Just a heads up there's been recent issues with the phone bricking (crashing and not being able to turn back on/'bootloading'). My Nexus 5x has been working well since the beginning of this year but apparently a lot of people have this problem (see: https://www.reddit.com/r/nexus5x/).

    • +4

Seconded. Mine boot looped a year to the day after I got mine.

      • +1

        R.I.P. irishjoe's 5x :'(

        • She was a damn good phone for the year I had her. :(

      • +9

You'd think after 3 phones (G3, G4 now the 5X, at least) LG would have figured this out by now.

        • Don't forget the V10 as well…

        • @18:

V20 doing it now as well apparently

          @knowskillz:

So glad I didn't get one then. I had a G4 that did it immediately. They tried to deny it was an issue. Took forever to get a refund. I didn't realize they were still doing it so will probably just completely write off LG from now on.

No, each phone (5x, G3, G4 etc, etc) is different so of course there will be issues sometimes.

My 5x has had no problems.

        • +1

@Barry Beetroot: Same issue, multiple phones. Coincidence? Hardly.

        • I have a G4, and it recently got the boot loop error. Its now a brick.

          @ProspectiveDarkness:

Phones are not an exact replica of other phones no matter what the brand, make, model. There is always the possibility of ongoing problems and it can take quite some time before its been ironed out.

Unfortunately, we are the ones that are the real guinea pigs but most times, we end up with a trouble free phone.

        • @Barry Beetroot: Did you update to 7.1.1?

        • @angre:

I've had 7.1.1 for sometime already. I'm on the beta rollouts

        • +2

@Barry Beetroot: Obviously, yes but we're talking about a series of phones from the same manufacturer, with the same software and hardware designers and the same manufacturing plants and manufacturing processes consistently displaying the same fault that most other phones do not. Again, hardly a coincidence.

        • +1

          @Barry Beetroot:
They aren't exact replicas, but usually manufacturers don't change internal designs all that much, a lot of the same components are used in different phones.
I guess the biggest problem with LG bootloop is that no one knows what's going wrong, not even LG themselves. I guess the only way around is to avoid buying.

        • Majority of the bootloops I think are to do with battery. Happened on my Dad's G3 and stopped bootlooping when I stuck it into a USB battery. I replaced it with a genuine battery and stopped bootlooping. Cant do much about the Nexus though since its non-removable batteries.

        • @ProspectiveDarkness:

Yeh look, going back to your initial thoughts… "You'd think after 3 phones…. LG would have figured this out by now." On one hand I have sympathy with these guys as on occasions no matter what you try and no matter what variations you apply, it just doesnt seem to be working. Persistence mostly works, but sometimes it takes ages and at our expense and frustration.

No doubt they are losing sales, (not sure how bad it actually is??) but i've seen quite a few posts on it.

Nexus 5X Problems section states that LG are offering full refunds for boot loop issue because they are no longer manufacturing the motherboards.

I bought mine from Telstra so they are sending a replacement. No idea if its going to be a refurbished unit or a brand new one. If its a refurbished, its going straight on ebay.

Does that LG refund apply worldwide or just USA? Was reading reddit and it sounds like they are all american.

        • Hi irishjoe - can't say for sure but I was in a similar situation to you. My 5X from Telstra went into bootloop failmode at exactly one year and 3 days after I got it. Telstra replaced it with a brand new device which was a bit of surprise as I was wondering how a refund would work given I have the phone through a plan. Maybe because mine is the 'ice' (green) colour they had plenty in stock? Not sure.

        • @troy1976: How did you know it was a brand new device rather than a refurbished unit?
          I'm picking mine up tonight.

        • @irishjoe:

I think the paperwork that came back with it said it was brand new and it also had all the weird little plastic bits stuck on it that had to be peeled off (as in not just over the screen but around all the edges and so forth like it had when I first got it). It was also meticulously clean and without a single mark of any sort (believe me I checked) so I'm willing to believe it was brand new.

        • @troy1976: So does that mean we have a full years warranty on it then?
I am just a bit concerned about getting a new 5x and it boot looping and Telstra saying tough luck, try LG.

        • @irishjoe:

Yeah good question - I just assumed it renewed for another year (because it read and seemed like a brand new phone) - probably was just too keen to get back to using a 5X to think or ask about it.

Now that I think about it (prompted by you) I can only assume there's a really good chance this new one will die in around 12 months too…

        • @troy1976: I'll see if I can get something in writing how long the warranty is if it boot loops within a year when I pick mine up.

        • Got a new device. The guy said as its new, the warranty starts from today and lasts 1-2 years depending on how long it is in Oz.

I got shit scared about this and wrote down my Steam recovery code again
      mfw

    • I had the boot looping problem just a few months after getting the phone. The good news is that the Australian distributor actually has a really quick turn around time with replacing handsets. I returned mine in store on a Thursday night, and had a replacement by Tuesday lunch time.

      • +1

Don't count on this. My experience with an LG G4 bought at JB HiFi was a complete nightmare and took weeks.

        • They initially started telling me that phone repairs had a several week turn around time, but then when they saw it was a 5X, they said that they're distributed through some other group (not LG) and the turn around time for them was 5 business days. So for some reason, 5Xs get treated differently and, subsequently, much better than most other phones when it comes to repairs (at least, this was my experience several months ago).

Updates for Nexus 5X may stop in September 2017. Security updates will continue for a little longer.

…and the Nexus program's got the axe too.
iPhone's are looking better and better everyday.
      Well, almost.

I was considering getting one as my LG G4, which 'bootlooped' about 6 months ago, is now dropping calls all over the place. After some research I think I will be getting an Oppo F1s instead.

    • Dropping calls as in? Does it restart after you get a call or just normal call drop? I faced similar issue a while back.

      • +1

In the middle of calls it just seemed to be terminating the connection. There would be a small 'beep' then it hung up. It was annoying as the person I was trying to have an important conversation with had to call me back 3 times. Also I rebooted and then checked my voicemail and that would work for about 30 secs before hanging up as well, without me having touched anything. It seems better today as I had 2 long calls without this issue occurring, but this phone is on it's final warning to behave :)

        • Oh for me it was different issue then. My phone used to switch off immediately after making or receiving a call. Turns out it was battery problem. Replacing battery fixed it.

      16GB model

Great price, but unfortunately, not the same model. Officeworks is 32Gb, AllPhones is 16Gb.

    • Copy that, thanks. I should have checked. That certainly explains the price difference.

  • Thanks op. Got one from Capalaba Officeworks. Didn't get the chance to see if there were any extras. shame I didn't know about the Allphones $348 deal. Still probably worth it for the extra memory.my wife would have preferred a white one though. Oh well. Seems like the kind of phone you want 2yrs warranty with.

  • Anyone thats buying Purchase it with Amex Card for Screen Repair Protection Cover

  • Haha got it for 300NZD brand new from Noel Leeming =)

  • Anyone have any experience with tough cases for this phone? My work iPhone has come with otter boxes or life proof and they have been great. But none seem to be available for this phone.

    • +1

I wanted solid protection, like you say not many choices for this phone, so I got an official Nexus bumper case. It has good protection with high edges to protect screen if you drop face down. Not a full enclosure though like Otterboxes. This ebay seller has it for $10 which is very good price, I paid $25 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Genuine-Official-Google-Bumper-Ha…
