Dell Exclusive EoFY Promotion - Vote, Comment and Win Prizes!

Updated 28 June 2010 11pm — winners are picked from random function, and they are…

cyssero and idolwind!

Thank you all for participation! I do hope that Dell Australia would find the feedback here useful (and get their act together by providing more special offers for OzBargain members :)

Updated 28 June 2010 10pm — thread closing now! Picking two winners "soon".

Updated 26 June 2010 — Looks like Ultrasharp $75 off is the one! Coupon code here. Keep the comments coming to win one of two Dell Mini's!

tl;dr version of the story:

  • Dell Australia would love to get feedback from OzBargain community, and has prepared some exclusive deals. The community will decide what the top deal is, and coupon will be made available 25 June-1 July. At the same time there will be a contest to win some Dell prizes.

Okay. This is the longer version of the story.

OzBargain historically has sent a large number of sales to Dell Australia — whether it's good legitimate deals like recent Dell S2209W LCD monitor for $137.39 or some pretty bad pricing error ones which I won't link here :) Moreover, OzBargain as a community, has always been providing constructive (and sometimes not so constructive) comments to merchants. It's close to the end of financial year, and Dell Australia would love to get some feedback from the OzBargain community — on their computers, peripherals, their offers and their website.

To get you guys start commenting, Dell Australia SMB has provided some exclusive coupon codes for OzBargain community to pick and choose. There are 3 of them, but ONLY ONE will be available next Friday (25 June). Dell wants to know which one interests you, and you get to vote.

The offers are:

But there is more! Thank you everyone for contributing to OzBargain over the last 3.5 years, I am also giving away two Dell Inspiron Mini 10 (cheapest Dell lappy at RRP $449) to the winners of this contest.

Rules to the OzBargain/Dell contest — answer a few questions in the form of comment.

  • What is your current computer and what's your primary use for your computer?
  • What do you look for in your next computer and why? For example "high end Intel Core CPU", "large amount of memory", "dedicated graphics", etc.
  • Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc.

There is no need to write an essay, but please give reasonable and serious reply. Please post your answers at the top level (not replying someone else's answer). I will pick two winners on the coming Monday (28 June).

So here is a little time line on what will be happening

  • Mon 21 June 2010 — poll/contest start
  • Thur 24 June 2010 — poll ends
  • Fri 25 June 2010 — coupon made available to top voted offer
  • Mon 28 June 2010 — I will pick 2 winners from the contest
  • Thur 1 July 2010 — Dell OzBargain exclusive coupon expires

Everything clear? This post will be updated throughout the week for the latest progress.

    Example answer:

    Current computer

An almost-3-year-old Dell Latitude D630 with Core2Duo T7500 and 2GB of memory, running Windows XP Professional. My main use is WORK WORK WORK! Use it at work during the day writing code, and use it at night fixing OzBargain! Even when I am sleeping it is often seen compiling stuff. Yes it had a hard life. Don't think I have a proper game installed on it, and rarely watch DVD on it.

    Future computer

I am looking for another notebook to replace the aging Latitude early next year. What I look for in a business laptop:

    • 14" 16:10 screen + high resolution (at least 1440x900). Don't give me 1366x768 16:9 crap.
    • Light weight - ~2kg that allows me to work anywhere.
    • Good keyboard. I know it's a Dell thread but I am looking for IBM-good keyboards on notebooks.
    • Solid build + reliability. If it is going to be used > 12 hours a day, at least 6 days a week, it better be able to last this condition for 3 years.
    • Optional to NOT pay the Microsoft tax. If I am buying a computer for myself I'll put Ubuntu on it. The included Windows CD would become an over-priced coaster.

    Feedbacks

Well it took lots of to and fro emails with DGM (the go-between of Dell and OzBargain) to get this live. They better keep their promise of exclusive coupons :)

  • An almost-3-year-old Dell Latitude D630 with Core2Duo T7500 and 2GB of memory, running Windows XP Professional.

Better than mine D620 :) Now using to surfing OzB! :D
Won't buy any more DELL…no matter how cheap they are.

Yes its a laundry list of comps, but i am a hardware fanatic i have cut down on laptops recently :), sure there is much worse out there

•What do you look for in your next computer and why? For example “high end Intel Core CPU”, “large amount of memory”, “dedicated graphics”, etc.
Efficient Cooling, easy to service/upgrade, OS Support, Driver Support, Styling, & Power consumption, ROI & UM

•Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc
Driver Support: Traditionally i have not been able to find good driver support for multi operating systems or upgraded operating systems ie drivers for winxp - win7. Having owned a few Dell notebooks it seems hard to find drivers for any operating system other than which the notebook was designed for. If you compare this to the offerings from Toshiba & Lenovo/IBM they have greater support for upgrading your operating system and drivers to enable and utilise the hardware.

Does this qualify as an entry for the Dell mini's ?

    • Does this qualify as an entry for the Dell mini’s?

      Yes these will do :)

  • Current Computer:

Asus G1S, running Windows 7. Main use is internet and work but it is used for gaming on the side (although it is getting close to not being able to cut it with newer games.

    Future Computer:
Something with Power, Being able to have dual graphics is great, allowing both gaming while lower power consumption when not gaming.

An extra little OLED display would be a great addition to the dell lineup. My AUS has one and it is very convenient for checking the time and getting messages about email etc.

High resolution screens are a must now for me, at least 1680x1050 is required

    Comments:
I have dell in the house and I have to say that warranty was great while it lasted. Something I would like to see is a more solid range:perhaps with metal casing in areas, It makes my asus feel much more hefty (only for desktop replacements of course)

    Current computer

2-yr-old, self-assembled desktop with Gigabyte mobo, Core2Duo E8400 overclocked to 3.94GHz, 4GB of memory and GeForce 8800GTS running Windows 7 Ultimate.

    Main uses

80% browsing internet (OzBargain tab constantly open), 10% gaming, 10% work.

    Future computer and why

I am looking to upgrade most of my desktop's internals in approximately 1 year with a new motherboard, mid-high end CPU ($400 range), minimum 8GB memory, 128GB SSD and the best video card I can get for $350. Also considering a secondary 24" monitor. All this extra horsepower is mainly for gaming. The free Dell Mini 10 I will use on the road, on conference trips, holidays, and surfing from my lounge.

    Feedback to Dell

    • Provide better, more frequent, bargains for systems and components (your current monitor and Logitech deals are awesome). The Alienware and XPS line of systems need to get cheaper :P
    • Quality of your products are good but could get better. Less plastic and more metal would be great. The Adamo was a good step in this direction but the price premium was a bit too high IMO.
    • Please use less proprietary parts in your desktops. An example is the non-standard screw points in your cases making it impossible for 3rd party motherboards to be installed in them. I also had issues attempting to mount a 3rd party CPU cooler in my last Dell Inspiron desktop when the existing one failed.
    • I have had good experience with tech support despite calls being outsourced to India. Your staff are well trained and very professional. This is from personal experience of a motherboard issue with an older desktop I had several years ago. A technician was sent in less than 24 hours and the problem rectified with minimal hassle.
    • Your user forums is also a great resource for information.
    • Thanks for this contest and more OzBargain exclusives like this is always welcome :)
    • Core2Duo E8400 overclocked to 3.94GHz… 80% browsing internet (OzBargain tab constantly open)

Does that extra gigahertz actually help you to score more bargains? :)

Thanks for this contest and more OzBargain exclusives like this is always welcome

Hmm. Contest is mine but yeah I am still waiting for the coupons to be emailed to me. According to the contact I have at DGM it's supposed to be in today…

      • Does that extra gigahertz actually help you to score more bargains? :)

:P Probably not, but I'd like to think so :) and thanks for the contest Scotty.

EDIT: Another piece of feedback for Dell. Release your tablet/slate PC ASAP.

        • I'm waiting for the WP7 phone (lightening I think)

  • What is your current computer and what’s your primary use for your computer?

I was using a 5 year old Samsung laptop but I'm currently using the Dell Studio 15 laptop. Intel i5, with Windows 7 Home Premium. I just bought it recently in February and so far so good except for couple times of "Blue Screen Error" which was fixed later on through update. I use it mainly for browsing the internet, I'm new in OzBargain, but since the first day I found OzBargain, I cant stop visiting OzBargain all the time! It has taken a lot of my time actually!

What do you look for in your next computer and why?

I'm not planning to buy a new laptop anytime soon in the future since I've just got new one (although a netbook will be very handy). If I'm replacing my laptop, I'll be looking for the latest specs available at that time such as latest mid-high range intel processor, large memory, graphic card in similar range to ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 at that time, will be looking for a lighter but powerful laptop as with the studio I find it slightly heavy to bring it around. Also, will be looking for full HD screen display as I found my current screen 1080p is very satisfying and wouldn't want to have lesser than that.

For netbook, I'll be looking for 10-11 inch netbooks with the latest processor and features as I'll be expecting for the netbook to last me at least 3 years. I won't consider any smaller than that as I find it very hard and unsatisfying to see what's on the screen.

edit: Is it possible to have a lot more USB ports on a laptop than just 3-4 ports? I'm talking about maybe 6 USB ports on a decent sized laptop (maybe for laptop sized 15 inch or below?), not 17 inch laptops.

Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc.

    1) I agree with Livert about less plastic and have a bit more metal would be nice.

    2) Also, I appreciate if Dell could provide their customers with slightly longer A/C cable? I find Dell cables are always short, which is frustrating because when you're at Uni and you'll struggle to find a place that allows you to sit at a proper place with your Dell laptop. (I know I can buy a longer cable at the shops, but why not Dell provide us with longer cable?

    3) Offers like the current cashback and logitech offer is really great. I got a mouse for myself with that deal. I hope Dell can have a lot more deals like that and more frequent too (perhaps also include the cashback deal for Anywhere Mouse M905 as well)!

    4) Appreciate contests like this and hoping there will be more in the future. :)

  • +1 to 'Dell UltraSharp LCD Monitor — $75 off', nothing a bit of haggling couldn't match elsewhere though :)

    • Current computer

Whoa~ My current computer is the exact same as Livert's! An Intel Core2Duo E8400, 4GB of RAM and an 8800GTS with Windows 7 Ultimate, but I'm not game enough to overclock mine. :)

    • Main uses

Procrastination, gaming, and eventually a bit of uni work.. which I'll get to right after this post i swear!

    • Future computer

A beast of beastly proportions! I can never bring myself to skimp on a particular part.. so "All of the Above", though i might lash out and buy a high-end sound-card if i can afford it.

    • Feedback

      • Expensive! Last year I was in the market for a monitor, and was dead set on getting another Dell since my last had served me so well.. but it was just too much, I waited and waited for a sale, a bargain, an OZbargain even, then the price went up! And i bought a Samsung.

      • Like ZaFrOoNaLdO said, longer cables, or the option for longer cables.

      • I'm always a fan of customization.. the more options I have the better, especially when it comes to buying a Desktop PC.

      • It's good to see the 'Live Chat', and informative specifications. I'll never buy anything when information is withheld, I'll just look it up somewhere else and find out what you're hiding, then buy somewhere else out of spite.

      • http://www.ideastorm.com/ - Excellent! Pretty much sum's it up.

  • Dell UltraSharp LCD Monitor — $75 off - It would apply to a wider range of consumers (those looking for an updated monitor or extra monitor) as opposed to just those looking for a new laptop or workstation (which for $1000 plus would be an expensive purchase)

What is your current computer and what’s your primary use for your computer?

Nearly 3 year old Dell inspiron 9400: Intel Core2 Duo T7200 2.0 GHz with 2gigs RAM running Windows 7 Pro. Purchased it when i was in uni to study, use the internet, play video games (counterstrike and dota) and socialise via msn and fb. I don't use it to study anymore 'cause I've finished, and in my occupation at the moment I don't need to bring home any work so its mostly just to socialise and download movies.

What do you look for in your next computer and why? For example “high end Intel Core CPU”, “large amount of memory”, “dedicated graphics”, etc.

Speed! I like things to load fast without delay and the ability to quickly open many programs at once due to frequent multitasking and my need to constantly keep my computer clean and organised. So fast processor and at least 4gigs of RAM with a very large harddrive to sort the gigabytes of content I download every month. I would consider a very good graphics card so I could have the option of playing any video games that interested me. I would like portability so something lighter than my current laptop (its got a 17inch screen that is a bit too heavy for my liking) with the ability to detatch the monitor from the base of the laptop (if that exist I dont know but picture having a portable light laptop with a small screen in which you move around and use on the move with its ability to detatch its monitor so that you can connect the unit to a bigger monitor already stationed at work or at home. I would love that!)

Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc.

    • 3 acidental warranty covering pretty much everything (I think) as been a saver for my ageing laptop. Not having problems with for over 2 years, I acidently spilt beer on the keyboard. Luckly after calling Dell hotline quoting my service tag, a technicial was at my house with 1 or 2 days to replace the keyboard unit. He was suppose to change the cracked base but didnt have the proper parts for it and told me he would get back to it. I didnt hear back from the technician but I wasn't too fussed about physical damaged just glad my laptop was operationable again.
    • For someone who has had their laptop for nearly 3 years, I am quite pleased and satisfied with its realibility and performance considering all bad stories I heard about failing units that overheated etc. Although quiet expensive in cost wise when i bought it, choosing Dell as a brand did save me a few hundred dollars compared to other brands.
    • My battery in my laptop doesn't last for very long at all and I would consider buying a better one for my model but I recalled calling your company up once a few months after and they told me they didnt have any better batteries for it (which confused me because i remember seeing the option of upgrading my battery when i was in the process of buying the unit.) However because i hardly used it other than at home, the battery was not that important.
    • The included OS disc and service tag id on the base of my laptop made it easy for me to reinstall my drivers when i needed to do a clean format of my computer.
The base of my laptop heats up like crazy. I am not to sure if it is my model but in the summertime my room is like a sauna. But i guess i shouldnt leave it on 24/7 like i normal do. A plus during winter where my room isn't as cold as it should.
    • I'd like to see special deals for existing customers who have purchased systems from you before particularly parts so that one could more affordably "upgrade" their system as opposed to buying a new computer system.
    • I noticed that many times I use my cd-rom drive, and try to inject it doesnt. And i find out that the installed driver or cd rom part from device manager has just disappeared. Don't know why that happens but because I hardly use the CD-Rom drive thanks to USB sticks or because it fixes when simply put the system on stand by then on again, it doesnt bother me that much.
    • For someone who is keen on performance at an affordable price, I dont mind having a basic looking laptop, which under the hood goes like a machine machine. So maybe more options on simple looking units with powerful parts to lessen the cost of the unit.
    • Overall very satisfied with my Dell laptop through a post purchasing point of view. Hopefully my laptop doesnt break down past its 3 year warranty.
  • Current Computer:..

Dell XPS m1330. Purchased as soon as it came out fully spec'ed. Have owned it for over 2 years and used it mainly for studying and part time gaming. It's the best performing laptop I have ever owned, and I have owned many laptops with my first being a Dell CPxH. Only problem with the m1330 was that I had to get the motherboard replaced twice with approximately 8 month intervals due to the Nvidia GPU overheating (known issue). I am out of warranty and the m1330 is now a ticking time bomb. It is time to get a new one…

    Future Computer:..

Studying has somewhat deprived me of time to play games and hence the addiction is no more! Thus there is no need for CPU power or a dedicated graphics card. Rather, I find myself traveling a lot since my studies have ended (thank god). I am now in the market for a light weight laptop/netbook that can play 720p/1080p movies flawlessly for extended periods of time. This means a decent powered CPU/GPU as well as a good resolution screen at approx 10-12" in size and obviously a high capacity battery.

    Feedback:..

Although I do appreciate the 1 year extra warranty on the NVIDIA GPU for the m1330. The problem was never resolved and my m1330 will soon be a heavy paperweight. Like I said, this is the best laptop I have ever owned and I'm sure it would run flawlessly for several years if the NVIDIA GPU problem was to be addressed appropriately. I don't plan on selling this laptop to some poor fool who will only find less than 3 months of use from this laptop. It would be both damaging to Dell's reputation as well as my own if this were to occur. Rather, why doesn't Dell offer some sort of trade in? It's just an idea, not a thought-out concept.

    • I used to have the m1330 for work and totally agree with what you are saying, we even gave 20 or so out for a prize which sort of backfired.
Great unit until it faults though, besides the heat

      • Yeah I was surprised they replaced the motherboard with the same revision the first time (after approx 10months of ownership). Then I was even more shocked the second time around (23mths after purchase) when the technician replaced it with the same faulty revision motherboard! I have taken things into my own hands and have purchased a copper heatsink to delay the inevitable.

Dells are Reliable systems BUT on purchase EVERY DRIVER should be CURRENT to the day the system it is sent out.

The last Dell needed the monitor to be set for LCD clear type plus the Microsoft service packs 100gig to be downloaded on a brand new CUSTOM system,?.

Idea have the Hard drive dock in the front, no removing the side covers and the hard-dive is packaged in the top of the transport box as an accessory the dispatch warehouse only needs to have the hard-drive up-to date with drivers and put the drive in the box through a special flap/slot

.The Customer now has the Latest drivers and only has to plug the Hd in just like all the cables.

    Thanks Dell and OzBargain

I feel Dell should open up flagship stores like Apple. Atleast one per major city. Picture is worth a hundred words, but watching and feeling something live before you buy is worth more than a thousand words. This way one feels confident that you are not getting ripped off, even if you are getting ripped off :)

    • A few kiosks have popped up at a few shopping centres. I don't think Dell have enough fanboys to sustain large-store setups like Apple :)

      • +1

With all the Dell flaming that goes on around here I'd be more worried about spontaneous combustion. The police will report the fire as an unfortunate toaster-related accident.. but we'd all know it was actually the combined rage of Ozbargain'ers brought to life.

4 mth old own build desktop with i5 750, 4GB Ram, 1 GB 5770 Graphics Card and Windows 7 Ultimate.

What’s your primary use for your computer?

Lots of browsing, never enough Study, occasional Movie editing and finally a little bit too much gaming!

    Future computer and why?

This computer will be sticking around for a while! I will upgrade the memory to 8GB and look at crossfire for the graphics in the next 6 months. Th graphics is just for gaming while the extra ram is to run a virtual server for my studies (probably don't need it, just want it). An extra monitor would also not go astray ;)

Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc?

    • We have a Dell2400 and it has been a very solid performer over the years and except for a H/D failure it has been 100% reliable. Not very upgradeable but I assume the newer models do not suffer from this problem?
    • Keep up the great deals that get people like me to get on over and look at the site. I hadn't been to the Dell site in years but the recent monitor sale had me checking out the site for nearly an hour!
    • Love the alienware products but they always seem way overpriced.

Thanks OzBargain and Dell. Gotta love an OzBargain exclusive!

    Future computer and why?

At least Quad or Hex core - more applications are taking advantage of this.
Solid state HDD - for main drive
Graphics card that can be used as GPGPU - to aid other computation tasks such as video encoding, programing compiling (there are some developments but not enough)
Reliable backup system - something similar to RAID, but perhaps with an hour delay to main drive? so when main HDD fails due to virus or other unknown reason , the backup can be swapped.
Tri monitor - more the better, and 16:10 aspect ratio please!
Quiet computing - I can not stand computer fan noises when i am trying to do work. A nice integrated liquid cooling without maintainence would be nice.

Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc?

Past experiences with their monitor service department has been great. Their ultrasharp monitor warranty is top notch. With the high AUD exchange rate I thought the prices could be lower - 24" Ultrasharp monitors are more expensive to then when I bought the 2407 almost 3 years ago.

EDIT: Just checked the U2410 monitor $699 before discounts.. that is a good price if there a 15% off coupon can be found somewhere!

A 5 year old Toshiba Tecra A5 running Windows 7 with 1GB of RAM and a Pentium M (!) 740. Mainly used for internet browsing, study and occasional movie. I don't play games on it because frankly nothing can be installed in the first place.

What do you look for in your next computer and why? For example “high end Intel Core CPU”, “large amount of memory”, “dedicated graphics”, etc.

More power efficient portable units, the main purpose of laptops is to have the ability to use your machine anywhere; the primary factor in that is how long you can go on a battery so I'd like to see that improved. Having more customizable options such as choosing an integrated or dedicated graphics unit would be nice. Also having more 16:10 ratio screens, I don't understand the fanfare of 16:9 screens where people are happy to lose vertical space.

Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc.

Have more laptops matte screens, or at the option of making a choice, glossy screens are impossible to use in work environments or outdoors. Current offers are good, keep up with the discounts

    Future Computer

Unlike most people who have posted earlier, I am a non-techie. I try to make sense of the jargon, but don’t think I succeed too much. My dream computer is one that boots up in less than 10 seconds. If I can start a car or turn on the TV in a couple of seconds, why do I have to work with technology where you can brew a nice cup of coffee by the time it boots up. Also, I want it to be light and with a touch screen (something like a more powerful iPad or Kindle), long battery life and a retractable keyboard.

Should be intuitive to use. By intuitive, I mean that it should recognise my behavioural patterns. If I usually check the Sydney Morning Herald, my e-mails and Facebook, it should have these preloaded, waiting for me when it boots up. It should be able to organise my music collection, tag everything properly and stream videos to my TV without requiring the skills of a computer expert to set it up. And most importantly, it should support multiple methods of inputs – keyboards, voice recognition, handwriting, gestures, and one day, gestures and facial expressions. And this is where I most people just roll their eyes in disbelief – I want it for less than $1000.

    Dell Feedback:

Well, well, well, what do I say about Dell? I’ve had Dell computers that have lasted me 10 years, as well as laptops at work that had to be sent back in the first week. A few ideas to ponder:

    1. Too expensive – When I did my quick and dirty research for a replacement laptop when mine died, Dell was significantly overpriced on the same configurations from HP or ASUS or Acer.
    2. Too many options: I risk the ire of most people on this forum when I say that Dell has too many options. For someone who does not really understand what those options are and whether they really need them, the selection of a system is daunting. Therefore, customers like me prefer to walk into a Dick Smith and choose a pre-configured computer. When I look at a laptop list that reads New Mini 10, Inspiron 11z, Inspiron 13z, New Inspiron 13z, Inspiron M301z, Inspiron 15, Inspiron 15R, Inspiron M501R, Inspiron 17R, Studio 15, Studio 17, Studio XPS 16 Alienware M17x, Alienware M15x, Alienware M11x, Adamo Laptop, it just makes my head spin. I suspect, I would like Dell to go down the track of the mobile phone industry. There is still a lot of choice, but they are all pretty much pre-configured.
    3. Bundling – By bundling in with other products / services, Dell can offer some very attractive propositions. For instance, buy a laptop and get discounted electricity from AGL for a year etc (there are a few of these deals, but they tend to be at the lower end of the spectrum)
    4. Loyalty schemes or a buyback scheme – Eg Get $200 off if you upgrade from your non-Dell computer, and we will port your data over for free.
Some of these suggestions may already be in place, just that I am not aware of them.
    • I'm amazed at how you can memorise all the Dell notebook models :P

    • +2

Ire! Maybe we can compromise on the options, hide them better and only offer customization for 'advanced users' who want to go down that path, like when you install a program.

I did like you're future computer though! After rolling my eyes in disbelief, I had to wonder what that would make the computer do if it really could read facial expressions :p

I'll have to go back and edit my future computer to add the ability to breath fire on command :D

    • Expensive? Not really, you get what you pay for. The highschool I attended some years ago had a permanent onsite tech from Toshiba. Every year 8 to 12 student was required to have a laptop and the highschool was promoting Toshibas. I was helping out the techs during my break and I can tell you what, the locker cabinate was full of laptops for repairs everyday (30 laptops+). Also my friend had ordered a top end Toshiba, only to see it be riddled with problems within months of purchase. Since then I have never thought about purchasing a Toshiba. Then we have Asus, well, Asus are kind of hit and miss. I bought their first tablet PC the R1F which was riddled with problems, and I found myself spending too much time dealing with their unorganised and unresponsive after sales support team. Forking over 3 thousand dollars on that is by far the most expensive ordeal I have gone through. On the other hand, their EEEPCs seem to be alright, with the one I bought for my mum going strong without a hitch. Then we have Dell… which has served me well, despite the hiccup with the m1330 and a shipping issue with my sisters recent xps16 laptop. I've recommended Dell to all my friends and family. Just in my house alone, there are 5 Dell laptops, all purchased within 2years and I have purchased 4 laptops on behalf of friends. None of them have complained or had to claim warranty. It's all about build quality and reputation my friend.

Too many options? Probably, but that's what sets them apart in the market. Variety and customisation, the edge that most laptop manufacturers don't have. However, I can see where you are coming from with the human interaction with store representatives. Perhaps you should go to a Dell kiosk in a shopping mall. I've seen one in Chadstone VIC thus far.

      • There's also a Dell Kiosk in Indooroopilly Shopping Centre in Brisbane.

    • Too many options is indeed an issue. Some models are exactly the same. Targeting different audiences, but with the same guts inside. Just to confuse the consumers I think.

    - Dell Studio 17 Laptop nearly 12 months old. Bought using a Dell coupon found on this site. In fact I found Ozbargain.com.au while searching for Dell Coupons last year (now visit almost daily). I use my computer mostly for fine art graphic work.

    Future Computer
    - I found this poll today searching for a Dell Coupon as I am looking to upgrade before EOFY. I love the Studio 17 and really want to upgrade to the newer model with more memory and faster processing as I am working in Photoshop with files up to 500mb. Then I'll pass this one on to my other half and he'll hand down his to our son.

    Feedback
    - I have only had one occasion to call Dell for assistance. The person at the other end was helpful, it was a slow process and long phone call, but at the end I was told a new power supply would be dispatched and I would receive it in 48hrs. Less than 24hrs later I had the part all covered by warranty.
    - the Dell website is like a lucky dip, depending on which way an area is accessed different discounts will appear.
    - If you are going to buy from Dell you really need to be aware of all the specifications you personally require in a computer system. Purchasing from the site is definitely not intuitive. It works for us as we know what we need, but I have to agree with gsri9 and say that it could be daunting for others.
    - There are a lot of horror stories about Dell, but I can only say that my experience to date has been excellent.

    • I too am looking for a system around $1000 before EOFY. Currently have my eye on the Asus 1101HA. Perfect for what I need it for, unless something nicer comes around. I'll be waiting till the last minute, as Dell has stung me before with the recent barrage of monitor deals.

    • What is your current computer and what’s your primary use for your computer?

    MacBook Pro 15", i use it mainly for work;
    And a DIYed desktop, 2 year old, entertainment, download;

    • What do you look for in your next computer and why? For example “high end Intel Core CPU”, “large amount of memory”, “dedicated graphics”, etc.

Ultra portable computer, most likely a netbook or tablet. Since my laptop and desktop are both working fine, no need for upgrade etc, while those mini-kind of computers i haven't tried yet and very tempted to.

    • Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc.

I might be wrong, but generally the impression of Dell laptops are bulky and clumsy. If more work been put in the design, that might be more attractive for me.

  • Current Computers
-self built Q6600 with various components (running Win7 64bit) – my main use is work (working from home using remote server), personal computer stuff (e.g. emails, browsing, photographs) and entertainment (games, media).

-Dell XPS M1530 laptop about ~18mths ago using an Easter 15% off promotion, main use is for my partner, and similar to above but in a portable environment (e.g. in bed, although it gets damn hot, even with ventilation).

    Future Computer
-I would like a more portable notebook (not netbook), preferably thinkpad X series (e.g. x201s). This is for more portability and better battery life etc. My partner can then use the M1530 exclusively. Why thinkpad? I have a softspot for their build quality and, unlike many, actually like their styling/design. Also, the IBM keyboards and accupoint/trackpoint (as opposed to a touchpad) are a HUGE plus for me.

What I look for: typically a mid-range processor (usually high end series, but not the fastest due to cost increases), lots of RAM/memory, dedicated graphics, reliability, and quietness. Obviously some of these things can’t be had in the portable range (usually the dedicated graphics is the first thing to go). That said, in my experience getting upgrades from the standard features when customising computers (like Dell, or Lenovo, etc.) is usually more expensive than buying the parts and doing it myself. (For example, another 2gb ram may hypothetically be $100 via vendor, but only $50 street price.)

    Feedback
Build quality. The XPS M1530 is good, but not amazing (i.e. not like a macbook pro or, in my opinion, a thinkpad). Furthermore, the standard battery in the XPS M1530 is shocking. After 18mths it hardly holds any charge and all, and I am doubtful of ordering another laptop/notebook from Dell for this very reason.

I’ve personally never used Dell for assistance, but when proceeding with a sale they have been helpful and friendly. I have recommended dell for family members in the past as a good and easy to deal with vendor for getting a cost effective system with decent specs. However, I dislike the excess software (bloatware) that gets installed on them, such as McAfee trial, MS works, and whatever else Dell sees fit (or may get paid to put on there!). It would be nice if you could select not to have these sorts of things installed. Personally, I do a clean install of windows before anything else to clean it up, but (understandably) family members are not confident to do so.

Taking the time to listen to feedback (assuming someone reads all this!) and hopefully taking note of and making changes/improvements based on feedback is great.

You're post made me remember: http://www.ideastorm.com/

Its pretty much dedicated to feedback/suggestions for Dell, and has a 'status' on every suggestion showing what stage it's in - nice little idea :)

      • That's pretty cool, very interesting, thanks! :)

  • Current Computer: i5 750 with 9800GT, 4gb Ram

What do I look for in my next computer? Sufficient processing power + good price. Easy to service + quiet. Usually a generation behind - eg. i5 currently. I can imagine non tech-savvy people having trouble choosing a good fit computer for themselves and often people greatly over-estimate the specs/cost of the computer they need therefore putting off the purchasing of a new pc.

    Comments for dell:
being an experienced system builder - I have never really considered buying a dell PC.

why? I suppose because of the impressions i have of pre-built computers being
    A. more expensive
    B. non-standard. (ie. not as easy to self maintain etc)

perhaps no longer true.. but I suppose the impression remains.. If those impressions for me are changed I'd consider going for a pre-built dell for my next pc and/or recommending one to friends..

Ok just quickly checked.. apart from the 2 issues above having a website entry point for the more tech savvy would also go towards me recommending systems - eg. being able to just click eg E6500 + 9800GT + 4gb ram + hdd size. and give me a price!

Just bought 5 dell LCDs and they are great this in itself has convinced me to look a little closer at dell PCs next time!
    Thanks Dell

    • What is your current computer and what’s your primary use for your computer?

    Workstation:
    Self built, E4300 intel core2duo overclocked to 3GHz, 4GB ram, Asus 9800GT, 1TB + 250GB (from 3 years ago) + 40GB (from 7? years ago) internal HDD, Windows 7 professional 32bit. Display – Dell s2409w + asus 16” in portrait mode.
Used for work + play, mostly MS office and a couple of engineering programs here and there. Always have OzB in the background ready to F5. When I have time, watch movies + game. Get around 8 hours use everyday.

    Laptop:
Fujitsu lifebook c6599 bought in 2002 – Pentium III 850MHz, 256mb ram, 30GB HDD, BROKEN DVD rom + USB port.
Since it doesn’t have wifi (and no usb port to add wifi) I can’t browse OzB on it. I use it as an extra display for documents sometimes. Other times I just use it in bed for some document typing. Too heavy, loud and slow to use as a portable machine to carry around with me.

    • What do you look for in your next computer and why? For example “high end Intel Core CPU”, “large amount of memory”, “dedicated graphics”, etc.

    Future computer:
    Desktop:
Silent computing without speed compromise – this means SSD for OS, silent/minimal/no fans on normal CPUs, more efficient CPU + GPU cooling. Automatic switch from onboard GPU to dedicated GPU to save power and reduce heat + noise.

    Laptop:
Something extremely portable. There’s just so many instances where time can be better spent on productive work, ie. On public transport, at some place waiting for something/someone.

    • Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc.

I’ve positive feedback as I’ve yet to encounter any problems. The only dell branded things I have are monitors so my experience is limited. I like how everything gets free registered shipping. I like the fact that you can customise the laptops and desktops, for novices who don’t know how to build computers they can still customise what goes in to their system. I like how dell’s always the ones to bring something to a low price, For example: dell’s the only one I know of offering cheap 22” IPS monitors, their entry level monitor pricing has always been competitive and most 23”+ monitors are 1080p resolution.

    • I thought i had the oldest laptop on here fufufu.
      Enjoying the new Dell screen?

      • +1

Yeah, I'm surprised it's lasted this long too. But one of the reasons I bought the Fujitsu over another with almost twice the spec for half the price was because the Fujitsu is made in Japan (the price was equivalent to $5500+ AUD at the time). I wouldn't do it again nowadays but back then I had the mentality of "Made in Japan > anything else" so I went for it. It's gone through lots of abuse too - often left running under the blanket because I'd forget (was really hot but never bluescreened or crashed because of it), was always tugged and pulled so the power plug on the back became loose (needed a complete resolder 2 years ago due to rust and wear and tear, fixed purely because of so much nostalgia and love), was used as the main “computer” in the house before I got my current PC 3 years ago (so it was left on most hours of the day).

I'm assuming you mean st2210. I've been busy and have yet to take it out of the box. Actually I should check that it works shouldn't I? haha

    1) Work - 2 year old Dell Latitude D630 Laptop - Core2Duo T7500, 2GB RAM, Windows XP Pro . This was provided by my company. I'm using this primarily for work with the occassional movie and web browsing. I'm thinking of upgrading the OS to Windows 7, but I don't have time at the moment and I'm unsure if all the drivers are available.
    2) Gaming, Movie viewing, downloading, etc - 2 year old desktop bought from IT ESTATE for around $500 total - I saw a bargain here for the ATI PCI-e Radeon 3850 256MB ASUS video card (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/4255), then I included a complete PC system - Dual Core E2200, 2GB RAM, Asus P5GC-MX/1333 mobo, 250 GB SATA-300 Seagate. The PC system did not include a monitor. There was no OS installed so I installed Windows XP. I've seen upgraded the OS to Windows 7.
I am currently using a Dell 2707WFP monitor which I got from this previous bargain -> http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/1051 . The Vostro desktop is still around but it's not my primary computer anymore. I've since changed the hard disk to a 1TB WD10EACS Western Digital (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/9508) and a 1TB ST31000 Seagate (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/16387).

Yes, suffice it to say that most of my computer hardware purchases are based on bargains here in Ozbargain. I can include the myriad of other computer hardware and peripherals I use in conjunction with my desktop PC which I also saw here in Ozbargain but I don't want to make my post a novel :P

Gaming wise, I know that my system is outdated, but I usually play the bargain games from Steam which are usually outdated as well or do not require much video grunt so my system can still run them.

    Future Computer

I'm looking to upgrade or change my desktop by next year. Here are things I'm looking for:
    * CPU upgrade to at least Core i5 (and obviously corresponding mobo upgrade)
    * Memory upgrade to at least 4GB memory
    * At least Radeon HD 5870 if they are affordable at that time otherwise probably settle for Radeon HD 5770 or GeForce GTX 470

Nice to have, but not that important (will depend on the cost):
    * Bluray combo or R/W drive
    * SSD hard disk

I am actually very tempted to buy or build a computer with all the bargains I am seeing right now, particularly the end-of-financial-year sales, but I keep telling myself that I'll get better bargains next year :)

    Feedback to Dell Australia

I have to commend Dell Australia for their prompt warranty service. After my 2707WFP monitor was delivered, I noticed that it began to flicker wildly after a few hours of use. Just one call to their support and they promptly sent a replacement within the week. I didn't have to bring the monitor to their service center. Someone from Dell came and brought the new monitor, I gave him the broken one and that was it.

I wanted to comment on their website though, gsri9 mentioned that there are too many options. I actually want too add more options that are not in the choices which I think would be very beneficial to their customers - the choice of not including a monitor in a system, the choice of Linux OS or no OS at all instead of just Windows, the choice not to include trialware, the choice of OpenOffice instead of the MS works software, the choice of Firefox installed instead of IE.

    • What is your current computer and what’s your primary use for your computer?

Dell Studio 1555. Primary use - internet/email/light gaming. Also some small deelopment projects iam working on.

    • What do you look for in your next computer and why? For example “high end Intel Core CPU”, “large amount of memory”, “dedicated graphics”, etc.

Because iam a programmer, and like to tinker with some home projects, a fast CPU and lots of memory are important to me, but iam usually willing to trade some power for longer battery life.

    • Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc.

Before getting my dell studio, i had always avoided dell, instead opting to build my own machines. I was always told dell machines had bad build quality. But I got a good deal on the laptop, which has now replaced my desktop, and i cant be happier. It looks nice, and feels solid, I also bourght the care plus, which is really good, i acidentily dropped the laptop breaking the screen, after talking to the warrenty guys, i had a repair man out the following buisness day!
The only complaint i have, is that linux as an OS dosent seem to be avaliable in Australia, and the dell dock for windows i find to be very annoying.

  • Current computer

    Is a XPS M1530. Vista, 4gig RAM, T9300 purchased 2years ago.
I got this because I wanted something that I got use for work and play some games if I was travelling.
I have used it mainly as an office machine usually running the range of MS products and have also used it for graphical work I have needed to do using Macromedia Fireworks.
It has served me pretty well with the only major problem being a stick of RAM needing to be replaced just about every year I've had it. Thankfully I had a 2yr warranty and the in home/office service is a winner.

When I was making enquiries about this laptop I was concerned with very poor screen reports I had read about and seen. The rep at Dell assured me that I would get UltraSharp(TM) Widescreen WSXGA+ (1680x1050) TFT Display with TrueLife(TM) with none of the problems I was concerned about. They fulfilled that promise.

    Future computer/s

I am starting to travel with work a bit more often now so I am actually looking at two future machines.
First one I am looking at is something to replace the M1530 and I have actually been eyeing off the Alienware range, M17x.
This machine would be my in office machine that allows me to take it when I travel if I need to. Whilst I am away this laptop is more than powerful enough to satisfy any gaming urges I have while on the road for extended periods of time. I think they have a pretty good reputation for cutting edge laptops.

The second laptop I am looking at is something smaller for shorter trips.
Something with a 10" to a maximum of 13" screen that allows me to run the odd Powerpoint show, check my email and work on some spreadsheets. Probably run Skype on it as well as use it to store and edit any pictures I take while away.
And it has to be small and light with a decent warranty.
With a laptop that size I am not expecting to purchase a mini M17x.

    Feedback

For a novice and maybe even those more technically inclined there seems to be an awful lot of Processor options on the laptops. I find its confusing trying to work out where each one stands in comparison to the other. A chart of some type would be handy.

I really like the Dell warranty options even tho they can be a little expensive. When you do need them its certainly worth it. Options for international warranty would be handy as well for those that travel.

I often compare Dell products with those on offer in the UK and the USA and wish they were a little more consistent across the board with the option available when customising machines.

    • What is your current computer and what’s your primary use for your computer?

Home - PC shop built to my specs 3 years ago (Pentium Dual E2160 @ 1.8GHZ; 150GB HDD; 2GB RAM; Firewire; NVIDIA GeForce 7300 SE/7200 GS; XP Home) to do some video editing, it's fine for that but nowadays it's mainly used for websurfing & games and entering online competitions that I rarely win (hint…hint)

Office - Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T5550 @ 1.83GHz, 2GB RAM, Vista Ultimate (which was a waste of time - Vista Home would have been better & cheaper) 160GB HDD. Upgraded to the 3 yr warranty which was good & bad - good because I've had a couple of little things replaced but bad because I can't convince the boss to get rid of it til it's out of warranty!

    • What do you look for in your next computer and why? For example “high end Intel Core CPU”, “large amount of memory”, “dedicated graphics”, etc.
The newest & highest specs - because I can never afford to get that elusive 'fantastic' computer that I dream of. At least if I got something that was that good, I could know that nothing will ever be good enough to suit my dreams…And with a 2-3 year warranty incase something goes kaput.

    • Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc.
I've had great warranty service from Dell, happy with that. Bought a toshiba not long ago and had SHOCKING support, this puts dell ++
Happy with prices - bought a desktop for a friend and pricematched with other pc's (wanted the cheapest that money could buy) and dell was cheaper than even 'the shop around the corner' after the vouchers that were on ozbargain - and what's more, it got to them in under 1 week which is incredible timewise (and faster than 'the shop around the corner' which is literally around the corner!!!)

  • What is your current computer and what’s your primary use for your computer?

    Something i built.
Intel E8400, 4GB ram and then the usual internals.

Main use is basic activities, email, web and so on.
Also functions as a DVD player if other TV's are in use.

What do you look for in your next computer and why? For example “high end Intel Core CPU”, “large amount of memory”, “dedicated graphics”, etc.

I cant see the money in going super high end as i will never utilise it.
A fast enough CPU and lots of ram and storage is a must.

I currently have dedicated video however dont know if i actually need it.
Ram is cheap now so on board video does not seem like a bad idea as it is one less fan making noise, especially as some low end fans can be ridiculously noisy.

If i was to look at a pre assembled PC it would be whisper quiet.
One reason i like building my own computers is because i can control what goes in them so everything i buy is the quietest possible. Currently the computer i have is almost impossible to hear and can only be heard in complete silence (thanks video card)
I dont think PC manufacturers will start adding massive third party CPU heat sinks as i have done to keep things quiet however if they were to build super quiet PC's i would definitely look for them.

Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc.

The pricing errors are annoying, some do appear to be below cost. Surely a check could be implemented where if a price entered is below or near cost price confirmation would be needed.

Power consumption figures would be good to see for the products

    I’d like to see

Dell UltraSharp LCD Monitor — $75 off

  • What is your current computer and what’s your primary use for your computer?

    1) Home PC: Self-assembled 1.5 years ago…Intel Q9550, 8GB RAM, ATI HD4870, 3TB of storage and counting, Win 7 Ultimate x64
Usage: Gaming machine, running VMs, watching movies, general everyday usage

    2) Home laptop: Toshiba TE2300…Intel Pentium M 1.3Ghz, 1GB RAM, Intel GMA, 120GB HDD, Win XP
Usage: LAN gaming machine. Limited to old games due to Intel GMA graphics. Initially bought for uni work.

    3) Work laptop: Lenovo T61…Intel C2D T7700, 4GB RAM, Intel GMA, 100GB HDD, WinXP (COE)
Usage: Write code, run VMs. Only PC I have at work capable of running VMs.

May seem there's a lot of stuff there but there's only the desktop there for my personal use. The Toshi isn't fast enough anymore for anything other than general web browsing, downloading stuff and gaming with old games, and I don't like to use work equipment for personal stuff.

As for Dell equipment, I use a 17" Dell LCD at work and it performs quite well. Other members of my team have Dell E6300 laptops, which are quite good except they can get quite hot near the front keyboard bezel.

What do you look for in your next computer and why?

As I've already got a recent desktop, I am looking for a notebook to replace the Toshi. A must for the new lappy would be:

    • Quad core
    • 4GB+ RAM
    • Dedicated graphics card (nearer to the top of the range the better as I have had enough of Integrated Graphics)
    • 15"+ 16:10 high-resolution screen (not any HD 16:9 crap!)
    • Solid keyboard and keys with good tactile feel. Lenovo keyboards are nice.
    • Solidly built and reliable (not too much plastic or use strong plastic, not flimsy bendable stuff)
    • Option to remove OS, or to have a clean OS without AV/utilities installed at a resonable price difference
    • Resonable weight ~3kg

I don't mind brand as long as they have a good reputation, good support and are reliable.

If I do get a new Dell Inspiron Mini 10, I can use it during trips with the family, outdoors and around the house. Don't have a smartphone yet, so it would be good to use to look up stuff quickly without using the desktop. I was quite tempted to get one of the Asus eeePCs for my trip overseas but ended up taking my Toshi instead. That was a pain and something I would avoid again!

    Any feedback

    • Better value for money, specially around XPS and Alienware lines.
    • A hardware line with Alienware specs but without the gaming look. I would love to use Alienware laptops for work but the garish gaming design puts me and my colleagues off.
    • Option for full-sized 16:10 screens, rather than 16:9 crap.
    • Higher quality laptop screens. It's about time these improved (not just from Dell but Dell can lead the way)
    • Quicker revamp of product lines with new hardware options.
    • Bring lids with lid locking switches back! The new lock-less lids are a pain to open and often are a source of fright when you accidentally only pick up the lid rather than the whole laptop!
    • Better build quality for products - less plastic.
    • Option to have a non-glossy look - glossy parts are a pain to keep clean from fingerprints.
    • Option to remove OS, or to have a clean OS without AV/utilities installed at a resonable price difference
    • Better driver support.
    • Option to have Tech Support attend at location rather than Walk-in only for lower-priced products. XPS' line's support is very good.
    • Acknowledge issues when they arise with your products. Do not ignore it, at least appear to be active with customers as it's not just existing customers watching but potentially new ones.
    • Prompt notification of any delays with an order. I ordered an XPS 16 as an Xmas present and spent days chasing it up via your call centre in Malaysia. They were quite rude (disconnections, transfer upon transfer to departments, generally have no idea). Finally called the Kiosk in AU where I'd ordered from and they advised me a part was the cause of the delay. Ended up getting it early Jan (ordered at start of Dec). Not the best experience there!

Thank you Dell for listening to our feedback and for this contest.

  • What is your current computer and what’s your primary use for your computer?
Desktop PC - 3 years old (unbranded from a computer shop), dual core 3ghz, 2gb ram, windows 7 pro
primary use is uni work (reports and essays), browsing the internet, occasionally use it to watch a movie.

    Future computer
something small and light so possibly a 10inch netbook. Primary use would be similar to current computer (but more portable), high end cpu not necessary, something basic and not too power consuming so the netbook can last a few hours off one charge(so maybe a 6 cell battery). 1- 2gb memory to open documents, pdf and listen to music at the same time.
So just a light power efficient netbook or laptop that can last a few hours on a charge and can simultaneously run small basic applications.

    Feedback
Haven't personally owned a Dell, but many of my friends have and they recommend it. They're quite happy with their laptops and computers. Service and delivery is good.
The deals posted here are quite good, hoping sometime in the future for another <$150 22inch or bigger screen

A brand new asus n61jq with i7 1.60 Ghz & 4 gigs of memory and win 7 home. Most importantly, it has
an readeon 5730 HD gfx. I first went to ozbargain and whirlpool to determine what laptop best suited my situation, the two communities have been of utmost help to my finding my new baby :) Both communities, ozbargain mostly, has also helped me find a bargain with competitor pricematching at it's best.
I mainly use this laptop as a portable gaming platform as i live half/half between two residences. I basically got the best bang for buck computer with a decent graphics card. I am very happy with my buy and i also considered the dv6-3006 and vostro 3700 i7 17" pack which i missed out on due to my procrastination.

    Dell Feedback

The call center for online dell is sporadic in its quality. When i first called up a day or two after the vostro 3700 EOFY 3 day sale, the first rep was very polite and helpful, saying he could not go down to the 1350 price, but can give me for 1400. I was unsure at the time, so i held off from buying and promising to call back later. To my detriment, i forgot to take down a name or quote, so when i decided to buy the next day, a young woman picked up. Upon asking for the 3700 she just went off like a pre-recorded machine with a heavy accent listing specs which i already knew. I tried explaining to her my situation and recent call in regards to the vostro 3700, however it seemed her understanding of English was not very good. Once my intentions were made clear, she was very rude and full with attitude responded "why should i do this for you". By then i was quite annoyed at the low level of service, most especially her attitude towards a customer, so i promptly thanked her for wasting my time and hung up. Like i said, sporadic, and one of the ultimate reasons why i did not go forward with buying a dell. As to the actual goods themselves, i have never used a dell before. I hope to test my hand on one in the near future if given the chance.

    Future

I am looking for a lightweight netbook for uni use before the semester starts in a month. Basically it has to be:

    • small and light, but nothing below a 9" (my eyes will go blind on those 200 dollar 7"s).
    • Relatively inexpensive (so no alienware or viao T_T).
    • At least 6 hrs of battery life for a day at uni, so none of that 3-cell stuff.
    • Enough power to multitask a little bit so at least a 1.60 ghz.
    • Windows 7 - i really really like the win7 layout on my new asus, so i wouldn't mind it on a future netbook.
    • But most importantly, solid build + reliability. If it is going to be used > 12 hours a day, at least 6 days a week, it better be able to last this condition for 3 years. <—- yes, copied from scotty's example post as he just spoke my mind.
  • Current:
Athlon X2 3800+ with 6600gt. Used for uni work, youtube, oldskool gaming, and of course….Facebook :-)

    Future:
A high end laptop. But not a 17" chunky monster. Probably a 13" or 15" with an i7 quad and dedicated graphics. Im looking to go portable with my work and play some new games. Maybe even a Macbook Pro at this stage as they recently released Steam for Mac.

    Dell Feedback:
Too many options. Should simplify model numbers without putting silly letters on the end.
And maybe the possibility of a fully customisable desktop/laptop system with barebones.
My main piece of advice after dealing with many dells that belong to friends is the amount of CLUTTER software and startup progams that get shipped with the system. It slows down almost every single dell computer ive looked at. Most users that buy Dell complain about why their laptop is slow, and this is the reason. Consider making an option do a basic install of windows for them with maybe MS security essentials as the free AV.
And of course the price. It is relatively low and competitive, but im sure you could go lower ;)

    -thxsmileys

  • Current computer

My current computer is a year and a few months old. It is an i7-920, GTX260, 6gb ram running windows 7 Ultimate. My main use when i purchased it was for gaming, however in the last year it is around %90 uni/general browsing and %10 gaming.

    Future Computer

For my next computer i want to get a nice quiet mid-ranged laptop as i find i need to be more portable these days and i rarely play games and if i do they aren’t very intensive. I don’t see the use of having a massive desktop for me anymore as a mid-ranged laptop suits my needs a lot better. The laptop would be much better as I would be able to take it to uni as well.

    Feed Back for Dell

I have always liked and looked at purchasing a dell, but in the end it has always come down to price for me and dell has always been that little bit more expensive.
If you had a decent priced 22”+ 16:10 monitor I would of definitely purchased one and I know my family/friends would have purchased a couple too. You just can’t seem to find them in that aspect ratio anymore.
I like the discounts that you have every so often but they have always come at a time when I was not buying so have been un able to take advantage of them. Maybe extending them longer or giving warning of possible upcoming deals?

    - Need better Stock control systems - they are a computer company. No one person can sigh off on a price say lower than 10%. To do that needs manager over ride. And system alerts managers if price below cost etc. These are simple but effective ways to use the computer systems to avoid bad errors which cost them
    - Bought 21.5 in monitor recently off ebay. Not sure why they would use ebay rather than their existing relationships with customers. It was a brilliant price. and they did an amazing thing of giving a later model for same price. Some think later model not as good, but I am impressed (built april 2011) and their communication on this was excellent.
    - As a Mac user wont buy their PC's but their peripherals have been excellent. If I was a PC user I would seriously consider them

  • Current computer

IBM R500 Laptop bought on last christmas sale. Windows 7 Pro - 64 bit. 15 inch.
Main use : Multimedia, Convertion of media for WDTV Live, Working from home use via citrix

Toshiba M100 - 3+ years old - XP Pro. 14". LCD gone bad, using via external monitor - It still our main home use computer. Boots faster, countless applications, missus exclusive chat/skype/facebook computer.

    Future computer :

Looking for a small screen (10" to 13") portable computer with good battery for quick email checks, browsing and for travel use (with internal or external 3G). OS should be windows 7 (starter). Sole purpose is restricted to email + browse. I am looking for dell mini with some nice colour then boring black most mini netbooks are sold.

Also need a 14" laptop for work horse to replace my IBM heavy brick. I am more inclined towards the SUV processors for low heat/long battery (A lesson learned from my IBM notebook, i simply dont need too much power). Sexy look is great welcome.

    Feedback:

My current work place got HP desktop. Previous one is all exclusive Dell (D610 notebook and workstations with dual Dell LCD). It changed my perception towards dell as they do make quality products. D610 color was boring and all USBs are so close to each other but very good quality on build components. My Toshiba notebook was good in blue and USBs are spreaded all over which proves very handy even now. My work colleque got a shiny dell mini (white) that impressed our whole work force :-).

So to dell, keep up the innovations with designs. As most systems today are assembled with standard components (like chipsets, OS), so build quality and design innovations are the only differentitor for people to buy.

My dream laptop is like this:
    - Nice color
    - very less LEDs (Please donot give LDE for every component like battery, adaptor, disk, power, bluetooth) - just one for power is enough.
    - great to have magnetic attachment with nice color on power adaptor connector
    - USB ports with enough gaps between them and on each sides
    - Love to have analog control for speaker (liked from my toshiba m100)
    - 13 to 14" screens with high resolution
    - HDMI
    - Remote control for windows 7 media center (Dont think PCMCIA slots are must these days as most are USB based)
    - Light weight, low heat
    - Finger print scanner with bios integaration (I love it)
    - Webcam with logitech quality
    - Multitouch keypad
    - battery life of more then 6 hours
    - Windows 7 pro or home premium
    - Priced not more then 1k

    • What is your current computer and what’s your primary use for your computer?
Home PC (family): DELL Dimension 4300 3.2gHz w/ 4 gb RAM
      Home Laptop (mine): Studio XPS 1340 - C2D P8600 @2.4ghz w/ 4gb RAM & 500gb HDD(Black)
      Home Laptop (wife): Studio XPS 1340 - C2D P8600 @2.4ghz w/ 4gb RAM & 320gb HDD (Red)
      Work Laptop (mine): Sutio 1735 - C2D T9400 @2.53ghz w/ 4gb RAM and 2x 500gb HDDs (Red)

Home PC serves as a server for multimedia and backup files. Home Laptops is for easy convenient access to personal files and emails. We also use it to watch digital broadcast television and play DVD's as we do not have a TV but a Dell UltraSharp 2707WFP 27-inch Wide-Screen Monitor in the lounge room instead. The work laptop is a desktop replacement at the office and it is used to process CAD and GIS data.

    • What do you look for in your next computer and why? For example “high end Intel Core CPU”, “large amount of memory”, “dedicated graphics”, etc.
Ability to Customise and Personalise. Reliability and Good build quality and workmanship.
My next systems would replace my 1340 and 1735. I am currently looking at the Alienware M11x and the M17x respectively. I am a contractor, and I love the WOW factor. But I also need to know that it will work 100% and will not overheat in normal operating environments. Dedicated graphics is a must due to CAD and GIS work. Must have eSata and HDMI for fast external data access and presentation purposes and at least 3 dedicated USB ports for other devices. Would also like to have a laptop that can play music CD's without having to load the Windows OS for convenience and extended battery life. Completely sold on the backlit keyboard with ability to turn it off as well as the multitouch touchpad. Prefer to have fingerprint scanner which is missing on my 1340's.

    • Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc.
      Pros:

      • The ability to personalise the look of my laptops with the cover options.
      • The ability to get anything from a no frills laptop/PC to a full workhorse gaming/work machine.
      • Systems (generally) work straight out of the box.
      • Online purchases are easy and straight forward and customisable.
      • Reward coupons with different memberships.
      • Value for money
      • After sales Service and Support guys are fantastic (Espec the contractors in the field).

    Cons
    * Disappointed in build of the Studio XPS 1340's - Gets too hot while using on my lap. Rubber feet comes off easily. Bottom metal plate warps when the 1340 gets hot.
    * Online shopping gives me a new Customer Code with every purchase even though I "log in" with my email address.
    * Non standard pricing structure. I can understand that the more expensive packages can be cheaper overall, but sometimes I find a cheaper system by building a smaller system up. Another example of the inequality is I may may be upgrading the RAM from 2x1gb to 2x2gb in different packages and the upgrade costs for the ram upgrade differs.
    * Upgrade/Downgrade options need to offer more variety.
    * Back flips on deals and lack of communication / reason afterwards.
    * No opportunity to decline OS or trial version of AV software.
    * Laptops that have combined eSata and USB ports need additional USB ports.

Have to admit I'm a DELL fanboy. I find the DELL pricepoint and build quality / service generally quite good. Back in the day (a good 10yr+) I used IBM, I hated their updates/driver download/support page. I'm sure it's changed now. Acer have always been throwaways for me after a year of abuse. I have had ASUS (and HP) laptops before, when they first came out, and I had nothing but trouble with them as well. Again, I am sure they have changed. Always viewed Toshiba and Sony as too expensive. From my experience DELL has been quite consistent and easy to service and support. I tend to buy and manage Dell machine for where I work and I tend to recommend DELL to family and friends and I have had very little issues. Where there has been hardware faults the service and support, although they may take awhile sometimes, are ok to deal with and on occasion fantastic.

You need cheaper SSD options in your laptops. You need a 17" laptop that isn't too expensive that supports RAID.
Offer higher spec discrete graphics in your laptops - dont restrict great hardware to Alienware…
Keep up the good discount codes…

    • What do you look for in your next computer and why?
Next generation of high end components for gaming, multi-tasking and virtualisation. Next planned desktop:
CPU: Core i7-950, 12GB DDR3, GTX485 (still to come) or ATI 5970, Sata3 SSD etc

    • Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc.
Would be nice if Dell offered some discounts on their Alienware range of laptops.
Current areas Dell could work on improving is their order tracking system and delivery ETA's for purchased items.

<li>What is your current computer and what’s your primary use for your computer?
3 year old Sony Vaio Core 2 Duo T7300 and 2GB of memory, running windows vista home premium. I got this mainly for work and design.</li>

<li>What do you look for in your next computer and why?
Over the past few years, I have found laptops convenient but when it comes to my work I need a bigger screen and thus a Desktop is in my future plans.
Phenom X6 1090T - I need a computer that can handle photo-imaging and 3d application processing. It's the cheapest 6-core available and competes well with intels offerings, and therefore more money can be spent on other things such as maybe using SSD drive for the operating system - Windows 7 home or pro 64 BIT.
    8gb DDR3 Memory
A decent dedicated DX 11 card.
    QUIET PSU.
HDMI, the new sata3 and USB3 offering. Firewire and e-sata for all my external stuff :)
    27" screen (looking at Dell)
It's great that you're offering the AMD cpus as they are quite good for price/performance.
    </li>

<li>My mate loves Dell because of their price and easy to use customisation ordering system. My criticism doesn't come down to build quality but the lack of an HDMI port (mate got his latest Dell laptop about 6-8 Months ago with windows 7). The other negative is the screen. My sony laptop runs rings around it with its viewing angle and colour reproduction and thats 3 years old! My other problem is the placement of the speakers as the one he has, the placement is in the front and though they produce a decent sound they will become muffled once you place the laptop on your lap which can be a bit of a hindrance.
When you buy from manufacturers like ASUS, Toshiba,Sony, you expect driver support and a company with fantastic driver support will always win me over. Being able to find graphic card drivers or drivers to upgrade to windows 7 etc from vista especially when you have specialise keys (multimedia keys) that run through software). An option to have no third party software on there as it can be an annoyance, my sony came with nothing bloating the system (30 day trial anti-virus) except for some proprietary sony media products which are quite usable</li>

Must have upgrade capability for additional memory, hard drive and connectivity.

    • Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc.

I like the options to upgrade or change some components. One of the reasons I got my pc built by a local pc tech was because I did not want a store bought Harvey Norman PC that is totally un-upgradeable and did not have the advanced features I wanted. At the time I did not know that Dell would allow me to customise my pc I thought that it only sold shelf stock. If I had known that Dell would have allowed me to custom build my PC I would have considered buying from them. So keep up the advertising of this feature because I think it is a big selling point along with the replacement warrantys offered.

I think advertising on forums like Ozbargins is good because it allows for user feedback to other members both negative and positive and this gives me more faith in a product x or sale item. Plus I have respect for any company that participates in a place where there is possible negative things listed because, 1) I feel they know their product is good and can stand up to scrutiny and 2) they are happy to listen and improve the product and or service.

    * Reliable/Reputable brand

    Feedback for Dell

*I find the usability of the website difficult - locating product specs is often a long process.
*A search function could be improved - im looking for a 5ms monitor but have to look at the specs of all
monitors because i can't search for this feature.
*What holds me back from getting a Dell is the limited customisation (eg operating system)
+In my experience Future upgradability is poor due to case design that seems to limit you modifying the system
beyond what was purchased from Dell (eg motherboard)
+What i like about Dell is the reliablity and reputability of the company, i believe their customer support
     would satisfy my needs.

The specs are more in line with the Netbooks on offer today. The only hardware issue I ever had was a broken speaker wire quite common for the 700m model.

Have high end desktop (another Dell) at work. The Dell 700m is always in my backpack during travel and parked at my bed side table when at home. Mostly used for web browsing or when working from home.

    • What do you look for in your next computer and why? For example “high end Intel Core CPU”, “large amount of memory”, “dedicated graphics”, etc.

Looking for a light weight (sub 14 inch) replacement for my Dell 700m. Would prefer switchable graphics with decent screen resolution. And did I mention price?

Apple Mac 13inch, Dell 13z (newer model just released) and Asus PL80JT comes close but does not tick all the boxes for me.

    • Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc.

With so many Dell coupons and referrals cash-backs floating around, why cant Dell offer subscriber special deals directly to the consumers. My other suggestion would be to offer Dell credits for every purchase made directly from Dell that can be used for future Dell purchases (sort of loyalty bonus).

  • Current Computer

    Desktop:
    1.5 Year old custom build. Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 (2.66GHz), 4GB ram, Nvidia 9500GT, 2 x 1TB hdds with Windows 7.
The main use of this is procrastination from Uni work (think Ozbargain and flash games), and was bought for Uni work (which usually sits on a second monitor while I procrastinate on the first).
    Laptop:
2 Year old (as of last week) Dell M1330. Was a special (PRODUCT)RED deal at the time. Intel Core2 Duo T9300 (2.5GHz), 4GB ram, 320GB hdd with Windows Vista Ultimate. The main use of this is work at uni, so the size is a real bonus. Used to be used for watching TV and doing Uni Work at the same time (no work was done, it was to make myself feel less guilty about watching TV).

    Future Computer

Next 'big' computer related purchase will be a new monitor for my computer. Really want a 24" 16:10 monitor, but am still kicking myself for not getting one of the $89 22" dells a few weeks back!

Next Computer will be a laptop, as I am thinking I will need to replace my Dell soon for the same reasons discussed by <a href="http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/27406#comment-224096">eva04</a>. While I have had two years without issues, being out of warranty now it is a fear it will go.
The most important thing will be size again in a new computer, small enough to be portable but big enough to use easily. Battery life is also important, don't want to be carrying around a power pack. Also needs to be low cost this time, maybe under $1000 rather than the $2000 the M1330 was. Finally I am studying engineering, so I still want to power to be able to run that software.

    Dell Feedback

    1. Having had the M1330 and hearing issues people have had with that, reliability is a huge issue for me. Possibly having an option of a longer back to base warranty rather than a 1 year next day house call warranty would help with this.
    2. This may just be me, but as a specs orientated type purchaser (liking to think I know what they mean :P), I like to see the product details for what I am buying. I am sure when I got my laptop, there was a product details page for it (with customer review etc also). This seems to have all be summarized into a list now, and think that do have specs (the monitors I am looking at), the product details button is not the most obvious button. I get for the non tech savvy going to the purchase screen is the most important thing, this is just a pet hate of mine of the dell site.
    3. Pricing errors. I know they happen, but they really don't leave a good taste if they happen often and aren't caught in a fast manner.
    4. Special deals for Ozbargain (and Whirlpool) would be great, as it may tempt the tech savvy to buy rather than self build (A nice way of saying normal prices are high for tech savvy users).
    5. Monitors! 16:10 screens at a price closer to that for 16:9 is what I am looking for. For actually work 16:10 screens still seem to make more sense to me, although your pricing does indicate this is not reflected in sales.
    6. Option to have a clean install on a new computer rather than all the extra 'bloat ware' for mum & dad type users.
    7. As fufufu said, free shipping is great!

Despite my feedback sounding slightly negative, I have been happy with Dell, I just find you may gain more from (hopefully constructive) negative comments :).

  • Current computer

    Dell Studio 15.

    Future computer

Something I can game on, probably a laptop if it's not too much more expensive than a desktop.

    Feedbacks

This is my second Dell Laptop, one of the reasons I stuck with Dell is excellent support I had from Dell XPS support for my first laptop. This is something worth keeping in mind especially with off-shore support, it might save money to try and fob your customers off but good support keeps customers returning (and techies recommending brands to non techie friends!).

  • I currently only have a laptop, an ASUS X56V. I use it mainly for socialising and for typing documents/printing (exams!).

The main thing that I look for in a computer is value. Not an absolute cheap piece of rubbish, nor the newest and most expensive, but a nice balance that can complete 'normal' tasks (ie. not newest games on top settings). I can't see myself spending over $2000 on a computer setup. I also do like to have a warranty and preferably my ideal computer is quiet(humming can be terrible!)

As a general idea, do not use high gloss plastic, it looks nice for the first 30 seconds and all goes downhill from there. The current coupon system is a nice incentive for that 'new' piece of equipment. I'd really like to see the website undergo some changes, I'm not particularly a fan of top-bar menus but that may be just me.

  • Current Computer

    2.5 year old custom build. Q6600 (2.4GHz) OCed to 3.2GHz, 4GB ram, Nvidia 8800GT, 2x500GB & 1x250GB HDDs, Windows 7 64-bit, dual monitor with 22" + 19" setup

    • I am an architecture student requiring rendering power for CAD and 3d programs, also use a lot of Photoshop and Illustrator for my personal design business, hence this setup.
    • Love my games, ideally would have workstation card to replace 8800GT for work, but that's expensive too.

    Next Computer

    • One being planned for the year 2011. Will have a powerhouse processor (new sandy bridge chips) and OCed again (can never have too much speed for renderings!), mid range GPU, mobo to have SLI/crossfire capability for potential upgrade.
    • Very big thing for me is upgrading to dual IPS panel monitors… I'm quite sick of having all my prints coming out the wrong color :(

    Dell Feedback

    • Enough options when choosing computers already! I see same models with different configurations, making it quite tedious when trying to find the cost difference between the configuration options (and finding the difference between models). Having a popup list of upgrades (with cost) from a base model would be very helpful. Side by side comparison would also be good, especially between home and business laptops.
    • Dell makes money off selling Windows OEM, but it would be nice saving a few bucks with Linux and using my own home Windows disc that I have already purchased.
    • Every Dell computer ships with a whole load of unnecessary unused programs, forcing me to reformat. Having an option for just a raw Windows install would be great. I would gladly pay a few extra dollars for an option to remove them just to save me the hassle of reformatting.
    • Lastly, choosing deals from a small pool instead of preselected ones would also be nice! Maybe choosing 3 out of 5, just for that added customization aspect for customer satisfaction.
    • Lo and behold, if you take the first letter from each of my points, you will be treated to a special message. Yes, I worked extra hard on this one :)
    • What is your current computer and what’s your primary use for your computer?

Dell Dimension 5150. I'd like to play more recent games if I had a computer that could, unfortunately its just been more web surfing watching and movies these days.

    • What do you look for in your next computer and why? For example “high end Intel Core CPU”, “large amount of memory”, “dedicated graphics”, etc.

Best bang for my buck obviously ;) I'd very much like to get back into some gaming being limited by onboard graphics at the moment. So, most definitely something with dedicated graphics, at least a quad core CPU (no sense in getting anything less these days), at least 2GB of RAM (at least 4GB would be ideal) and at least 1TB of storage since $/GB is so low these days. A SSD would be a bonus for a OS drive, those things are amazing and worth every penny over HDDs. Finally, a decent 1920x1200 monitor. I'll stick to 16:10 resolution thanks, and leave 16:9 for TVs.

    • Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc.

Love the "custom" cases. Very nicely built IMO, however not very upgrade friendly with off the shelf components. Would like to see something unique to differentiate from other OEM PCs, pair a decent GPU with the CPUs. I rarely see pre-built PCs with decent GPUs even when labeled for gaming, a shame really when games are being bottle-necked by the GPU instead of the "fast" CPU that they try to market their rigs with. Anyone with some knowledge of PCs will know that a fast CPU with horrible GPUs will still be horrible with games.

Another thing to note is that the Dell USA seems to offer a lot more "bargains" than the AUS site. Would be great to see something similar!

  • +1

Lots of feedbacks — thank you guys!

I will be close this thread temporarily after Monday 28 July 2010 at 10pm, pick two winners and then publish the winners here at the top of the thread.

    • What is your current computer and what’s your primary use for your computer?
Acer Veriton 3700GX, I use it mainly for surfing the net and doing university assignments when the processor is fast enough to run the programs we use.

    • What do you look for in your next computer and why? For example “high end Intel Core CPU”, “large amount of memory”, “dedicated graphics”, etc.
My next computer will probably be a laptop which will be used for surfing the net and basic word, excel ect this will probably come after i finish university. But i would also be looking at a laptop that could be upgraded and tweaked in different ways as i like to fiddle around with electronics.

    • Any feedback you would like to give to Dell Australia over their systems, current offers, etc.
I enjoy dells systems especially how they let you customise them to your liking, with that being custom cases/laptop covers, more ram, more hard drive space or a larger screen. They offer a competitive prices and you will generally be getting a better machine then you could buy at the local shops for a cheaper price.
I always like seeing new deals from dell and most of the time are tempted to buy the product even if i don't really need it, but at the price they have them its hard to say no.

Overall im happy with dell and will be looking at them at the end of the year to buy a laptop/netbook, hopefully they will have an exclusive deal with ozbargain around that time :)

btw great offer thanks Scotty and Dell for the great opportunity and prizes
One thing that would make dell a lot more better would be having the option not to buy the O/S or other software such as Virus protection. As sometimes you already have this software or prefer to use other software such as Linux.

  • Current Computer: intel(r) pentium 4 2ghz with 768 ram, nvidia GeForce3 ti 200 graphics card.
Primary use: surfing the net and doing school work

Future computer: haven't looked into a new computer as i current don't need one as I am entering yr 12 in a term and a new computer would distract me(As my current one can't play many games, a new one would probably be able to play more. However I am looking for a cheap netbook for school or in the future when I go to university.

Feedback: I like how easy it is to customize computers/laptops on your site. Other than that I haven't had much experience with Dell, as I'm not looking for a new computer, the only time I really did research was for a friend whom did go for a Dell laptop.

  • my current computer is an acer netbook which i have commented on here before how i felt it was a truly great price and did the basic things i need (email, web, light media playback, itunes sync for phone and ipod etc).

when looking for my next pc it will be a case of looking for the fastest cpu, most ram, largest hdd and longest battery life i can afford in a package.

I have a huge love of dell, coming from a corporate IT support environment in a past life. always put dell ahead of the rest. at the moment, the $300 i could kneejerk into a purchase for a netbook left me very limited for choice and Dell didnt have anything i could afford. If they wanted to drop the price on the alienware kit… that may change my financial priorities a tad :)

  • Thread closing now and I will pick two winners from all that have submitted their feedback.

  • Winners for our EoFY Dell competitions are (randomly picked by a simple script)…

    Congratulations!!

These prizes are actually not provided by Dell, but by OzBargain as this site has been an affiliate of Dell for a few months (see this thread here). It's just a way to give back to the community I guess, as OzBargain does make some affiliation commission when a non-logged in user makes purchase at Dell.com.

I will be sending out emails to the winners and please contact me with your delivery address and contact phone number (to fill Dell's order form) ASAP :)

  • well done cyssero and idolwind!

  • Congratulations idolwind & cyssero =)

  • Gratz cyssero and idolwind

  • Congrats Cyssero and Idolwind. If you want to sell this netbook for any reason, post it quick :-)

  • Congratulations Idolwind and Cyssero; and thanks to Scotty for running the comp. :)

  • Hi everyone!

Would just like to say a (belated) many thanks to the OB community & Scotty for winning this awesome prize. I've been flat out recently and hadn't didn't even get a chance to open the unit until just last week but it's a beauty of a netbook and will definitely get a lot of use. I have my unit in black and it looks stunning. I haven't (and probably won't), but you can turn it into Hackintosh quite easily. I think W7 Starter will do just fine on it :)

    Cheers!

    Cyssero
