As a man who owns this remote I'll tell you it uses a shit ton of battery's. Factor in either a battery charger or you can plug a powerbank into its use on the top (this is what I do)

But sir, this is OzBargain.. home of the Eneloop hoarders!

Present your Eneloops for inspection, Mr Fish!

As a man who owns two of these (living room and the bedroom), I can testify that it hardly uses batteries, especially if you consider that it has a color LCD and back-lighting for a ton of buttons. I maybe have to change batteries every six months or so. And, of course, I use Eneloops!

Fantastic remote by the way (although I paid around $40 a few years ago), and arguably better than their much more expensive ones with fewer buttons.

      • I had one them 24 pack target poo batterys for $1 every 2 nights I had to change them rofl. That said my bed sheets cause the lights to light up for some reason?

        • Lol, I wouldn't call that normal usage though…

        • @elektron: sitting it on a bed or target poo batterys? Anyway I tend to keep the light on no matter how much I try not to.

        • @Slippery Fish: The former… Anyway, in that case you MUST pick up some Eneloops right now!

        • @elektron: I havnt seen a deal with the fast charger that screamed BUY ME!!!!!

On the other hand the good guys gave me a free power bank.

        • @Slippery Fish: You're right, but this may help tie you over until an Eneloop deal comes up:

    • I change the rechargeables in mine every two or three months

Are you using those discounted Target batteries? They're horrible!

      • Yes, yes they are.

        • That's your problem. Those batteries are woeful. Cheap but not worth the hassle of frequently replacing them. Especially in my Xbox 360 controllers. Garreghhh

    • umm… I tend to use my remote everyday (but not really multiple times a day).
I use it to turn all my devices on and off (typically once a day) adjust the volume (less than 5 times a day usually).

Maybe i dont use my remote as frequent as you, but i get months of battery life out of mine?

Its running on Eneloops (Harmony 700)

      • My comment was more aimed at comparing to regular remote, my Aldi TV remote has 3 yo batterys lol

        • Ah i guess you cant really make a fair comparison like that. Still 3 months between charges is still pretty good i think. And then when you do need to charge just plug it into your powerbank

        • @nairdajun: fair enough, ive just used the bank as a battery lol. Its a great remote though isnt it :)

I have one as well and it doesn't chew through batteries for me. I think I use eneloop rechargeables. Good remote though

    • Have you ever used anything else for comparison? My 650 lasts about 3 months compared to my old 525 which would go for 18 months on the same batteries.
If they made the 650 with an old fashioned low drain b&w screen, it'd be the perfect remote for me.

      • I have not used any other smart remotes recently. I don't replace batteries every three months, maybe every year but probably longer. it controls a tivo, foxtel, tv and yamaha avr which are used every day.

I don't use it exclusively though, perhaps 50% of total remote usage.

  • Anyone here know if these can be used as a TIVO replacement remote?

    • +1

Yep. I bought a Tivo without a remote a while back, and just added the Tivo as a device to my Harmony, and it worked no probs.

    • yes I use it for tivo but I haven't worked out how to map some functions like slow motion or forward skip. otherwise good.

      • +2

You can just assign these to any buttons you chose using their software. As I recall, you can even drag and drop a Tivo remote function to a Harmony button of your choice.

        • thanks, I thought there was a way but I will have to give it a try. The tivo remote has been bounced off the floor more times than a basketball, and is not working 100%.

    • I also use it as a Tivo replacement (among other things). I'm always amazed how it manages to put the Tivo in standby mode when I turn on the TV. Even though it takes about 10 seconds, at least I don't have to do it manually, like I had to with the original Tivo remote.

By the way, most of the buttons just work, but there are a couple that I had to assign manually.

      • Unreal, thanks guys very helpful. Couldn't find anything on the net about it. Will get one to replace 3 remotes. Cheers.

  • I have an Android Box that has a small remote to run Kodi, would the logitech remote work with that ?

    • Yup - the 650 works with my no name Android box. But I prefer to use my BT air mouse since it has a k/b.

    • Mine runs a Beelink X2 just fine.

  • really want to get a Harmony Hub but can't find one anywhere. I posted on here a while ago about getting one, a dude got in contact with me, but then after a series of messages, when trying to arrange a pickup, he just stopped replying. Very annoying and still don't have a hub. If anyone has one, let me know.

  • Great remote! I use it for my TV, Yamaha Receiver and NUC (running Kodi as an HTPC).

    • It certainly is.

      I use my one for:
Lounge - TV, receiver, rPi running Kodi, Sony Blu-ray and a Topfield PVR
Bedroom - TV with attached Chromecast

  • My kids refuse to use the 650 as somehow they keep changing the active device accidentally and this means the remote doesn't control the tv (and that pieces them right off!). They are all under 7yo.

My kids refuse to use the 650

Think of it as an additional feature

  • Bought this a few years ago for about $30 on sale from Good guys excellent remote. Works with foxtel, TV, blu-ray and amp. Battery is fine. I change the batteries every 4 or so months.

Don't think officeworks price match online only stores but could be wrong

    • Yes but include postage

    • I price matched Umart online price, not including delivery.

Good remote… but the buttons tend to wear out (as in you have to press the button real hard for it to work). This has happened to 2 650s.
    :(
