Just saw this post on Facebook.

I've tried the Shiromaru Motoaji before and it's amazing!

Worth a try!

For $10, definitely worth a try! At their normal prices, not so much; better places in Sydney

    • +2

Yeah, not worth the price for me.

    • +1

Yep. I used shopsmall on them last month. Was great.

  • Whereabouts is this?

    • Sydney. I think there's four locations (Westfield Sydney, Macquarie Centre, Chatswood Interchange and Central Park)

    • You can view the stores here.

  • Its an awesome Ramen shop from Japan. Pity there are non in Melbourne :(

    • Melb has lots of good ramen… Ippudos offering in Sydney is hardly close to the real deal anyway

  • For those who have been to Japan, how does this compare to ramen from there?

    • +2

Taste-wise reasonably well. The big difference is price though. It's not that difficult to get just as good or better ramen at less than half the same price as Aus.

    • +2

from my experience, the ramen that I had in Japan sh1ts all over any ramen in Sydney, but it is back to personal taste.

    • I've tried it in Osaka and Sydney I would say the Osaka one was just that slightly better.
If I remember correctly it was also cheaper and larger.

  • What are people's recommendations for good ramen at this price in Sydney?

      1. Ippudo
      2. Menya
      3. Ryo's
      4. Manpuku
      • +3

ewww Menya? you've gotta be joking right?

        • +4

what's wrong with Menya? this is the proper ramen shop near market city right? even my Japanese friend in uni recommended this one.

        • +2

@shadowness: love menya. Another good place is Yasaka.

        • +1

@kolorijo: LMAO your name. I should try Yasaka as well then.

        • @shadowness: big grin

        • Lionmaru-G, I agree. My Menya experience wasn't nice, went in with high expectations :(

        • +1

@shadowness: Menya is not authentic enough.. their standard slipped way down when they start hiring more Thai "chief" to do the ramen. LOL! Their Ramen soup base is a joke.

        • @Lionmaru-G: I see now. come to think of it I havent been there for 2 years. so I didn't know they have Thai chefs lol.

      • +1

I'd put Ryo's and Manpuku (and Yasaka and Ramen Zundo) above Ippudo myself

    • +1

      Zundo is not bad too

    • Hakata-Maru Ramen in chanatown or chatswood.
Best value for tonkotsu ramen, extra bowl of noodles for $1 still?

Ippodu serves better chashu (thicker and leaner)

    • +1

My pick is Ikkyu. Superb taste and value.

    • My favourite at a cheaper price is Gumshara. The location and ambience is deflating but the soup is nice (if you like thick pork bone broth). They do not use MSG either in their soups.

    • 1 for me is Manpuku in Kingsford.

      • Also in Chatswood!

  • +2

My top 4 Ramen in Sydney are all just as good as what i got from Japan. In no particular order: 1) Ryos (Nth Syd) 2) Menya (CBD i found is better than haymarket) 3) Ramen kan (Haymarket) and 4) ichi-Ban Boshi (Bondi Junciton)

One of my favorite ramen/udon places in Japan was http://www.mimikou.jp/english/ in Kyoto

    • +2

My favourite is Gumshara (but getting worse these days because of the crowd), Yasaka, Hakata Maru, Menya and Zundo.

      • Still havent tried the famous gumshara ramen, when i explained to the missus why they are famous (so gelatinous and thick broth) she pulled a face that said that does not sound appealing - Haha!

        • +1

Gumshara is definitely an acquired taste. Had it once, never again. Manpuku is pretty good but their prices have increased since they opened.

      • +1

Same here! Gumshara, Ryo, Menya and Zundo :) Haven't tried Yasaka yet.

        Ippudo is overrated for me.

        • Ippudo is overrated for me too. But same as Ryos. But that's just my personal preference.

@ chriskq. Ask your missus to try Yasaka. Ex chef apparently opened it and flavourwise is the not as gelatinous :)

I forgot. Manpuku is one of my favourites too :D

        • @dailek: Thanks for the tip! Wil do :)

      • Wait, how can the crowd make the ramen at Gumshara worse?

        • Sorry for super late reply. The last couple of times I've been there. They give very very less soup just enough to cover the noodles and also the soup isn't hot. It's barely even warm. (could be just my bad luck)

        • @dailek: I see. Thx

    • I didn't like Menya at Haymarket, I think I'll give the one in CBD a go! Thanks.

      • +1

Its the only place i know of that does a Karami Tonkotsu Ramen (chilli pork mince) and is my favorite. Similar to a tan-tan-men but better.

        • Ooh I'll give that a try next time, thanks!

  • +3

For people like myself who don't eat out much in Sydney it's normally $15/$16.

Travelling in Asia too often really de-calibrates your food price barometer :)

I was wating for a promo in nov during amex shopsmall and not there. now just dec their promo come out!…

still too expensive n small food without staking discount

    • +1

Ippudo was part of Shop Small in November.

  • +2

I supply the meats for IPPUDO

    Great place to eat!

    • +1

The meats are great! Love the pork!

  • +2

If you're around the town hall area, I'd recommend Tenkomori, it's a very budget friendly place to eat and it's quite nice!

  • Also note that ippudo at Central Park don't allow takeaway of ramen

  • +1

    $3 Sapporo also.

  • +2

Had the $10 Akamaru Shinaji for $10 and Sapporo beer for $3 at the Sydney Westfield Ippudo. So satisfying! Although it's quite busy as you'd expect.
    Thanks OP :)

  • Went there last night, it look like smaller than normal.

    • So did I; serving size looks the same to me (I eat there frequently during my lunch break)

      • May be, I have only been there twice.

  • How did you guys get $3 Sapporo? It's $8.5 for me

    • +1

Show them the above facebook post and ask them why they charged you $8.50 when it's supposed to be $3

      • +1

Sorry my bad, just realized it's $3 at the westfield branch only. I went to the other branch
