  • how is sensory lab compared to coastal coffe and mannabeans?

i just dropped $100 on a aeropress + beans with coastal, le sigh. So 8 bags is too many!

They are good, quality beans. I became a convert through this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/275483

      • +1

Same, these are good. I'll be buying again.

      • same here. shipping was messy for me, but they fixed it and sent out another batch with different shipping company. really good service, quick responses, and the coffee will mean i will return for more.

    • I just tried their beans with my aeropress. I like.

      • are they roasted for espresso or plunger?

        • Espresso

Now to see how quickly I can get through 10 x packs of coffee :)

well i didnt wake up today expecting to spend $200 on coffee products, but such is ozbargain life

  • I got the 3 pack deal above - 1 pack was not very good, but the second is ok (I think it's the Steadfast).

  • Damn, code isn't working for me.

  • damn too late for the code maybe?

This code did not match any active gift card or discount. Was it entered correctly?

    • Same here. Was not able to apply the codes for the other day deals on their website too.

  • +1

great deal but I still have 4 bags from their other deals…

  • when do they roast them?

    • Roast date was 3 days before received.

    • Monday is usually the day for their retail roasts, although I'd suspect that they roast 5 days a week in their roastery in Port Melbourne (they supply St Ali and Sensory lab cafes australia-wide)

  • Having Steadfast now, really good coffee, works very well with my Breville.

    • Me too, just tapped into the Steadfast with my Breville this morning. Sipping now. Beautiful. But I prefer $25 per kilo where possible!

  • Any one can comment how does this compare to lavazza or ricotta beans, which we can get them for $15 per kilo when they are on special?

    • +4

Those beans are roasted much darker, and will taste akin to Blend 43/your local bakery's coffee. "Speciality Coffee" are sources coffees that rate >80/100 on a tasting scale, and are subsequently roasted much lighter, and therefore taste almost nothing alike.
The most important difference is taste - you can appreciate the taste profiles of both Lavazza and Sensory Lab coffee, but don't expect them to taste the same (a bit like goon and Penfolds Bin 32 - it's the tasting experience that differentiates the two)

    • +2

Any beans from a proper roaster will be miles above ones available from a supermarket. Brands like Illy are quality, but still suffer from sitting around on shelves for too long. Any Lavazza or Vittoria is on special because its a year old, and quite frankly crap to begin with anyway.

Mind you I think that buying 10x 250g packs almost defeats the purpose of 'boutique beans' if you're drinking it yourself. With ~15g being one coffee, 2 coffees a day works out to a week per pack. After a month the quality drops, but realistically I would say you can get ~2 months out of it after the roast date.

I would suggest dropping into your nearest cafe-roastery if you have one, where beans probably cost the same $30-40. Or if buying online get it from coffeesnobs.

OK but 5 star restaurants are still serving Nestle pod coffee because it tastes better.

        • +2

Perhaps they don't want to invest in a barista? Not a 5 star restaurant in that case or their food doesn't pair well with coffee, which is fine.

        • OK but 5 star restaurants are still serving Nestle pod coffee because it tastes better.

Do you have any proof of this "Tastes better" 'fact' you're trotting out? Coffee experiences are so subjective, with so many variables that no two experiences (or tastes, if you will) will ever be exactly the same. What Nespresso has cleverly done is invent a coffee delivery system that removes many of the variables around making a 'good' cup of coffee. It provides consistency and comfort in a drinkable package.

And so top restaurants buy into this, because if the last impression of a diner is 'my coffee was awful' due to a barista not making it how a diner is used to taking it, then the restaurant can suffer. Remove that variable and give diners what they know, and neither has very much to lose. McDonalds knows this too - They deliver consistency in their menu worldwide. People don't eat there because it tastes better than anything else - they just want what is familiar.

When you're effectively peddling a drug, users want consistency. They don't want something unfamiliar that may not work. That's no way to forming a habit.

        • Nobody goes to a 5 star restaurant for a coffee… You won't find any 5 star restaurant in a "best coffee in <city>" list.

Nespresso is rubbish, but will admit those pods for the commercial machines are surprisingly better than their home counterparts.

        • As the people above have mentioned, many restaurants have to balance the cost/benefit analysis when providing coffee in a menu that makes up such a small amount of revenue in the grand scheme of things.

        • +1

@a1ienz: I use nespresso pods at work because its miles better than Blend 43 crap and i cbf using Hario V60 at work

        • +1

          @Serapis:

Pull a 10 second extraction each from two of those puck pods, you will be surprised :)

        • @yojabbajabba: yeah good point, they would lose money on good coffee

Purchased! I got 2 of the $10 packs previously, but didn't pay much attention to which were the Steadfast beans - but our review of all 3 types was great!

I'm loving these sensory lab deals - we drink a LOT of coffee and these are the first beans I've ever seen on ozbargain worth buying.

  • any one want to share in Brisbane? 10 packs are too many

  • I will wait for Monday to get 10x 250gm of Steadfast. With code doubleup it will cost only $75 with free shipping for orders $50 or more. I can also get 2x 1kg of Steadfast on Monday with the same code for $50 with free shipping.

    • How do you get 2x1kg of Steadfast for $50?

Will a deal be released on Monday?

      • +1

Select the offer for Mon to Sat on their website or check their facebook offers.

        • I love you

  • Bought the 3 pack deal from last time; twice got lost in the post (not SL's fault - apparently logistics issue due to parcel locker) but each time SL was very helpful and responsive.
In the end they refunded me the money and sent me another lot! Very good service and very friendly.

As for the coffee, I have only used one pack so far (the brown one); very good and would defnitely use them again.

10 x 250g is too much for me so will give this a miss, but will surely buy something again.

  • Anyone able to ompare SL to Coffee Galleria in Silverwater? Is there a particular flavour you would compare this too? Only ever tried Coffee Galleria Coffee and it's pretty good! This is such a good deal though.

    • +1

I've looked around, the closest SL coffee to you would be Youeni Foodstore in Castle Hill as they use Sensory Lab coffee as their house blend. The best representation of these coffees is to have them in-store by trained baristas who can 'dial in' the coffee to bring out it's best :)

      • Thanks. May have to go sample the goods ;)

        • Or if you're really keen head to St Ali in Bondi Beach. Same roastery, different brand. I'd say you'll be the BEST representation of the Sensory Lab group coffee there.

  • +1

Meh.. Pointless deal IMO. Unless you're sharing it with multiple people. 10 bags will go off wayyyyyyyyy before you get to the last few.
I did grab the last 2 for $20 deal and I have to say I've been left unimpressed. Worth trying one @ $10 a bag but that's about it.

    • This is the reason why I haven't bought these myself - I won't get through them in a month! In one of the previous SL deals there were positive reviews/tips about freezing beans, but I'm still a bit hesitant to try it. I also have coffee coming of my ears regularly anyway due to these Ozbargain deals.
As for taste, I've brewed the previous espresso roast beans in plunger, espresso and aeropress and was happy with it

  • $88 for 2.5kg. Are these beans dipped in gold?
Can someone explain what's so good about these beans that makes them so expensive?

    • +2

$30-$35kg for freshly roasted coffee is pretty normal for boutique coffee.
What's crazy is when the full retail price is $17/250g bag, especially considering that the source coffee is most likely low-speciality grade and they would have paid ~$6-$10/kg green.

      • Fair enough. I'm always looking for new boutique beans.

        • +1

Try Manna Beans for variety :) they've just put up a deal.

        • +1

          @yojabbajabba:
Manna beans wasn't good. I don't recommend it. For someone that hasn't try it, it worth a go.

  • +1

both their blends (steadfast and seamless) were pretty average for filter, however their single origin from the last deal was quite nice.

    • Steadfast really did well in aeropress!
