Seems over priced for essentially a wifi IR relay

Think you can do the same with a Broadlink Black bean for under $20?

    • +5

Yep, I have the bigger RM2 model (transmits 315Mhz & 433Mhz RF as well as IR) and it works very well for this function, plus many others. Can control power points, stereos, DVD and lots of other stuff. I got it from Aldi for $40, with a set of 4 power point controllers.

Considering this is a single-purpose device without any expandability, this appears to be a massive rip-off, albeit with what looks like a bit nicer interface compared to the Broadlink app.

Also using the Aldi hub. Controls ac in lounge & bedroom via RF & IR within line of site of hub in lounge. Includes remote to control power points in addition to using hub. Can be expanded with additional power points & should work with other RF controlled devices.

I got hub, 4 power points & remote plus extra box of 4 power points & remote for $40 because of a pricing error. So certainly a cheap deal.

Saw 1 set of hub, 4 power points & remote in a Brisbane Aldi for $50 last week. It's been sitting there for a very long time.

Downside is RF power points which need resetting after power outage. 1 power point failed under warranty - was sent 4 + remote as replacement. Hub works well.

I knew I'd seen something similar. I wonder if TA or monty.melb can hook us up a deal somewhere. I'd buy 3 at least!
      edit: PM'd monty.melb

    • Yep, granted that the Black Bean is far cheaper and more versatile device for those with a reasonable level of technical aptitude. But for my parents, no thank you. They were wondrous that I could control my AC remotely with Black Bean….so I wanted to get them something similar for Christmas. This fits the bill for them.

I use the Broadlink Universal Wi-Fi + IR Remote Controller which I got for $13 Delivered from Everbuying. which works for remote controlled A/C units. It costs $20 now but cheaper than spending $160+ on Airpatrol plus you can control any other IR devices you want. I guess it depends if you want the extra data + monitoring Airpatrol provides.

  • "…works with all major heat pumps, air conditioners…", you know, except ones with hardwired controls… thanks air patrol

    • "… works with everything except a lot of those things!"

Seems like a wanky IR wifi controller, the broadlink ones are great. Sure, it has a thermometer- but just add a smart thermometer to that.

  • This one replaces your lost remote and control AC online work fine with my Panasonic and Daikin. (2.4ghz wireless N only)

  • is this a joke? seriously

  • Ever wanted to or needed to control your Air Conditioner when you're away from home?

Not really, no. I consider that a waste of energy.

  • Ok, I want something to be able to control my spa remotely, but it doesn't have a remote so these options won't do.

I could get away with a wifi PowerPoint, but as far as I've found, these are only 10A at most, and my spa pulls about 12A. Any ideas?
