  • this appears to be $618 normally .. which means with a 25% discount you pay $464.00.

if you want legit copies of windows, office 2010 and a few other apps, this would be quite good .. especially seeing that if you get them separately its expensive as

can you please advise where you get $337 from ?

    • My bad, $337 is for Standard not Professional. I'll update the details above.

Personally I'd rather get Standard for personal use. Professional would only be useful for anyone working with enterprise software. So not useful to many people but technically it's still a discount code so I suggest we leave it here for whoever needs it.

    • TechNet Standard is $337

I agree that for some people/IT this could be a really good deal.

For me, as I'm seeking a laptop, I'm better off just getting windows 7 with that.. and downloading openoffice.

For those of you who don't know, http://www.openoffice.org is a free community version of the office suite.
That's right.. it emulates the office suite (the best it can) but is completely free to download.

Also, I hear that microsoft will/have released a free web-browser versions of the office suite to compete against gmail/google abilities.

    • They have :)

    • +1 for mentioning OO in a balanced light and not saying it is a fully fledged suite. OO is great, at what it does (don't mean that sarcastically).

I'm not sure, but ad-supported versions of Word 2010 and Excel 2010 were supposed to replace Works Suite, wonder if it's only available to OEMs or to everyone.. could be interesting.

      Might wanna look at http://go-oo.org/
Go-oo is pretty much OpenOffice + better Microsoft binary file support. It offers slightly better compatibility with Microsoft Office documents, if you deal heavily with VBA macros, might want to give this a try.

      • I have been using Go-OO.org since 3.1 and it is actually quite good comparing to the standard OO.o builds.

I am a long time OpenOffice.org fan though. Been using StarOffice since 3.1 days on OS/2 :P Having way too many .sd* files that I am now locked into it and no way I can "migrate" to MS Office.

  • any idea when this expires? (the discount)

    • Unfortunately it doesn't say

  • Damn got mine less than a week ago!

  • TechNet Professional replaced the TechNet Plus. Unfortunately, TechNet Pro is more expensive. You could get TechNet Plus for around $380 with the discount code.

However, Microsoft now introduces TechNet Standard. Pity there is no discount code available for TechNet Standard yet.

Difference between Pro and Standard… basically you don't get some of the Enterprise server software (e.g. SQL Server Enterprise edition, BizTalk Enterprise edition)… you do get the Standard edition for those software. You do get Windows 7 Enterprise and Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. Would be fantastic to get a 25% off code for Standard.
