American Express Qantas Ultimate Card - 100,000 Bonus Qantas Points, Complimentary Domestic Flight ($450 Annual Fee)

690

American Express have today increased the sign on bonus for the Qantas Ultimate card to up to 100,000 Qantas frequent flyer points when you sign up via the standard link, or 112,500 points with a referral.

To apply, you must have a household gross (pre-tax) annual income of $65,000 or more (note that this used to be personal income only - so people with lower incomes will be heartened that AMEX has now expanded this to 'household').

The annual fee for this card is fairly steep, at $450, but 112,500 Qantas points is one of the most generous Qantas sign on bonuses on offer at the moment. In addition to the bonus points you'll receive a complimentary Qantas domestic return Economy flight every year after your first Card spend on selected Qantas products and services and up to two entries per year to the American Express Lounge at Sydney International (Kingsford Smith) Airport. A range of comprehensive insurances is also provided.

Bonus point eligibility
As usual, the terms and conditions state that card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Consumer Credit Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.
Reports abound from users who currently have active AMEX cards and are still receiving bonus points on other new AMEX card sign on deals. I am unsure as to whether that will apply for this card (but will report back on my experience as an existing AMEX cardholder once known - as usual, your mileage may vary.

Domestic flight redemption locations
There are decent redemption options available for the annual Qantas return domestic flight (e.g. Perth to a number of East coast cities, Adelaide to Brisbane). You'll find the table of locations buried at Page 29 of the card terms and conditions here: https://icm.aexp-static.com/Internet/IntlHomepage/japa/AU_en…

Below are some suggested ways to maximise value from your 112,500 Qantas points (all bookable via the Qantas website):
* SYD / MEL / ADEL / BRIS to Auckland return in Emirates first class - 108,000 points (plus approx $190 taxes)
* Adelaide to Rome one way in Emirates business class - 112,000 points (plus around $400 taxes)
* Sydney to Hong Kong return in Cathay Pacific business class - 105,000 points (plus around $160 taxes)
* MEL / SYD to Singapore, flying Emirates first class suites - 90,000 points one way (plus around $300 taxes)

To obtain the sign on bonus of 112,500 bonus points, you will need to apply with a referral link from the wiki:

Hi all. Took me awhile, but I've finally met the minimum spend on this card and wanted to report that I've received the bonus points as an existing AMEX customer:) I currently hold the Explorer and recently closed the Platinum Edge. Plus churned 3 other AMEX cards this year.

    • I just got my 112,500 points too :D

    • How long did you have the Explorer for?

So that would be 5 cards now in 2016, all of which you got bonus points for?

      • Yes, that's correct. I've held the Explorer for 3 months. I plan to hold onto it for the long term as it has across the board good points earn rates.

        • Winner. I'll give it a go then. Worst case the benefits pay for the annual fee.

        • @rochow: Alternatively, if your bonus doesn't post, you can always ring up and cancel the card immediately for a full refund, or a couple of months down the track for a generous pro rate refund (I received $295 back from the Velocity Platinum annual fee when I cancelled it after 3 months. I hadn't used the free flight). AMEX have always been happy to process annual fee refunds for me.

        • @The Champagne Mile: How would you get that, as in what would you say is the reason for canceling so soon?

        • @rochow: Usually when I cancel, it's because I want to open up a new card, and AMEX has a limit of just 2 cards - so I mention that x card looks better, so I want to cancel y card. I've also said that on reflection, the card doesn't offer value for me, as I have no use for the amenity (e.g. don't plan to take the complimentary flight).

        • @The Champagne Mile: great thanks a lot!

    • So you had 2 cards at the same time and you got bonus? That is encouraging. Just because I had the essential card, I was afraid of applying for explorer and instead went for ANZ Black AND Woolworth with the combined bonus on these being 105000 points.

Will apply in a few months for the explorer if I know the bonus is guaranteed, but do I need to call them or anything?

    • Great news!

    • How long did it take? I spent $1,500 a week or two ago (within a week of approval) and no Qantas points :( Hopefully bonus points are done at end of the statement month with the others?

      • Sounds like the points should have come through. The points won't display on the main screen until they transfer 7 days before your statement period. Have you clicked into the link that states 'view points summary' to check if the bonus points are listed there?

        • Where is that?

I can see Explorer stuff under "Rewards" section. On the main login screen I can see transactions and so forth, nothing about points though.

        • @rochow: You mentioned Qantas points originally, so I thought you meant the Qantas Ultimate card, which my instructions relate to. However, above, you mention the Explorer (which doesn't offer Qantas points). Which card are you waiting on bonus points for?

        • @The Champagne Mile: I have Explorer and can see those transactions + related points under Rewards. Qantas Ultimate shows nothing about points anywhere I can see. I'm waiting for the Qantas points.

        • @rochow: Do you have both accounts under the one login? If so, you need to go to the Qantas Ultimate summary screen and then click on the 'view points summary' link on the right hand side of the screen to see if bonus points have been credited.

  • Hi Guys,

Has anyone current holding amex discovery card managed to get sign up bonus points from this amex qantas ultimate card. Thank you so much.

  • Ok so I tried to trigger the qantas spend by offsetting carbon on a fake flight with qantas costing $0.83 but it didn't work. I read somewhere that minimum $1 offset could work.

    Anyone been successful with this?

    • I think that from other deals, people bought fully refundable fares (Eg business class etc) say 11 months in advance and later cancelled the flight. If I recall correctly, I did that too, and no problems.

  • Can anyone confirm the reward program this card defaults to? Is it Ascent, Gateway, or another?

    • It's a straight transfer to Qantas (the points sweep over once a month, 7 days before your statement date).

  • Just a question. Can you get a return flight from Perth to melbourne with the complimentary Flight? Or will it only be Complimentary from Perth to Melbourne only and not the return flight?

    Cheers!!

    • Yes, confirming it's a return flight (and Perth to Melbourne is an allowed route).

      • great thank you!!! so definitely the Melbourne to Perth segment is included?

        • Yes, you can fly Perth to Melbourne, then Melbourne back to Perth using the free flight.

  • Can anyone confirm the top-up points from Qantas store will enable the free flight (despite what the PDS says)?

    Thanks

Used your referral link rep and just got the card today.

  • Has anyone had any luck with getting the points while also holding another amex card?
