  • "Sensory Lab is owned by Salvatore Maletesa" - He sounds like a bean.

  • Awesome stuff.

Thanks for the heads up, OP

  • Thanks OP.

  • Perfect timing. Thanks!

    Free shipping for $50+

  • Amex doesn't work you guys, I ended up using paypal

  • Guys,

How long they can be stored before opening the package ?

Before openning a bag, should I store them in the freezer ?

    Thanks

    • Yes thats fine. Key is don't open the bag before freezing, and also don't open until fully thawed.

    • Taste best when used within 4 weeks or so. Then again, I buy Victoria coffee from the supermarket on special which is already stale according to coffee snobs. I drink it black in a French press and it still tastes good to me. Espresso gets a nice oily crema from fresh beans though.

  • What's the roast date? No point buying this if it's been sitting on a shelf for 3 months…

    • Based on Sensory Lab's reputation and my own experience speaking to their baristas in their stores the roasts are fresh and precise. There is a risk that the coffee is old in bag, but I suspect three reasons why this wouldn't be the case:
      1) I have never purchased a bag in store that was >1 week past roast (roast date was informed on the bag)
      2) the volume of their few (four) cafes means they are consistently roasting out of their Port Melbourne roastery.
      3) they have a subscription service, people who pay monthly for these coffees to be delivered fresh. They know how to roast on/for demand

At $10, with the rep of this brand, it's a safe bet. If not, there will be hell to pay on social media from fellow OzBargainers legitimately complaining!

    • The supermarket bean suppliers would cut them a deal they couldn't refuse for their old beans. I think we're safe.

    • Received mine today - roasted on 14/11/16 !!

  • Can these beans be used in a fully automatic coffee machine like the Jura or Delonghi?

    • Yes, would be fine in a Jura (DeLonghi should be the same). I think it's Jura that say not to use oily beans (you can easily see them 'sweating' oil).

  • Bought 2 lots (2 x 3 x 250g) - it allowed multiples and shipping was still $6

with all that's been said, like all third wave/specialty coffee gigs, sensory lab blends tend to be roasted lighter than what most would expect from their supermarket bought espresso beans/grinds. Without going into too much detail, it's quite likely 3 bags and associated trial and error may not help you acquire the taste for these beans quite yet. Rule of thumb is, the lighter the roast, the smaller the margin of error for grinding and extraction. While output maybe tolerable from most manual sunbeam home setups, I'd say it's best enjoyed with a breville smart grinder + a decent espresso machine like a single/boiler machine (at a bare minumum) with the proper knowhow. Not recommended for super autos as the grinders are calibrated for much darker italian roasts which means lighter roast beans will produce a much coarser grind, resulting in an underextracted cup of coffee.

  • thanks op, great price and always love their beans

  • Ta - ordered 5x3 for $50 to get free shipping (and to have several weeks on the same beans to avoid fiddling with my grinder to get the correct grind). I find 500g tends to last about a fortnight, so this should last for about 3 months.

Will freeze about 3kg of it immediately before opening the bag to preserve lifespan (not opening the bag until at room temp of course).

  • Got mine, cheers OP.

  • Thanks, seems like a good deal. ordered $50 worth and will give some away as gifts!

  • Hhhmm $50 spent and a week's worth of beans sorted.

  • Wow - this deal seems to good to be true.

    Purchased some. Thanks OP.

  • Cheers OP! Bargain

  • says sold out. missed out :(

    • Sadly the deal expired in the 15 mins it took me to check that we still have a coffee grinder.

  • Sunday 10.29 pm: expired

  • Looks like the deal might be over now.
The link to deal no longer works :( "We're sorry, but the page you're looking for could not be found."

  • "sold out" when i was checking out :(

  • ahhh looks like i missed it! seems to be expired now. :(

  • Id be surprised if they are able to do all these orders.

  • Good price for roasted beans, but if you really want save some money (eventually) you want to get into roasting your own. Green beans are around $9-12 kg and can be stored for years. Various ways to roast them from the very crude 'heat gun in a bread maker' or 'popcorn maker' methods to the more civilised Behmor 1600 roaster ($500) and the like.

Very good if you don't live near to a commercial roaster and find the price shipped too high.

Got a shipping notification. Looks like they are honours all the purchases!

  • Coffee snobs will hate me, but I was given 2kg of moccocona instant coffee which i may as well use. i use my gaggia classic to create some frothy milk and butter and it doesnt taste much different to a normal espresso with beans.

    • Free coffee is still free coffee. At least you didn't get *International Roast" hahah

  • +1

Coffee has arrived. Impressed by speed. Says on pack it was roasted on the 14th.

    • Awesome! Enjoy :) I'd leave the beans for a day longer for the beans to settle.

      • +1

usually i leave it a week for them to mature but now i have 3 bags, and i am the only one who does pour over in my house….
so i just brewed the one smells almost settled.
        anyway, smells amazing.

    • I work in Port Melbourne right near the HQ and mine still hasn't arrived.

just got delivered by the courier. Super impressed by the speed!

  • My tracking doesn't work

    • +4

Nor did mine, but has arrived for me.

  • Mine (Parcel Locker address) to Canberra gone walkabout "1 parcel has been transferred to 6502 (sydney) INCORRECT/INSUFFICIENT ADDRESS"… sigh.
Also it appears that it was sent using Couriers Please (not Startrack?)

    • same here , how dumb are they to ship via couriers please knowing its a parcel locker address ….

      • I am still waiting for mine, FYI… They confirmed it was an issue with the ones with Parcel Locker address and were supposed to have re-shipped last week, but nothing as of today (Monday)…

EDIT. And now they have just refunded instead. Sigh I was looking forward to these.

        • Mine hasn't arrived still (I do live far away). No response yet from Sensory Lab re: AWOLness (tracking? nup, doesn't work. "No results found.")

  • Ugh, mine was sent with fastway couriers. They are the absolute worst. Didn't even attempt to deliver it (I was home) and got an email to re organise delivery. They won't even let you send it to another address, which means I can't get it until Monday or Tuesday next week.

  • +1

    Mine was delivered.. sweeeeet.

  • I also got a card from CouriersPlease, I'm assuming its this.

  • +1

Got mine, Couriers Please as well. He just left it in the front yard out of sight from the street. Better than being carded.

  • +3

Got the beans, very fast, roasted on the 14th.
    great quality!
    thanks op again.

    • where did you see the roast date ? evie ?

      • found it :) it was hiding in the bags heat seal.

        • yeah, it is a bit hard to see it after they changed from the previous black package to this one.

  • +1

got mine today delivered by couriers please.
    smells awesome.

    • +2

received another lot today.. no idea why!

However looked at the ordering i only got 1 bag of filter roast pack when i should have got 3.

  • +1

Still haven't received mine, but think it's totally my fault :-(

I mistakenly put the PO Box as my delivery address, not realising that it was using a courier. They called me yesterday and said they couldn't deliver to a PO Box (totally understand that!) and I gave them an updated address, but still nothing (they said on the phone they were on the truck for delivery yesterday). I am wondering if they have gone AWOL.

The tracking details don't work either - so no idea where they are. Will wait until end of day in case they turn up otherwise will call them on Monday.

    Live and learn….PO Box's are a no-no…..!

    • I still haven't got mine either… tracking doesn't work.. no contact from courier…

      Also used PO Box.

Apparently another opportunity may exist for those that missed out…
" we will be emailing out another offer this Sunday. Keep your eyes peeled get in first - there will be a very limited number allocated on our website!"

Bit of a late replay but thanks Sensory Lab (if you are watching)- got the coffee super fast and it smells fresh and delicious.

I'll be checking you out for my next coffee order.

  • +1

Thanks Sensory Lab - fast shipping and a very generous offer.

Have been trying the seasonal blend - 5th day since roast (if bag stamp is correct) - getting better but still too early.

Which of the three peaks earliest?

  • +1

I am going to use them one by one. Don't know whether to freeze the other two bags or just keep them in the shipping box in the pantry. Think I will do the latter to be honest. Anyway first three cups of Steadfast were very nice, espresso, latte and French press. This was the one they reccomended with milk, it was not very complex but the other two sound like they will be more flavourful. Significantly tastier than my old Vitoria supermarket beans!

  • +1

We never freeze our beans, granted 250g lasts only a few weeks for us. Just put them in a cool space in the pantry and they should be right.

  • tried the seamless first up, very light roast still has white flecks in the grind. Clean and bright but a little underwhelming for me. Hoping for better from the steadfast blend as it sounds more to my taste.

    • Flecks? Like chaff?

      • +1

there was no loose chaff in the bag. Just had a close look and a few of the beans have a very light section in the crease (no idea of the correct terminology beanatomy) Basically its a very light roast, not bad but I wouldn't order again

  • Hmmm. Only made 1 cup so far, but it was pretty bad (compared to the beans I roast). Hopefully either it will get better or the other two bags are better.

    • which variety?

      • Not Seasonal or Steadfast ( I chucked the bag so can't remember the name).

        • must be seamless then, thats the one Ive tried still adjusting grind etc to see if it gets better, reckon a longer extraction might help

    • I found the 'Seamless' very impressive! Ground for an espresso machine and served as a flat(ish) white. The 'Steadfast' seemed a bit in-your-face and a touch bitter. 'Seasonal' to go…
