Sony Bravia 55" X9300 LED UHD 4K 3D Premium HDR - $1,949.98 @ Costco (Membership Required)

670

I went to Costco today and found out this deal. The price I believe is cheapest at the moment for the flagship and premium HDR 4k LED from SONY.

I checked quickly the other store and here is the list for comparison:

1 - JB HIFI: $2,998
https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/hd-televisio…

2 - The Good Guy: No Stock

3- Binglee: $2,700

    Good price!

It is interesting to note that Costco has mentioned on the last line "manufacturer's warranty: 1 year". Considering they have a satisfaction guarantee on everything you buy it is as if they are trying to get people to forget this fact on this TV. Has anybody else noticed this on any other TVs?

Technically speaking, if you buy anything (including an electrical item) and it breaks down (at any point during your continuous membership) you can take it back for a refund under their "satisfaction guarantee". Considering you wouldn't be happy any more with the item when it doesn't work you would get a refund. This is why I am curious as to Costco's reason for mentioning the manufacturer's warranty!

    • +3

This is not true. It is not at any point in your membership. This would be relevant today if you are an Australian member however if you buy a washer, use it for twenty years and it breaks down, they will most likely not honour a refund. When an item purchased has been used beyond its reasonable expected life then there will be no further warranties. There is no such thing as unlimited.

      • +1

Sure, but I never assumed "unlimited". To be clear I meant "Costco mentions manufacturer's warranty of 1 year but the TV breaks down after say 3 years" you just take it back and get a refund as it doesn't work any more. I certainly wouldn't do it after 10 or 20 years as I personally think that is unreasonable anyway (regardless of whether Costco would honour it or not).

A $2000 TV I would say should provide at least 5 years, no? Not the 1 year they have made very clear (which is the point of me posting and asking as it is unusual for them to focus on that when they provide a satisfaction guarantee that covers you for longer so the warranty is sort of irrelevant). It is the first time I have noticed Costco doing this.

        • Considering you can get extended warranties up to around five years for a tv I imagine that would be a reasonable period for Costco to honour a warranty. However if they say no I guess you couldn't do much about it.

Costco has changed their warranty policy as of recently. If an item bought from Costco requires repair or replacement you must bring up the issue with the manufacturer. They may then sign off on a refund by Costco (Costco requires a reference number from manufacturer before they will refund you) or they may offer to fix it. If they refuse to do either and do not comply, you can notify Costco and they will refund you and forego the aforementioned requirement of a reference number.

In the past if you had any issue, Costco would refund you and you could simply but the item again.

      • That's sucks
I recently returned a faulty lawn mover just after s yesr and there was a fair bit of discussion behind the counters about warranty
I didn't said anything but meant to ask if the policies have changed but they did a refund without saying no.

      • How do you know this? Is it written somewhere? I go there quite regularly so it is important to know please.

        • +1

Had a 12 month old and a week home theatre system break down on me. Panasonic were hell to deal with, offered me to drive unit there (in another state) or ship it at my expense. Then if the issue was found to be my fault I'd have to pay them to ship it back or lose the unit. They refused to authorise a refund so we went to Costco and told them the situation and how they responded. Costco were understanding and processed the refund.

If you ask Costco staff they'll notify you of the policy change.

      • +1

Signed up just to say this, that is actually illegal under Australian consumer law, and many companies have been given hefty fines in the past for such practices.

        See here: https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…

        • +1. If a retailer tries to stuff you around, stand your ground. Your statutory warranty is with the retailer. Not the manufacurer.

Where is Cosco? And how do I get a membership?

  • is this a new vegetable oil ?

  • Hey op have you seen the 65" version?

    • this

    • I didnt see any 65"

  • Rtings reviewer argues that the Samsung KS8000 is better, and a lot cheaper as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWhQJetyn4E
Is it worth the extra $$, plus the membership (not sure if the Costco membership is free or not)?

    • +3

This one has 3D which Samsung has not included in any their 4k tv. So it is up to your demand. If you dont need 3D, i think SS ks8000 will be better because you can get UHD Player for $98 after $200 giftcard JB.

    • A Costco membership is $60.

  • +5

For anyone wondering and a bit too lazy to Google, Costco memberships are $60 (individual) or $55 (business), per year that is. Well worth it if living nearby one with petrol station as both 91 and 98 are considerably cheaper 90% of the time (VIC).

  • +6

Damn thats a great deal for a 55 foot TV!

    • Haha I wish

  • -2

Off topic, just wondering if you costco members can tell me if they ever do deals on pepsi cans there. My mate said Woolies & Coles are better when on sale.

    • When Coles or Woolworths has them on sale, Costco's prices either match or slightly undercut.

    • Costco doesn't really have deals on cans cause they keep a low price on them. While Coles and Woolies are a little little bit better when half price.

      • Costco is always at a special price equivalent.. or you wait for Coles or Woolies to have them on special..

    • From memory, normal price of 24x375ml Pepsi at Costco is 11.89. Usually drops to 9.89 whenever Coles or Woolies has it on half price.

  • My x8500c screen died 10 days after warranty expired. You cant trust the quality anymore. They are repairing it but still you spend a fortune you a tv to last a while

    • +6

Do you realise that under Australian Consumer law a flat screen TV is expected to last 7 years…..I recently had a 5 year old TV repaired by LG….when the screen died on mine I called LG they said sry out side of Warranty I said under consumer law etc…. the fell over to help me and had my TV repaired in 5 days.

      • did they pickup the tv?

did you pay pickup and re-delivery fees?

        • They are doing in home repair. Replacing the led panel at home. Its yet to happen. Part has been ordered.

        • came round to the house and completed the repair there.

      • +1

Do you realise that under Australian Consumer law a flat screen TV is expected to last 7 years….

Utter and total rubbish, show us where the ACL says this? ….. Silence.

The ACL does not specify any lifetimes, it's all about how much you paid and the type of product as a more expensive TV is expected to last longer then a cheaper one. It also depends how much time you're prepared to put into it.

        • Not rubbish as I have a 5 year old 55" TV repaired free of charge…………yes it is all about cost and etc etc……..and As I stated when LG said it was out of Warranty and I mentioned ACL their tuned changed…….I got the information off another forum where other members had done just the same as me. If LG was under no obligation to replace my screen they wouldn't have. SO proof is in the pudding….My TV was purchased from WOW sight and Sound and they went bust a few months after I purchased the TV

        • The ACG doesn't give an explicit period, except to require a reasonable lifespan. However, there was a test case through the court recently that established 8 years as a reasonable lifespan for the TV on that occasion (although they factored in prior usage as a reduction in the refund), so I would say you could claim at least 5 years and closer to 8 for repair.

I thought Maveric-au was right. Where is your info from?

        • from Whirlpool from memory…..

    • Dude,

Was it a 1 yr warranty? As per below did you argue using ACL?

  • +1

In regards to the warranty, don't think anything's changed, quoted from http://www.costco.com.au/Common/PrivilegesAndConditions.shtm…

    Risk-Free 100% Satisfaction Guarantee

On Membership: We will refund your membership fee in full at any time if you are dissatisfied.
On Merchandise: We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell, and will refund your purchase price. This is in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

Not sure why they bothered mentioning the manufacturers warranty, maybe it was cut & pasted, lol.

    • You've summed up what I was trying to say in my first post. I agree.

  • Input lag is high for this tv if you want hdr output from the ps4 pro.

    • Yeah, it's 50-60ms from memory. Though, that's down from 90-100ms :p

    • i may wait for a deal for a sony tv for under 2k with very similar specs then.

    • It's fine for 99% of people.

Unless you're a competitive gamer, it's not an issue.

I have been there in Costco recently returning something and there was an elderly couple in the next counter who wanted to return an Ipad saying it was slow etc. They have been told to contact Apple and get a ticket number and come back so Costco will refund. The guy in the counter explained that he cannot take the ipad back without the Apple ticket number as if he does it Costco has to pocket out the cost. Where as with Apple ticket number Costco get the money back from Apple. Make sense. But if you really read their policy it invariably saying, Costco can wash their hands by just refunding your money for the membership and the item voiding any further obligations for the other products you bought from Costco and will not let you be a Costco member any further. From another source from Costco employee I have heard they have cancelled membership of few people due to unreasonable returns. I don't agree with Costco doing this. When Costco opened I have asked about extended warranty for 5 years for an item I purchased and they said as long as you have the membership you can return it. Again that was by the employee I spoke to and I dont know whether he is there any more or honor what he said.

    • +1

That is correct it is hit and miss depending on the person serving you, I haven't had issues returning items - bought the Apple charge cables in June and return them last week as one of them stopped working, refunded the money without issues. Though I have heard of similar stories where a customer wanted to return a faulty laptop because of similar issue, slow etc… and said the same thing to get an RMA from HP or have HP fix it up. But isn't the contract between the consumer and the place of purchase? In saying that I am now weary of buying big ticket items from costco… I have had good after sales service from the likes of appliances online though…

    • Realise, some people will chronically abuse Costco's extraordinarily generousness returns policy.

If you are genuine and reasonable you will likely have no problems. But those "bad apples" should most certainly be tossed out. (excuse the pun!)

  • +1

Whatever Costco says about the warranty period, and specifically about referring issues back to the manufacturer is totally irrelevant.

ACL trumps whatever Costco thinks, and as another poster posted above, ACCC HAS determined a 'fair life' for flat-screen TV's.

The details evade me, and I haven't got time to Google right now, but it may have been a case with Panasonic, and there's something in the back of my mind that recalls the company agreeing that either five or seven years was a 'fair thing'.

And just for those who haven't caught up on changes to ACL, warranty issues are 100% THE RETAILERS problem.

** YOU MAY CHOOSE ** to deal with the manufacturer IF YOU SO DESIRE, but it is the RETAILERS problem.

    • +1

Yes there are many posts in whirlpool where customers were successful in getting the manufacturer to fix the TV even though it was outside the 1 year warranty period.

    • ACCC HAS determined a 'fair life' for flat-screen TV's.

No they haven't, each case depends on things like the cost of the TV. A Panasonic is generally expected to last longer then a Palsonic for example.

  • I can confirm what cx9 wrote is true. Costco has become a lot harder to deal with returning faulty items or even unwanted unopened items. I still have my membership mainly for petrol only. I highly suggest anyone who joins only buy things they definitely will use (and not try and bring back if you don't like, as they used to encourage).

    • Yet another personal experience 2 weeks ago. Got an iced coffee from the Costco after shopping and it was bitter as hell. Went to the counter and said it is not normal and asked whether they can give me something else. The lady said it is Coffee and it is bitter and if I have tasted it, they cannot change it. I was pissed but I politely said it is not the first time I drink iced coffee in my life ( I got a Breville Oracle for my everyday use and a regular coffee drinker) and because it was $2.50 I was prepared to chuck it to the bin and walk away and another man walked in and asked why and replaced it with Mango Smoothie. We pay $60 for costco membership and unless Costco change this deteriorating experience they may not have a long way to go.

      • Holy hell surely this is a troll post.

  • +1

I called costo more than a month ago. Asking about Samsung 4k tvs. Then I asked about warranty and the girl told me that warranty is with Samsung. I then asked about being a costo member and if warranty covers it for a couple of years more while I am a member. She said it is what warranty Sony offers. I didn't ask further and decided not to drive there anymore. Waited for the ebay TGG 20%.

  • Does anyone know if other retailers (JB, HN etc) price match Costco?

    • +1

They won't. I went on the weekend to grab one, knowing Costco had it for $1950 and JB Hifi have done it a few weeks ago for $1998, and no retailer, at the time, were willing to go anywhere near it, best offer I had was GG for $2600. Nope.

  • Harvey Norman ($2395) and JB ($2398) have lowered their prices (probably due to the sony store xmas sale price of $2399.20), but still nowhere near as good as the costco price ($1949.98).
