Not really that cheap… I didn't try very hard to find the absolute cheapest, but for example:

GBP 1.97 (about $3.34) on Ebay here

USD 2.78 (about $3.77) on Ebay here

OK, those are 20c to 60c more expensive, however Most people would consider it's easier buying from Ebay using Paypal than from AliExpress.

Also remember that you also need some form of front bezel, or it will look shite.

The slightly more expensive traditional metal framed caddies like this $4 one are probably better quality than the cheapo all plastic, even though you get a bonus screwdriver.

Buyer beware there are 2 different thickness for the DVD bay

    • Says 12.7mm

  • Can someone tell me how this is universal? I figured for starters it's only Sara (fair enough, no one is upgrading an IDE laptop these days) but can you rely on the screw hole being in the right spot and the outer Sata plug and any given laptop?

    • can you rely on the screw hole being in the right spot and the outer Sata plug and any given laptop?

YES - Sata laptop drives are a standard size and connector position. Same as 2.5" Hard drives, 3.5" hard drives, Video Cards, and many other standard computer components.

Note that there are 2 thicknesses, and 12.7mm is VERY old and ancient.

      • Wow, you learn something new every day! I have to say in the many years I have been here I have never had to replace an optical drive in a laptop, but it's great to know. Might check some of my laptops to see if the drives are Sata or not. Thanks!

  • Anyone know if you can get the opposite of this just as cheap? I am looking for an external caddy to turn an old DVD RW drive into an external USB one. Looking on ebay cheapest is about 17 delivered which is a fair way from this (shopping express has a new external drive for 28+del)
