This post contains affiliate links. OzBargain might earn commissions when you click through and make purchases. Please see this page for more information.

Same USB memory that has been on Ozbargain many times, but at a lower price.

Here's a few previous posts for details:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/255116
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/274730

Note that this is the cool-running Samsung drive, not the hot Sandisk one.

Here's how I got the price:
Amazon standard price currently says US$27.95
Click on "add to cart" and "proceed to checkout".
When you have logged in and are selecting the delivery location, go to "search for an Amazon Pickup location near you" and choose one of the parcelpoint delivery locations near you. This saves US$1 over delivery to an Australian street address.
When you get to "Your credit and debit cards", make sure it says "My card is in U.S. Dollar (USD)", and use a credit card that doesn't charge for overseas transactions, like the 28 Degrees credit card.

If you are lucky, you may also be offered a "$5 promotional credit". I was, I don't know why, I've seen it a few times on my orders. My order came to US$27.04 with the promotional credit, hopefully you will also be offered the promotional credit.

For delivery dates, Amazon says "Thursday, November 24 - Thursday, December 1".

Nope, nothing. Plus I'd prefer to buy from a local, rather than retail giant for a few dollars and a week or two extra in shipping #lazyozbargainer

did't work for me. I didnt purchase since Dec 15.

    • Bang goes my theory as to why I was offered the credit. My last purchase was from Amazon UK, a few weeks ago, but my last Amazon US purchase was in August.

  • "Without the credit, the price is US$32.04 (~AU$42)"
How do you get that? I get $45

edit: Oh the delivery thing, but still $43.50

    • Are you letting Amazon do the money conversion? They charge a higher rate than buying in USD, using a credit card that doesn't charge for overseas purchases, like the 28 Degrees credit card.

On the checkout page, do you see the price offered in USD? If not, change your payment option to "my credit card is in USD".

      • Ah, right. But aren't there other card fees which chew up the difference?

        • Not with 28 degrees card. That's the best reason for owning one, so you can purchase in foreign currencies with no penalty.

Every time I do a purchase, I use Google to estimate the AUD price, e.g.
          https://www.google.com.au/search?q=32.04+usd+in+aud
And then I forward the order to myself, with the Google estimated price so I'll remember to check when my credit card statement arrives. Usually it's very close, for a $40 purchase I'll be surprised if the difference is more than 50 cents.

Example: in July, I bought some flashlights from DX.com for US$23.16. On the day of the order, Google said "23.16 US Dollar equals 30.89 Australian Dollar" (copied from my email to myself). On my 28 Degrees credit card statement, I was charged AU$31.08, nineteen cents more than the Google estimate.

Usually the charge will be a little higher than the google estimate, as your CC will probably be charged tomorrow, when the conversion rate has changed slightly. On rare occasions have I been charged a few cents less than the Google estimate.

There are a few other credit cards that have a good conversion rate and no fee for overseas purchase. I think the Bankwest Platinum CC is another one.

  • Anybody else being offered the promotional credit? If not, I'll change the prices in the title.

It gives me a $5.04 discount and shows a price of $27.95 + $5.09 shipping.

Off topic tho, once I got a package from Amazon delivered to a Parcel Collect Point. The guy who was at the News Agency charged me $2.99 as a "collection fee".

I knew it was not right, so I asked the guy but he insist that it is the process. So I complaint it to Amazon. After about a month I got an email from the local delivery company and they have credited $10 to my account for the inconvenience.

      Haha, news agency bandit, busted!

  • Is this hot?

  • Order Summary

    Items: USD 27.95
    Shipping & handling: USD 5.09

    Total before tax: USD 33.04
Estimated tax to be collected: USD 0.00

    Order total: USD 33.04

This is neither US$27.04 nor $32.04

    EDIT 1
To be clear, the only options I have at the address stage are my registered address, an:

› Add a new shipping address
    › Edit or delete addresses

    EDIT 2
I checked my banks exchange rate, and even with no fees, the exchange rate they gave for USD32.04 was AUD43.24

    EDIT 2A
Ok, I see, if you use yesterdays exchange rate you get AUD41.86

    • To the right of "Add a new shipping address", it should say "Or search for an Amazon Pickup location near you", and that's where you can select a parcelpoint location.

If it doesn't, possibly Amazon thinks there are none near you?

The extra US$1 is the increase in shipping for shipping to a non-parcelpoint location.

The AUD price was put into the title by one of the mods. The exchange rate seems to be fluctuating a bit today, I use Google to estimate the price: https://www.google.com.au/search?q=32.04+usd+in+aud

At the moment, Google is saying "32.04 US Dollar equals 42.03 Australian Dollar". The Google estimate is usually less than 1% away from what I get charged, using a 28 Degrees credit card. But as the rate seems to be fluctuating, the bank may have upped their rate to make sure they don't lose out. While I've been typing, the Google estimate increased by one cent!

I'm in WA. So, usually we have less (read that as none) pickup locations. We were the last to get Woolworths/BigW click and collect.
Amazon pickup would be convenient once we get it.

28 degrees only publishes their rates for the preceding day. However, if you use one of the bank websites, or Travelex or similar, it should give you a better idea of today's rates.

Edit: But regardless this is a great deal even without the extra $1 and the fluctuating exchange rate.

        • I just tried ordering again, and did a search on "Perth Australia" for parcelpoint locations, and lots turned up. Here is the list I was offered:

There are lots more if I search specific areas. I did a search on postcode 6060 and was offered a list, starting with this one:
          Crystalline Expressions ParcelPoint
Dogswamp Shopping Centre, 6 Wanneroo Rd, Yokine 6060

The farthest location south of Perth I found is:
          Ravenswood Pharmacy ParcelPoint
Shop 2, Lot 410 Lloyd Avenue, Ravenswood 6208

The farthest location north of Perth I found is:
          Clinicare Pharmacy Alkimos ParcelPoint
Unit 1/2K Shorehaven Blvd, Alkimos 6038

I tried several towns outside the SW corner of WA, and couldn't find any locations. If you are in the Perth-Fremantle area, perhaps try an online chat with an Amazon rep? Once you have had a parcelpoint location added, it shows up in your list of shipping addresses, so you can just click on it.

        • @Russ: Cheers for that! About 4 of those locations are within walking distance of home or work. I will try chatting to Amazon to see why I don't have this option.

(Unfortunately I ordered one anyway without the extra $1 discount. Maybe I can cancel my order…)

  • Yeah i'm not getting 'search for an Amazon Pickup location near you' either. i only see this

    http://imgur.com/a/JSG4g

    • What city/town/postcode are you in? I'll have a look.

Do you have any shipping addresses to choose from? Maybe Amazon need an address first, so they can recommend locations near that address.

      • I even created new account and input address details. I know where my closest Parcel Point (Melbourne) is located just can't see it as an option to select any on Amazon US site. Quite bizarre

        • +1

Sign in and do an online chat with Amazon, see if they can add the parcelpoint location manually. Once it is added to your account, it will appear in your list of addresses, and you can just click on it.

        • @Russ: Cheers

Thanks Op! Got the $5 discount for referral.

  • Price has increased from US$29.95 to US$30.73, so I'm expiring the deal.
