  • 4% Cashrewards?

  • Is it worth upgrading from this —-> http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/products/computers/satellite/pro… to the 17 inch thing above for $960?

    • +2

Nope, your current CPU is a decent quad core, you'd be going down to a crappy ultra low power dual core.

Whack another 4GB of RAM and and SSD into your current machine and it'll fly

    • +1

I agree. 4GB of RAM isn't actually really that limiting but it's cheap to upgrade anyway, but the 5400RPM spinning rust, that stuff belongs in the bin :)

Stick an SSD in it and windows will feel 10 times snappier. Re-use the drive for something else.

  • Inspiron 15 Gaming is a bit disappointing. Okay, maybe 6700HQ could be too much of asking, but at least they could have swap 1TB HDD for 256GB SSD which is roughly same price anyway.

    • +2

Its a good machine for $1200. Don't think I'd buy it for the full price though

Inspiron series for game ? I guess you should look into alienware series or at least XPS.

        • This inspiron has the specs of an XPS - they now make Inspirons for the cheaper end of the gaming market

        • It has very similar specs to the base model XPS 15 - just without the lightweight chassis and smaller bezels of the XPS range. Gaming performance is nearly identical.

Also, it has a spare SODIMM slot for an extra 8GB RAM, and a spare M.2 slot to add an SSD. $150 of DIY upgrades makes this a very good value gaming rig.

The lowest spec Alienware 15 is definitely a better performer (the base model has a GTX 1060) but it's also more than $1000 more expensive.

        • I assume the FHD of the Inspiron 15 gaming is IPS?

        • @Wampus: Yes, they are nearly identical, but the built quality are vary.

        • +1

@dlovep: I agree, though the XPS machines aren't on the level of their business grade Latitudes etc either. But you pay $500+ less for the Inspiron so it's horses for courses

    • Anyone know what type of RAM this laptop takes? I read that the cruicial 8gb DDR3l SODIMM (204pin) was compatible. I bought a stick and tried to install, turns out its doesnt fit! Will go back to the store tomorrow to exchange but need to know what to exchange it for.

      • nvm… found out! Its DDR4 2400 SODIMM (for those who might also want to know…)

  • Oh man.. I bought it from Ebay 20% sale before.

  • Is it worth upgrading to XPS 13 from Asus N56? Its big and heavy and always running hot using Excel.

    • I'll take your XPS 13 - happy to pay (PM me please), if you are really interested in upgrading.

      • +2

        Wrong way mate

      • I don't have a XPS 13. I'd like to get one too

        • The Asus N56 range have a quad-core processor, and depending on the model the Asus it may also have a discrete GPU. It's significantly more powerful than even the latest XPS 13.

Having said that, Excel is not a demanding application unless you are working on massive spreadsheets, so you probably wouldn't notice much difference in speed…and the reduction in weight and heat would be considerable.

Up to you - they're quite different machines designed for entirely different purposes.

        • @klaw81:

Thanks, yeh its its the Quad core, and has the gt650 card. I just want mobility and better battery. I don't play games anymore, got a PS4 now. Anyone else get the XPS 13 cheaper than this price?

        • @Kuro: XPS 13 will definitely be better for your needs, if you don't need the grunt.

The Inspiron 11 3000 has been down to $319.20 on ebay a few times. Suggest waiting for another ebay voucher/sale.

    • +2

yeah thats the one with the 4gb ram and quad pentium too, 128gb ssd.

    • Or keep an eye on the Dell Factory Outlet. I paid $420 for the 2in1 version earlier in the year.

  • +2

Ah poo. Wish there were some monitors in this frenzy….

  • XPS are all only 15% off.

  • +2

The eBay 20% was far better for the XPS recently. The i7 was reduced to $2099 plus there was another 20% off. That was for the 7th gen to.

    • How was there another 20% off the 7th gen?

  • +1

    2 Monitors are 20% off

    S2415H and S2716DG

Not really frenzy worthy discounts but it may be coincidental that they are on sale now.

    • DFO had 2 refurbished U2412Ms for $190 earlier today ^^

  • Will the inspiron 15 5000 i5 be able to play DotA 2?

    • +1

Dota2 is very forgiving on low end systems. Haven't tried dota 2 yet on a Skylake Core i5's built in graphics but I have played it on seriously low end systems, including the built in GPU on my Core i5 2500k (which is from 2013).

      • Did it run smoothly? I'm deciding between the i7 and i5 (inspiron 15). Leaning towards the i7 since it's got a 1080p screen. Would also come with more vram (4gb)

  • Looks like the Inspiron 7566 gaming laptop might have red WASD keys like other gaming laptops, and unlike the previous 7559. Some might like it or hate it or not care.

    • +1

Doesn't show special key colours on the product listing. But some videos on Youtube have show what appears to be the same model with red WASD keys - not sure what's going on there.

Someone plz comment on inspiron 17 5000 i7 plz. Trying to make up my mind if i should get it and whether its worth $960. Thanks

    • I am asking as well. It is cheaper than eBay deals.

    • If a 17" screen on a laptop is important to you, it's probably the best specced 17" that I can find at the moment. Dell warranty is excellent too. Hard drives and memory can be upgraded quite easily if needed.

  • Never ever buy Dell laptops. They are the worst! I shudder thinking about the time I bought the top-end Dell Studio model back in 2009 only to have to spend almost half the cost of the laptop in repairs over four years. Finally sold it to a bloke for a throwaway price in 2014

    • I deal with many different brands of laptops professionally on a daily basis and I can tell you the Dells are much better than most of the others! Sorry you had a bad experience

      • Same here. I work with different brands of laptops professionally on a daily basis and I still think Dell is among the worst. You are safe as long as you are in the warranty/extended warranty period. Their builds look good for the price but its real cheap quality and it wont last long. We have had two Dell laptops in the family (Studio and XPS) and they both had MAJOR issues as soon as the warranty period ran out. I even had a Vostro for a while as a work computer and that didnt have major issues in 7 months except for the occasional blue screen of death when the laptop was moved suddenly and overheating but even that felt real tacky and cheap.
I have not used a Dell laptop in almost a year now so I cant give an honest opinion about the newer models but I would never ever ever go back to using a Dell machine. I hate the brand with all my heart (I had a really bad experience)

  • Is there likely to be a sale similar to this in the next few months? need a new laptop for UNI + gaming
