Air India - Return Economy Class Airfares to Europe Departing Melbourne and Sydney from $900 - Available School Holidays

341

Cheap Airfares from Melbourne to some destinations in Europe. This is even more attractive as the fares are valid during school holidays.
e.g. Melbourne to Madrid Dep 03 April Ret 15 April $900. (International Transaction Fees for Credit Cards will Apply)
Or doing something like flying into Madrid and flying out of Paris will set you back approx. $1000.
You can try to do a multicity booking and stopover in Delhi for a few days. Price goes up a bit, but probably worth it.
Similarly these fares are also available during the winter school holidays.

Nice. Can you do a stop over in Delhi?

    • Yes you can. Use the multi city option when booking. I understand that free hotel is only if transiting.

  • fyi, you might need a transit visa to transit through india

Please check. I believe it is visa on arrival for Aussies now.

You need to apply for a tourist visa if you are staying under 30dayS in india, visa process takes about 4days, you need to have this pre approved evisa, NO VISA ON ARRIVAL

For easy visa just supply copy of passport,a photo etc, cost a little more than usual

        Less fees but more documents

If you are booking, your credit card provider may initially decline the transaction. So you may have to spend some time having it authorised.

  • Thanks for sharing. Great find!

  • The problem with Air India is you can not earn points on any other Frequent Flyer program even though they are a member of Star Alliance…

    • Not sure how It works exactly, but I was able to enter my KrisFlyer no when booking.

      • I was able to enter the same as well but it didn't accrue any points last time I traveled…I have been chasing KF and AI ever since but no luck.

  • Air India have a frequent flyer program called flying returns, though seems like setting it up is like opening a bank account due to documentation required. Also most of the discounted fares do not provide full mileage accrual. Main attraction here is cheap fares during holidays.

No visa required if Maximum stay less than 24 hours. Plus free accommodation if transit time over 8 hrs.

    From website :-
"Free hotel accommodation provided on the outbound journey at Delhi Airport Airside hotel (http://www.newdelhiairport.in/airport-hotel.aspxExternal website that opens in a new window) for passengers travelling from Australia to London/Birmingham/Paris/Frankfurt/Rome/Milan/Vienna provided a single ticket is issued for the entire journey and the transit time in Delhi is between 8-24 hours. Indian visa not required for passengers transiting in Delhi and continue their journey to Europe within 24 hours."

  • How is the experience on Air India? (Any feedback or personal views?) I know that for this price you can't complain, but in terms of service and seating?

    • Aircraft flying out of Melbourne is Dreamliner. Same for Delhi to Paris. More info is on website. Not sure about service, but surely they cannot be below average.

It's the National Indian carrier but most Indians with a bit of $$$$ will usually avoid it. It's a Government of India enterprise, which means you might find service won't be up to scratch. But if the $$ works for you, I guess just take a sleeping pill, wake up when you reach your destination. Just be aware it's a bloody long flight to Delhi!. I'm easy going and flights service etc. don't bother me too much. However if my missus is travelling with me, there's ZERO chance of us booking Air India no matter the price.

Upvoting it because it is a good deal.

Absolute worst Airline I've ever flown on. The plane was filthy. Yes it's a Dreamliner which can only make the plane a few years old, but there were food stains everywhere. The flight attendants were rude, and at times racist. On the return journey someone had sat in my reserved seat, and the flight attendant told me to sit down.
Delhi airport was confusing, and Air India ground staff weren't interested in helping at any point.
When I complained about it all after I got told via email to 'just calm down and get over it'.
I've flown on some cheapo airlines and this was by far the worst. Never again.

    • Expect delays and don't expect customer service or compensation. I would never fly AI even if free.

    • It is a Govt. owned and operated Airline and I would not trust the current Hindu Nationalist Govt. with their Nazi views….
They may forcefully play National Anthem before the flight departs and any person that doesn't stand up during the Anthem would be arrested on arrival at New Delhi…lol….
Look at this if you think it is a joke : http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-38298821

Staff in-flight service is below average similar to Thai Airways. Average food quality. Average airport for long stay over in Delhi.

Good airport lounge in New Delhi. Check if credit card will cover it.

  • Is this scary like flying china southern ? Ie people spitting and all that ?

    And any particular scent onboard?
We know they love curries and spicy food, and it can translate to a particular body scent which certain people have aversion to.
    Yoi know what I mean.

    • Yes, a journey of curries and sweat for sure.

    • you'll never ever know if you never ever go !! could take some aromatherapy oils with you, if they allow…

I don't want to sound racist or something (that's why I got the negative votes). I'm asking about a realistic practical question.

      • +2

If you have to say "I don't want to sound racist, but…" - you sound racist.

Not as bad as a bogan dont worry.

  • Air India Review Delhi-Sydney-Melbourne Route

  • Good deal, but this is one airline that I will never fly on their international routes. Their pilots enjoyed (not sure now) holding strikes quite often, as for service, wow..i'll leave it at that.

  • Am originally from India. Even when I was a student in the US I never flew this. Please do not. Its one of the worst airlines.

    • +1

Thnx for input. If you have never flown it how do you know it is the worst?

      • It just has a bad rep. Its run by the government and corruption and nepotism runs rampant….Very inefficient and I hear the service is poor too.
In the past I have heard friends say the odd good thing about it but the general perception is negative. Of course please do your research. It could have improved but I do not think i will ever fly in it unless there is an absolute emergency.

Someday India needs to privatise it and run it professionally…Then Air India could have some hope!
