YMMV

Factors which may steer you to either Option:
    - If you fill up regularly/have bigger fuel tanks *eg. 100L x 10 fills = $0.20 ahead for not taking up the 4c discounts the whole Promo period (still negligible)
    - Points option is better if you are using the right credit cards that can speed up your FB points (as you also get FB points on the otherwise discounted spent) or other FF points system (may still be negligible)
    - If you are short by 400 points from a $10 off your next Coles shopping, taking the Points options may just give you the quick boost needed.
    - If you are paying your fuel in cash and have just enough on you but also needed to pick up some milk as well. Discount option would work.

Probably only the last 2 factors (400 ponts or $2 discount) would be more valued as “goal kicking feeling" for the seasoned OzBargainers, having decided to buy fuel from Coles Express which implied that that they have reaped all the benefits and discounts starting from paying with discounted Coles gift cards, picking up weekly specials, scanning all possible discounts/bonus points dockets, getting fuel vouchers to lastly and most importantly having determined that the fuel price they are paying is competitive.

      You are making the assumption

FB standard Pts (based on 0.5 pts per $1 spent) = 25 pts

That isn't stated in the link. It simply says you get 8 Flybuys points not an extra 8 (or additional 8)

      • Yeah I am assuming if we scan our fb card at Coles express, we still get the standard Coles Express points don't we?

        • +1

          Nothing says you will.

However those who get their fuel reimbursed - eg Company car, would gain by having the discount in points added to their flybuys account, rather than having this taken off the bill, where the company gets the discount from the fuel voucher rather than the individual.

Thats the only real win here with this deal.

        • @RockyRaccoon: It is in their T&Cs though that:

Excludes Fleet Card, Shell Card, Motorcharge and Motorpass purchases

        • @Mcz: Of course, however some people with company cars use Amex Visa and Mcard, for them its a big win

      • +1

The receipt says that the 8 Flybuys points are bonus points, so should be in addition.

        • That's what I thought, you should also get your normal fb points for Coles Express based on the total spend.

        • Of course if that is the case. Prior to your comment, all we had was the OP's link and that didn't state these were bonus.

It would be interesting to find out when someone checks their Flybuys account to see if that is truly the case. Although its no big deal.

        • +1

          @RockyRaccoon:
So far I've only been given the bonus points but looking at my Flybuys history Coles Express standard points take 2 days to process. So will hopefully know by tomorrow.

  • Thought this may be of use to me as I forget to take my docket. But still need docket to get the points.

    • +2

I read that you still need the docket to convert the 4c into 8 fb points.

  • I didn't need to activate this but was asked at the checkout whether I wanted to convert them.

  • 4c

  • It only goes from 21.10 to 31.12.
And considering that the options are mostly the same value it is hardly worth all the calculations and bother.

  • My conclusion is that for the short period of 2+ months and my limited fuel purchases would only add a small amount of FB points to my FB account.
And with such a small amount, there is little to redeem for that value apart from transferring to VelocityRewards. But then I don't travel on Virgin that much either and Virgin Happy Hour or other sales provide a discount.
So in the end for me as I stated above, redeeming 4c at point of purchase is more convenient for tax accounting purposes than actual purchasing purposes.

My guess is Coles are trying to get people to delay redeeming or "park" the 4c, thus helping their bottom line. When the price of fuel is near $1.00 over a sustained period of time, a 4% discount is substantial.
But then again, the CM & WW cartel have a duopoly over fuel prices - and what is the true price anyway ? I figure it's 10c/L overpriced to cover the 4c + costs.

This has been an interesting thread - thanks to all above for your replies.

    • CM - I assume this is shorthand for Coles/myer which doesnt exist anymore. Its just Coles. Myer have nothing to do with Coles retailing of petrol

  • It is 8 BONUS points, not 8 points. You still get the normal 1 pt for $2 as normal.
The equations work out exactly the same.
50L of fuel is 400 points, which is $2.

It is everytime a customer presents a 4c docket and a Flybuys card.

It all comes down to, do you want the instant saving or do you want to save the Flybuys points?
A lot of customers are telling me they save the points then convert to dollars to spend on Christmas presents. Seems like a good idea to me.
