Would grab it with two Amex cards if not already have got MacBook Pro 128gb for less than $800 during the good guys sale.

    • is this still running?

    • How did you get a MBP for less than $800?

      • I paid $1399(minus …$400 gift cards+$250 cash back from low rate CBA card)

        • +2

So… Amex? What about the two Amex cards you mentioned? Also, $400 gift card is still $400 AUD (well, maybe you can get it for $360 or a little bit less), and the $250 you can get it from CBA anyway. So you paid $1399, not less than $800.

        • -3

@alwynpan: Amex is not used but I pointed to use Amex at HN for this deal. You are right but those gift cards are from loyalty points from various ways(flybuys, amex, wollies etc)..also forgot to mention the TRS at airport..

        • @HardyBro:

You paid $1,399 Or 9.09% less due to TRS…

        • +5

          @HardyBro:

Bro, don't forget the $500 you got from your granny. It actually cost you only $121.83 after all that. That's a steal, bro!

@alwynpan: It's free if you just received your wage from Mc Donalds.

4gb isn't much memory though. Should be 8gb minimum.

    • -1

This. No cheap, buy no deal imo.

    • Genuine question / thought. Most people would use a tablet like this for fairly basic work, no? Would 8gb make a big difference? Do you think if it had 8gb then it'd be a pretty solid allrounder, albeit not for games / heavy digital media work etc

      • No for many users.

      • I got my Samsung Ativbook Pro 700T1C (4GB, i5 2xxxm) for $599 from Dick Smith many many many many years ago (maybe three years?), still a good notebook for general uni work, coding in Java with Eclipse is OK. But it barely runs Android Studio, takes forever to run an app (I think the bottleneck is both CPU and RAM). For these just use it for Internet, Office stuff, 4G is good enough.

        • +1

          Eclipse is OK

Eclipse with 4GB of ram! You sir are a brave man. That IDE eats ram like Skittles.

      • Yeah it should be fine for basic work. Once upon a time 4GB of RAM was more than enough but but nowadays the OS itself has a lot more memory-hungry processes running in the background. Currently on my desktop Windows 10 alone uses 1.7GB of RAM. If the SP4 follows suit then this would leave you with 2GB-2.5GB of RAM for other programs, which for a few applications should be fine.

That said, it's possible soon enough you'll be able to get an 8GB RAM 256GB model for $200-$200 more (based on my experience buying an SP3 approximately this long after release)

    • +3

Windows 10 runs happily on 2GB so 4GB is fine for many users.

I have had the SP4M3 for over a year. For everyday web browsing, email, office apps etc it's fine. I've even run Photoshop to post-process photos (no huge layer stacks).

      Good points:
      1) It can run full blown windows programs in a tablet format.

      Bad points:
      1) Buggy drivers ("sleep of death", pen and touch intermittent failures, etc… see the reddit surface subreddit for more).
      2) Poor battery life compared to a tablet (5 hrs web browsing).
      3) Shitty build reliability. Just out of warranty my touch digitizer developed a dead stripe down the centre of the screen and phantom touches. I have to disable touch in device manager or it is unusable. The pen has become intermittent. New battery. Still have to take the battery out 5-10 times a day to get the pen working again.

Would I recommend it? Only if you are prepared to put up with a lot of bugs/hardware problems. It's a great form factor for a full blown windows machine but the reliability just isn't there yet.

I'm a bit confused. The ad says that the surface pen is not included, but I thought the pen was normally already IN the box when purchasing?

Do they take it out of the box or am I mixed up and the pen comes normally as a seperate item?

    • +3

Guessing the Apple using marketing monkey who made the ad got confused with iPad Pro.

    • its possibly included, check on the microsoft website. If anything, don't totally believe in Harvey Norman Advertising Dept. They tried to sell me extended warranty on a phone because their system says it only got 1 year. I went home check and its actually 2 years.

      • +1

The website unfortunately confirms it's not included.

I told you to check Microsoft website cos HN knows sh*t about their products
          https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/pdp/Surface…
          AND YES, it is included!

        • +1

@mcp2kpro: I think you should check the Harvey Norman link I put above. THIS version specifically (DQR-00007) doesn't include the pen. :(

The link you put is to the normal M3 version that does include it, but Harvey Norman are selling that one for $150 more. It is advertised on the same page here: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/computers-tablets/ipads-surfa…

I was aware that the Surface Pro 4 normally includes the pen, hence why I was concerned when I saw the ad.

It's obviously a new package - haven't seen it before.

@timmysbiscuits: I'm not 100% sure if there's actually any version of surface pro where they take the pen off. Microsoft website has always has it included. It's a Microsoft product and HN only sell it after all.
I'm just saying based on my experience dealing with their sale & advertising team. They are actually clueless.
To be sure, go to a HN shop, get them to take the box for you and check it. Tell them that you're 100% sure the pen is in there and their website is wrong :)

        • +2

@timmysbiscuits: My apology, someone just bought it and confirmed no pen nor apple.
No idea which stock HN is selling

  • +1

Wow I paid 1.3k for it just a few months ago. :(

    • this model is M3, not i5…

      • Yeah… I got the M3… Well it was with the typecover too, so say 1.1k for the M3 alone

  • Got one, very good for day to day tasks. Runs very cool as it is fanless. Ie no annoying surface pro fan noises !!

Fully capable to be a home/work/uni laptop. Very light.

Touch screen is awesome, so is the pen.

Smooth as butter and a bargain!

Cons: keyboard costs $200, can't play games on it. Battery life is 5 hrs max.

    • Do you happen to use Lightroom with it? Or mild video editing?

      • Haven't done video editing but I have post-processed photos in Photoshop CS6 on the SP4 M3. Slowish but not unbearable. Does require a manifest file work around for menu scaling.

        • Thank you. Was thinking of XPS 13. Maybe will go for that one.

        • @amts: go for the xps if you want to video/photo edit. It had trouble when I was using adobe premier to edit my GoPro videos.

        • @Alfonso: Yeah, going with the XPS.

  • +1

Looks like this model (DQR-00007) doesn't come with a "surface pen" ($90) or a "type cover" ($180) .

  • OMG!!!! I have the Surface 3 for 1 year but this is too sweet to pass!

  • Am I right to believe there are lots of signs that Microsoft will be coming out with a new surfacey-laptop product very soon?

    • Rumors are saying early next year yes.

    • I thought they already did that with the Surface Book?

      • Refreshed the book but didn't touch the pro. They were smart to wait this year as they released too early last year with the sp4. (Bug issues)

  • +4

Just got one… can confirm no pen or cover.
