Looks like a great deal at the price, but might want to mention that ROSE PINK is the only colour that is available.

That'll probably rule out most guys who are interested in buying it for themselves.

    • +12

      what's wrong with rose pink?

      • +8

Nothing is wrong with rose pink. I personally prefer their darker colours, as I expect a lot guys would.

Would a less than ideal colour make me skip a good bargain? Probably not.

        • +4

          triggered

        • Could always get a skin

    • +14

That'll probably rule out most guys who are interested in buying it for themselves.

If the colour is offensive or you have concerns about your sexuality you could always put a skin over the exterior.

      • +3

I guess you're right - nothing stopping anyone from getting rose pink.

      • +8

Maybe a cream coloured fore skin would look nice over the rose pink exterior.

        • I think maybe black coloured and circumcised would be preferred by the females…

      • +1

Not wanting pink electronics makes you secretly gay?

For the sake of argument, let's say I've been deluding myself all these years and I'm actually gay - I still wouldn't want a pink laptop… (Turning back your bizarre outrage to you, are you therefore saying gay men like feminine things?)

I also don't find pink "offensive". You may have no style preferences, but most normal people do…

    • male feminists dig rose pink

      • you're the pig

        NO you're the pig

        • +1

    • Buy it from Costco, they have smokey grey. Read my comment below

This is $20 more than I paid for a surface 3 with type cover, atom processor and student discount. Bloody Microsoft.

    • +22

Completely different product. If you purchased a Surface and find yourself wanting this you did something wrong.

    • Well you could have done a lot worse had you gone Fruity :)
Also different class of machines.. your's is a 2 in 1, this is an ultrabook laptop with no touch screen

    • nah this machine wouldn't have suited my purposes. Honestly the surface's touch screen is wasted on me, I just wanted the lightest laptop possible. Surface 3 price is still ridiculous compared to other touchscreen 2 in 1s though given the specs.

      • Why did you buy it then?

        • +1

          Extreme portability basically. It's 885g.

        • @rbc3585: wouldn'ta device like the hp pavillion X2 suffice? It's definitely cheaper. Has a proper keyboard too.

And I don't see how 400g makes a difference in portability.

        • @Wonderfool:

And I don't see how 400g makes a difference in portability.

It does when one option is 800 grams.
It doesn't when one option is 4000 grams.

  • Is this just a refresh upgrade over the UX305UA?

  • Anyone know if windows 7 can be installed on this?

Damn, I would be all over this if it were eligible for TRS!

    • +5

      TRS takes off the GST.
… This already has the GST taken off.

You basically have the TRS, without having to do anything!

  • +2

Under $1000 means you also avoid the GST on it.

    • +1

Can someone explain this in plain English to me? I'm quite slow when it comes to tax related benefits such as TRS/GST.

If we just simply dealt in cash:

Basically I will have to pay $965 Aud Cash to have one?

Or is it $868 (took off 10%) cash?

      • The former

      • +5

Basically I will have to pay $965 Aud Cash to have one?

You will pay US $748.01 through credit card or debit card, which is approximately equivalent to $965 AUD in value.
This item is from an American store that sells internationally so it will take some time (around a week) for the courier to get to you.
There is no GST applicable to this item as the item value is below the $1000 AUD threshold, therefore you cannot claim Tourist Refund Scheme, because there was none applied or collected from it.

Also when you do GST refunds through TRS, you save around 9%, not 10%.
When you purchase an item, for example, something for $1100 in Australia, $100 is GST that goes to the Government, $1000 goes to the retailer.
You can claim that $100 back when you leave the country if you bought it from an Australian retailer that has paid GST.
Please see the following link for more details: https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Tour/Are-you-a-traveller

      • +1

you do not have to pay the extra 10% GST on imported items below $1000 in value.

TRS is the tax refund you can get on items you have purchased in Australia, when leaving the country within 60 days after the purchase. Details here:
        https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Tour/Are-you-a-traveller

        • Does this include grey imports? Like a product that has its package opened?

I just got a mi notebook air with a relative whose coming next week. It will suck if i have to pay an extra $100.

        • @Wonderfool:

Does this include grey imports? Like a product that has its package opened?

I'm confused, are they bringing it into the country in a new package or is it getting mailed?
Are you trying to take it in or out of Australia?

        • @cwongtech:

Into Australia. Inside a new package.

        • +1

          @Wonderfool:

If the item is under $900 value, then it's fine.
If the item is over $900 value, then customs has a right to charge tax and duty on everything on you, not just the goods that have caused it to break the threshold.

          See here: https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Duty-Free-concessions
          General goods

If you are aged 18 years or over, you can bring up to A$900 worth of general goods into Australia duty-free.
If you are under 18 years of age there is a A$450 limit.
General goods include gifts, souvenirs, cameras, electronic equipment, leather goods, perfume concentrates, jewellery, watches and sporting equipment.

          Also:

Personal goods are free from duty and tax if they are:
owned and used by you overseas for 12 months or more

Best to not bring it in with the packaging if possible, get a case for it and handcarry it into Australia - that will give your relative the best chance to make it look like a personal item (as if it's her own, and she "used" it on the plane), so the customs officer does not ask you about its value.

        • @cwongtech: see, he kind of have his own device which he must bring. So, yeah.

        • @Wonderfool:

see, he kind of have his own device which he must bring. So, yeah.

It's your device. If it looks like new packaging, be sure to say it was under $900 AUD if asked.
He will be asked to pay GST if they do not believe him.

Something to consider when buying Asus Zenbooks: https://twitter.com/AlaynaMCole/status/795881238250672132

  • +1

If only that USB C was thunderbolt!

    • Yep, I've had a Zenbook UX31A for years and been looking to upgrade for a while but no Thunderbolt 3 kills it for me. It will be a Dell XPS, HP Spectre x360 or Razer Blade Stealth this time around.

From what I'm seeing Thunderbolt 3 is a must for the future especially for Ultrabooks. Full speed docking stations, external GTX 1080 anyone?

      • I never understood the appeal of that. For the price of a docking station, you can build half a tower. So why not just get a weaker speced laptop, and build a tower instead? It's not like you can carry the docking station with you.

        • +1

So why not just get a weaker speced laptop, and build a tower instead? It's not like you can carry the docking station with you.

Because now you have a weak laptop + have to pay for the following to complete the set:
          - Peripherals (you can cheap out here)
          - Monitor ($200 for 1080p 24", more if you're going to use a GTX1080, 2k or 4k screen?)
          - Tower case ($100)
          - Motherboard ($100)
          - RAM ($100)
          - PSU (I guess the GPU docking station was going to have one anyway)
          - SSD for OS (250gb to 1TB, $100 to $300)
          - HDD for storage ($150)
          - SPACE for the setup. Some people are limited by space.

A desktop class GPU is like 10-20x faster than the mobile GPU counterpart (before the 10xx series anyway).

        • @cwongtech: but the options for gpu enclosure currently is hella expensive. It adds to the price.

That being said, I've been told that t420/30 with ssd can be bought for $600 with thunderbolt support, so that might be a much better option if that is true.

        • +1

@Wonderfool: "but the options for gpu enclosure currently is hella expensive. It adds to the price"

Agreed - although you can grab some for around $300 if you're not going for a Razer Core.

          BUT

Just how long do you think these GPU docking stations will be "hella expensive"? I see them being less than $200 within a year.

          PLUS

I wasn't only concentrating on GPU. A universal docking station with a single thunderbolt 3 connector plugged in the wall can CHARGE your laptop

          http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/thunderbolt-3-device-cable-can-…

And you can have ethernet, HDMI, USB3 ports, DP, you name it all running at their full speed off a single cable. Want more, daisy chain more thunderbolt devices high speed desktop raid drives are no problem.

I saw the capabilities of Thunderbolt 2 at an Intel symposium years ago and I think with v3 using the USB Type C connector it is ready.

I really DO think it will become the main connector to rule them all due to the ridiculous bandwidth (enough to run GPU externally should give you a clue)

  • the processor is pretty average. I'd honestly go for the lenovo deal that TA posted with 2gb GPU and 16gb ram. It's also a dual core entry level but faster than this, and larger screen.
I'm assuming this looks nicer and is obviously lighter but meh.
about same price after cashrewards I think.
Way more bang for your buck.

    Any experts got an opinion?

    • +5

In this day and age laptops - this is what you are paying for:

1.) Size - the smaller with full hd/4k scree- more expensive.
2.) Performance - i7 dual core 6th gen, 7th gen, i7 HQ (actual 4 core i7), ram, SSD vs no SSD, dedicated GPU.
      3.) Overall build - weight/battery life/bezel size, keyboard/body quality.

Basically if you pick all 3 - you'll have a pretty expensive laptop such as the Dell XPS 15/13…$2.5k+

If you are willing to compromise on one of the 3 - ( as an example give up size for performances ) - then you can save a fair bit of money.

So really it is up to you to figure out which of the 3 qualities is most important to you and then buy.

To me personally, this is a good balance of all 3 of those factors I stated above - so I think this is a great deal.

For some - they might want the graphics performance, so then they lose out on weight/portability etc…

Basically, pick from all 3 vs cost and decide where you need to compromise.

    • Your comparing a portable Ultrabook with conventional laptop?

If you compare whats achievable in a desktop for little money vrs that laptop you mentioned, maybe just get the desktop for you portable computing needs

    • +2

That E series is so ugly and heavy

      • -1

Ugly+heavy=better specs by a wide margin I believe.

        • +1

Yes exactly. It depends on which side you are after. For me I'd rather build up a desktop PC for even higher specs and lower price.

  • +4

I have a ux303 and the hinge broke in just over a year. Not sure if the build is the same with the newer ones though.

    • Older models were significantly complained about due to the hinge problems. Apparently this problem has been relieved with the newer models such as this (I heard there is still wobble).

    • I have the ux303 and the hinge has just broken for the second time and this time just out of the 2 year warranty

      • I have the UX303LB which is supposed to have the fixed hinge design.
It broke and got it replaced under warranty within a year and so far it's alright.
Also bought 2 years extended international warranty for peace of mind ($149).

  • +3

I have this laptop, I just want to let everyone know that there is a design flaw with its hinge, its made out of plastic, its easy to break from everyday use. I have had it repaired 2x in 12 months and friends also report the same issues.

I don't know what B&H warranty is like or if asus aus can repair this within warranty but the issues is real.

Other wise it is a great laptop and great value the battery life is only 5-6 hours of real use.

  • +2

Never getting an asus again. About 5 friends have one, all have broken in some way. Shocking durability

    • I also had a similar issue with a Zenbook a few years ago, power button stopped working (which was part of the keyboard). Also the keyboard in general was kind of crappy. Keys would get stuck and not release all the time after they were pressed, they may have fixed this on the newer versions though.

  • -2

Probably worth noting that it is an extra $30USD for Office 365.

(Office 365 gives you access to the usually Office applications, but also 1TB of OneDrive storage too)

    • +1

not really, cos it will hit $1000 AUD import tax limit

  • Had two Asus laptops before including a previous gen UX31, they tend to overheat very bad.

    • I've had to take apart plenty of Asus notebooks to re-paste the chips (after which they are 100% again) but never a Zenbook.

  • For those that are unaware, Zenbook 3 is due to hit shelves soon if it has not done so already.
Features a more compact form factor and Koby.
If you enjoy the compact portable nature of a Zenbook, consider the Zen 3 before pulling the trigger on this unit.

  • +1

Aussie dollars taken a hiding today. According to google this is more around $978.57 now and I doubt if mastercard/visa offer this rate. Given that its exceptionally close to the AUD $1000 value it may also be assessed for import duties depending on the rate listed on the invoice and taken for the day.

    • Seems like USD will take a much bigger hiding if Trump gets in.

Anyways thanks for the info, will edit it in.

  • I've had the Asus UX32VD for 4 years now and still running great. Upgraded RAM + SSD and perfect. Has dedicated graphic card that helps to run few games.

    • I thought the RAM was soldered onto the motherboard for the Zenbook series?

      • If I remwmber correctly on my model the eSSD and RAM are soldered and there is an extra RAM slot that was empty.
Or the RAM was in that slot and I swapped it

        • I also have the UX32VD and I love it! I did a lot of research prior to purchase and specifically chose this model as it was upgradable. I put a 512GB SSD and additional 8GB of ram so I have 10GB of ram in total.

The only issues I have are my touchpad gesturing rarely ever works, and my screen has some defects inline with the pattern of the keyboard. I think it may have got crushed at some point during travels.

Battery life is realistically 2 hours max now, but started at about 3 hours.

        • +1

  • Should note that the UX310 series Ultrabooks have a TN panel and not IPS, so the viewing angles are pretty bad

Wouldn't be a bad idea to take a look at the display models at JB before buying

  • no touch

  • Should wait for the US dollar to drop after Trump wins.

    • That's already priced in unfortunately

  • +1

How is this item compared to another Asus mentioned here ??

    • +2

Specs are pretty much identical, but I was deciding between the two as well and IMO the benefits of each are:

UX310UA: Cheaper, upgradeable RAM (can install a stick in addition to the soldered on RAM) and can install a 2.5 hard drive in addition to the M2 SSD
UX330UA: Thinner and better build quality, larger battery, much better IPS screen (310UA has TN panel)

I was leaning towards this UX310UA due to the price but ended up going with the UX330UA for the screen

If you want to buy this laptop from Australia and do not like buying online here is my advice:

    • I bought this laptop(UX303L) from Costco 11 months ago for $1200Aud with 8gb ram and 256gb hdd. They have yearly membership of $60 per year which is worth it for the laptop alone.
    • It has the bonus Nvidia Geforce 940m which is worth every cent if you are into medium gaming, graphics and editing.
    • This is the best laptop I had so far and better than Macbook pro for people looking for Apple alternative.
    • I tried getting a laptop with similar specs from shops but it is minimum 1500 up to 2000, just call Costco and ask them if they have this model or any zenbook model
    • Also, rose pink is horrible colour don't get it, when I got mine Costco only had smoke grey colour and it's a fabulous colour.

In terms of colour, graphics and supporting local business, this is the best option.

Goddamn. I bought mine from DSE before they collapsed @$1300 and I thought that was a good deal.
Be aware of the hinge issue (even the "corrected hinge design" which ours is supposed to have didn't fix it), if you can, buy extended warranty now through the Asus website unless Costco offers it already.

You can easily upgrade the SSD and RAM (lose dual channel, but you can swap the unsoldered 4GB out for 8GB, total of 12GB incl the 4GB soldered on) as well if you need more storage

      • Costco gives 1 year warranty (not sure if it was 2 years, you can check with them).
