NiMH & NiCd Smart Battery Charger $19.99 @ALDI Starts Saturday 17th December

300

This looks like yet another model with the same internals. The catalogue doesn't say much about it apart from what you can see in the link, so I am taking an educated guess, going off my last 2 posts - 11/05/16 and 15/05/15 that it has the same features.

Charges AA, AAA, C, D & 9V NiMH & NiCd Rechargeable Batteries (will charge Eneloops)

  • Percentage display of battery charge state.
  • USB port - easy charging of mobile devices.
  • Intelligent charge control.
  • Automatic discharge function of NiCd batteries.
  • Warning on defective or incorrectly inserted batteries.
  • Single-battery compartment monitoring.
  • Simultaneous charging of up to 8 batteries.
  • Capacity quick test using voltage analysis.
  • Automatic protection against overcharging AA, AAA, C and D.
  • Charging temperature control (automatic shutdown)
  • 1 Year Warranty

They also have Special Buy - Activ Energy LSD Rechargeable Batteries 2 pack C & D or 1 pack 9V for $7.99.

Aldi have everyday price - LSD Rechargeable Batteries 4 pack AA & AAA for $5.99.

Aldi have a 60 day satisfaction guarantee on Special Buys -
We will refund or replace any non-food specials within 60 days. Please provide your original receipt (or other proof of purchase), ideally with packaging

I haven't used these but a cheaper option to buying the C & D rechargeable batteries would be the AA adapters on Aliexpress for less than $1.00.
Please comment if you have used these.

  • Are Aldi's batteries rebadged eneloops?

    • +1

Don't think so, but their capacity is higher than the standard eneloops and just below or equal to the pro eneloops.
That said, eneloop don't have 9V LSD. Personally I prefer Aldi over eneloop because they are so much cheaper.

I bought a pack of AA and AAAs to try out, couldn't get near the rated capacity on any of them.
From memory the AA's averaged around 2000mAh, and the AAA's around 700mAh, so more like standard eneloops than pro. They've been sitting there since I bought them a few months ago, should check how they are holding their charge.

        • I bought some Aldi LSD AA and also am getting below rated capacity with a pack of 4 getting between 2150mAh & 2200mAh per cell.

IKEA LADDA is another great alternative to Eneloop. Japanese made cell as well.

I have the older model, which I really like - does 6 AA's at a time, and I found it charges more reliably than my old La Crosse charger (which seemed to always want to overcharge my eneloops).

    • Is the LaCrosse a 700 model? I seem to recall it documented they can be prone to that. Something to do with the lower output not triggering the termination.

    • Any idea of the charge rates per channel?

    • +2

Not a dupe. Battery charger is not in title.

Have had 4 of this chargers for ~1.5 years & I recommend them to all friends & family.

    • It's not the same charger. That said, I've been happy with the previous model. It charges very quickly, so hopefully this is equal

Th ALDI near me never seems to have rechargeable AA or AAA, only Alkaline.

  • How do you charge the 9v one?
The above charger cannot be used for 9v right?

    • There are 2 slots for 9V charging in the bottom corners.

      • +1

        ah.. missed that..
        thanks!

Warning - the Aldi C and D size batteries are only 3000mAh, so they're only a tiny bit higher capacity than AA batteries. When you pick them up they are also quite lightweight, perhaps they are just AA batteries in a thick cardboard tube.

It might actually be 2000mAh, it isn't easy to read the fine print on the paper catalog.

They do say "Ready to use" though, so they are low-self-discharge batteries.

Good spot.. That's really low, especially the D cells. The Tenergy and Imedion's are up at 8000 and 9500mAh.
The C's are not quite as bad, compared to 4000-5000mAh of other brands, that is if they live up to their rated capacity (which the AA and AAA's haven't as I mentioned up the page)

You're probably right though, the D's are probably repacked smaller batteries like these Energizers with Sub-C's inside.

  • Is this a "good" charger?

    • +2

If it's like the white one they sold a year ago, which also had the same number and type of battery slots, it's reasonable.

It will happily charge the batteries that my Maha C9000 rejects as "high" impedance, and the batteries that my Nitecore D4 gets confused by (continually re-starting the battery identification routine).

The display on last year's charger doesn't show battery capacity, only the "percent full" estimate in 10% steps. From the picture above, this charger looks to have the same display. The LED colour shows the charging status, steady green when charge complete.

I found the previous charger would occasionally say "charge complete" too early, so now I always take the batteries out and re-insert them again for a second charge cycle. If they were fully charged, the charger says "charge complete" again within a few minutes, so the charger must have dV/dT detection.

  • Bought the charger on the weekend and charged my Eneloops.
Besides having all the nice bells and whistles (discharge, individual charging slots, allows all types of common batteries, no over charging, smart detection etc), my biggest problem is that it charges standard AA at 1000mAh.

After an hour of charging I touched the batteries and they were VERY HOT. Existing eneloop charger, charges at 300mAh.

Reading other forums, this will compromise the life of the battery. I would have been happy at 500-600mAh but 1000mAH probably will kill the battery within a year (if you use it often).

On this fact alone, I'll be returning the charger :-(

    • Eneloops shouldn't have a problem charging at 0.5C (I think this is the recommended minimum for smart chargers. Anything lower can cause problems detecting when to terminate, well lower than 0.3C maybe)

How long does it take to charge a flat Eneloop? Should be a bit over 2 hours, and they'll be warm but not burning hot. Maybe just a faulty charger?

  • Do these have a fixed charge rate? i.e. AA always 1000mA?

I couldn't really tell from the box in store.

  • i bought the aldi superceded charger (white) and two packs of AA rechargeable to run my Pentax SLR…was a waste of money

    • Was it this one on the 21st of May 2016? What was the problem?

      • Yep, was the 21st May 2016…
The Low Shelf Discharge was the most disappointing, barely a day goes by and they have lost so much charge they are unusable. Amazing was they where 75% charged out of the pack.
IMO They get too hot while charging, the charge rate is too high.
Even when used fresh out of the charger they won't last long in a high draw device like my camera. I get maybe a dozen shots before the memory card stuffs up.

Hopefully the Japanese eneloops pro with the $100 nitecode charger will do a better job, but that's $140 which is 7 sets of ultimate's which then brings into play a 10A/H multi-voltage power bank for about the same price and much more versatile.

        • The charger and Aldi batteries have been great for me, but I don't use them in a high drain device.
At least you can return it easily as it's still under warranty.

        • @28Degrees: nah won't bother returning it, is prolly working fine for a $20 aldi item.

  • Now $14.99 at Aldi Fairfield West - around 10 left. Purchased 1 to save my Eneloops from the dumb and slow chargers they were exposed to.
