      Are they any good?

No G1W's are on my shit list. They just break. I went through 2 in a year.

      Just don't waste your money.

      • -5

        Thanks.

        • +2

I've had mine for a year and it's mostly been fine. I did break some plastic by twisting it the wrong way but that's on me.
For the price the quality is pretty good.

        • Oh you believe sample size of one now but won't read over past discussions?

    • I'll let you decide, JV.

    • +1

I had 2 of the G1W models, and recently upgraded to the A119 with GPS module. Big improvement (physically and image wise).
I'd never go back to the G1W even tho it's half the price.

One of the G1W batteries died (non capacitor model).

It's cool I can glance at the A119 and see my true GPS speed, which is way more accurate than my 18m old car speedometer, as they always read fast. I set my cruise control to ~116km/h to be doing real 110km/h on the M1.

      • +1

Car manufacturers make the speedometer read high so they can't get sued if they are actually reading low and hence speeding fines. I also read somewhere that it is a government requirement? Apparently QLD is now (since last year?) fining drivers for being 1km/h over the limit.

        • Car manufacturers make the speedometer read high so they can't get sued if they are actually reading low and hence speeding fines. I also read somewhere that it is a government requirement?

It's actually a Useless Nations regulation that we adopted in an Australian standard.

I have two of the G1WH, video quality is actually not bad imo. But then again, I havent tried and compared to other brands. One of mine melted a bit while parked at work last summer… still usable, but the plastic has moved.

  • +1

I have the non GPS version of the A119 and it's fantastic. No issues at all with it solid and reliable. Can't vouch for the G1W as havnrt used it. I would take them out of the car on a hot summers day anyway cos even though they're capacitor they are still plastic.

    • How's the quality at night?

      • Pretty good. A lot brighter than the A118 and a lot more light is let in. Check YouTube for reviews.

  • G1W-CB still using miniUSB not even microUSB so I think it's pretty out-dated design.

    • +2

90% of the market use miniUSB even newer released products citing increased reliability of the cable. Makes broken cables harder to replace etc but I see their point. It doesn't bother me.

  • Does anyone else have a car (ie Mazda CX5 2016) that has USB ports instead of the 12V socket? And if so, does anyone know how one would power one of these dash cams with a USB port? Do I just get a mini USB to USB cable instead of the cable to 12V socket provided?

    • +1

A119 will be fine as the end is a USB cable and it's not fused to the car charger like some dash cameras are.

    • +1

Don't think it will work, you need a supply of 1amp. Mazda USB ports don't supply such a big current. Check your cars manual.
When I plug it into my PC's USB 2.0 port, which is limited to 500ma, the current supply is too low. Device just keeps restarting.

Just connect to to your fuse box, so much tidier as well.

      • Connect it to the fuse box under the bonnet?

        • True about current. I think fuse box is usually on drivers side inside the car remove the panel. Obviously get an auto electrician to do the job.

        • @adrianhughes1998: yeah I just watched a YouTube video on it an it seems a bit complicated as the rear 12v socket / fuse for it is a constant supply one which means I need to install something else to stop the car battery from depleting >< why does Mazda have to make everything difficult?

        • +3

          @Lizard Spock:
Hard wire to the interior fusebox, not the one in the engine bay. Buy a 12v to 5v dc converter module with usb and an adder fuse (check which type of fuse you use, micro, mini or standard).
Connect it to a fuse slot where the system will shut off once you turn off the engine. E.g. wipers. Mazda's manual shows which fuse is connected to each application.
Highly recommend that you use a voltage meter to check that the fuse is not providing any voltage once the engine is off. *there is always one slot that provides power even though the engine is off.

        • @supaderp: that was incredibly useful. Greatly appreciated Supaderp!

        • @Lizard Spock: also have to ensure you get one with selectable voltage otherwise you could deplete your battery by accident.

        • @supaderp: That converter you provided link for supplies 3 amps. Isn't that a bit too much?

        • +1

@The Araldited Wallet: Devices will only draw what they need. It's like the power socket on your wall - it can supply more than 10A/2400W, but your 10W desk lamp doesn't blow up.

I use the one with the integrated right-angle mini USB cable. Makes it a bit neater. I shorten the cables to suit. Just make sure you get the version with the right orientation for your camera.

        • +1

@eug: Thanks eug. As an electronics expert I make a good carpenter.

  • any recommendations for good value dashcams with ability to record while parked (motion sensor thingy?) and heat resistant to QLD sun?

    • One with a capacitor is essential for warm to hot climates. More upmarket ones are suitable for park mode although you can do it with a lot. Will need to get a hardwiring kit and if you don't know how to do it yourself then get a trained auto electrician to do it.

  • +1

    Thanks just purchased a119 cam.

  • Which sd card do we need for A119? Any suggestions?

    • One with the proper flash memory. I tried a SanDisk ultra and it didn't work properly with it. Got a Lexar 633x and it works great. Even 300x Lexar works well

  • I would hold off on the A119 until they start manufacturing the Circular Polarizing Lens and including it with the camera. Saves buying it separately.

    https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/cpl-status.20524/

    • Not a big deal as the exposure changes with the sun aren't that bad. Unless people are picky and are bothered by it then it shouldn't really be a factor.

      • +3

I think most people get the polarising lenses to get rid of reflections on the windscreen. It does make quite a big difference.

        • Each to their own though I've heard that isn't the case. Fair point though.

        • -5

Front windscreens are UV protected. Polarising lenses are useless inside of a car.

        • +1

@adrianhughes1998: A CPL only removes dashboard reflections from the windscreen (both yours and other cars). It serves no other useful purpose on a dashcam. It'll only make a difference if there are bad reflections in the first place.

They also have nothing to do with UV.

        • @eug: ok thanks sorry should have clarified that I meant that most people don't go for CPL. Though they probably would if they knew.

  • The Viofo rep suggests the A119S is really close to release.
    https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/viofo-a119s-changes.21…

    • Not an upgrade but a side grade they have clarified. Cos it's using a Sony sensor the A119S should be better at night time but a bit down in daylight.

  • Damnit! I knew this would happen! .. just bought a A119 from gearbest 24 hours ago.. could have saved $25.16 US grr!

    • +2

Same parent company. Send an email to [email protected] and see if they can refund some or all of the difference. Worth a shot. If not, can cancel the order there and reorder from EB.

      • Thanks. Dropped them an Email :)

  • +2

I have the G1W-CB. I suggest don't buy this if you don't use your car at least once every two days - the capacitor runs out of power after 2 days and resets everything and it's a PITA to set the time again. Otherwise it's a great camera.

  • +1

I've got two of these cams in two different cars . Once the memory card is full (32GB) on each cam, they start exhibiting weird behavior. They first fail to record for 5-10 seconds when it's hit the end of a 3minute clip (files rotate, deleting the oldest one before starting a new recording). Unfortunately my wife was involved in an incident (footage wasn't required thankfully) where she turned right on a green arrow and a car failed to stop coming in the opposite durection. The entire footage was missed which was frustratingg. To fix it, we have to format the card and it's good to go again.

Other than the above, quality it quite good and definitely does the job. Just gotta keep an eye on it and format before it goes full!

    • +3

Which cam? There are two models listed.

    • +4

You may actually have a faulty SD card.

    • My G1WH did a similar thing but it took a few months of being full before it was an issue. Formatting he SD via the dashcam itself fixed it and hasn't been an issue since then.

  • I have had two of these things, and they were both returned. The first left gaps in the recordings for no apparent reason. The second one returned to Everbuying for sending me the battery version insted of the capacitor that I ordered and paid for. They argued, until I sent them a photo of the battery, and then told me to send it back. I got stung for return postage as well.
From my experience, and if you want something reliable from a seller who won't treat you poorly, AVOID deals like this.

    • Hi The Araldited Wallet,

Sorry to hear that, could you pls pm me your order number for checking?

      Thanks,

      Becky

  • decent review for A119

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amjcsoExAQU

been using the GW for over 2 years now, it starts dying. A119 is definity my next upgrade

    • Why did you pay for the return? When they sent the wrong thing?

  • how many hours does a 64gb card record? and is a lexar 300x or 633x best for the A119? Cheers

  • Is buying from Everbuying reliable?

    • hit and miss, items might or might not arrive but they'll refund if ever you didn't receive your item.

    • In my opinion, no.

  • +2

Oh well, ordered two VIOFO A119. Misses is starting to drive the car soon, and well….. shes Asian.

  • Some F&*^er hit my car in a shopping centre car park and left it. Only saw it when i got home. Will this be any good?

    Or any better alternative?

    • +1

If you want something to address that, you'll need to hard wire the camera to the fuse (permanent running). Only other alternative is the Blackvue, but it is expensive, a bit crap IMO and runs on batteries which is discussed above.

Funny enough there are no dash cams that just do what you say.

      • +1

Actually, there are motion activated cams out there. Some more effective than others. Obviously, you have to have it pointing in the direction of the event. Some ppl use front and rear mounted cameras.
Last weekend I was door dinged, and thanks to my Mobius camera was able to get details of the vehicle. After a visit to the police and some fairly persuasive phone calls I managed to get the repair paid for.

I'm sure one of these could be modified for dashcam use.

        https://www.360fly.com/

        • Is yours hard wired in?

        • @zman09: No mate… It has a pretty decent battery (which will remain on standby for a few hours). It is charged via USB power outlet in cig lighter.
Hard wire kits def worthwhile, though extended use (say, a week or more) will affect car battery.
Happy with the mobius but it can't see all around like the 360 would.

FREE SHIPPING ** AT YOUR OWN RISK **

Bought a $120 Android Tablet from EverBuying. 3 weeks later. Tracking shows "delivered". Well I didn't sign for one and certainly have not got it. We were home all day during the day they reckon it was delivered.

Raised dispute with EverBuying, they offered to refund half $60.

Raised dispute with PayPal - record shows "delivered"- you loose. Not covered. No prove of delivery - too bad - you loose, goodbye.

Contacted EverBuying again, to their credit, they refunded $60. I lost $60.

It seems to me this Shipping Agent used by EverBuying is gaming the system and you loose everytime. Tell me you can't just make the record to show delivered instead of paying out a claim.

Fellow OzBargainers BE WARNED. And if you think PayPal will look after you'll be wrong too.

    • +1

Okay not jumping to EverBuying defence here, though there are somethings I would of gone through.

      Steps
      1) Contact the seller, request the tracking number for the item.
      2) Raise a claim with the seller, 3 weeks undelivered. Collect as much information about the Courier.
      3) Raise a un-delivered claim with paypal, copy and past sellers dodgy behaviour for offering half a refund.

If Paypal is determined that there is a delivered notification, ask them to forward you the email concerning the delivered status. If they refuse to forward you the delivered status lodge a reverse transaction on the credit card with your bank (Provide all the correspondence to your bank, emails, phone calls ect..). Your bank will contact paypal on your be-half, and this when the big boys get serious.

Not saying elevate it too that level, but that is the standard processes that I would go through. It's a long drawn out processes for Paypal, and also the seller. Either way I have found that Paypal been on the consumer side more than the sellers.

The seller offering your half the price raises some red flags. As a business you factor into your prices scam's, lost parcel's ect.. its just the cost of doing business.

As a side note, we've had a customer's report they've never received a parcel. Contacted Australia post said it was lost (2 month chase). We refunded the money in a business day, apologised for the lost parcel. Customer got pissed more at Australia post and ended up coming into the shop and buying the item directly.

  • why am i getting $34.29USD and not $32.09USD as above? is there anything i'm missing?

    G1W-CB $48.26 USD
    Discount -$13.97 USD
    Item total $34.29 USD
    Total $34.29 USD

    • Have you used Mobile Discounts - USD$ 0.70 and EB Points saving - USD$2.20 ?

  • Hi Rep, tried to buy 2, but got AUD$247.26 at the end. Can't apply that coupon.

    • It's 1 per account.

      • Thanks for that rep. Bought one, but just curious, unless you are losing money, why wouldn't you allow people to buy more? I've got 2 vehicles and would like to buy 2. Just seems strange to me.

        • +2

I'm guessing it's because only a limited number is available at the low price. That way more people benefit from the sale, which would spread their name farther. If everybody bought 2, the amount of exposure they'd get would be halved. There might also be brodens out there who buy 10 to resell on gumtree, for example. Genuine buyers would miss out.

        • @eug: That make sense. However, I thought those things are a dime a dozen, and you'd want to sell more, don't know why it could be limited supply. Anyhow, got 1. Thanks Eug.

  • Bad camera, cheap components, waste of money. Watch out if need warranty and need to ship abroad for warranty , will be half the cost just in shipping from AU.

  • After buying a discounted $65 SWANN dashcam ($85 ORIGINAL PRICE AT BUNNINGS) I got to know that EBAY is such a blessing for most of the aussies.

Bunnings selling a freaking cheap ass dashcam with years old tech for 65 bucks! That things doesn't even work out of the box. I am going to return that pos tomorrow and buying a 119 from these Chinese angels at everbuying. Fu(k you local bunning store! :@

  • Hey guys,

Gearbest or everbuying? Which one is reliable and quick in terms of postage

    • The A119 I ordered turned up Nov 28th (Monday), bought on the 12th (Saturday), so I guess it was about two weeks not counting weekends. Hopefully everything is going to go well and not having to rely on GB's legendary after-sales service! LOL

      • Very lucky that escaped that part of the buying experience.

      • Mine arrived in only 5 days (standard postage)

        • I even paid extra for tracking and faster shipping! LOL

  • OP has this deal expired or still going on?

  • OP please renew coupon. I was recently in a car wreck and having this dashcam was invaluable. I want to buy a second for the back.

    • which one u after?

      • For the G1W-CB. I bought one already from you guys, want to buy a second cause yes they are good. :)

      • OP I am also after A119. Please renew the coupon. Last time I bought G1W-CB.
