    This is great!!

    • +1

if you didn't have account with Telstra, or had trouble ordering online before, then beware. Few people got caught up with their ID verification system which required you to bring your ID instore to get the order through.

      • +9

No ID required here, great for porting.

        • No ID? It's asking for Drivers License to order one.

Edit: Nvermind, for some reason it changed to a different form, and it doesnt require one.

        • +7

No ID to submit the request, but you need ID to activiate it.

        • @onesimpleclik:

If you don't let the page fully load, it takes you to different page and charges you

        • @garratt torlesse:
Of course, due to the geniuses in charge, you don't have to actually show the ID. So you can use anyone's.

Using a physical drivers license card as ID makes sense, because they have photos and anti-forgery features.
But using a license number as ID is stupid beyond belief. Its not a secret.

All it does is make it easier for the gov't agencies to spy on people honest enough to give real ID. (or really dumb crims)

      • +4

I'm afraid this is nothing to do with Telstra, believe it or not they'd rather not have you pointlessly running around doing pointless, idiotic stuff like showing identification because it makes it less likely you'll use their service and more likely we'll have comments like this.

Nope, it's duh gummints making your life difficult due to the fact that they're spying on you. I've had it happen with Vodafone and it's a joke, lose phone service for 5 days and all that's happened is the same person used the same id to make the same account as any other time.

Duh gummints are a bunch of jerkoffs.

        • it can happen for whatever their reason, not because using multiple accounts or anything like that. Last time they had the $30 sim on sale with $10 cashback with cashrewards, I made multiple order on their website and all gone through, my friend on the other hand, got an email to call them back, and had to go to their store to present ID, and then after that they might proceed with the order. She never dealt with Telstra billing before. Quite a lot of people got caught up here.

        • @lgacb08: Oh right ignore what i was saying as i was referring to activating the sim.

      • ID happens when you activate one of these SIM starter kits. Just buying one doesn't require ID to be supplied. The only reason you would need to supply ID upfront for example is if you are buying a mobile phone on a post paid contract plan.

      • This may help for activation:

        Telstra thinks my name is
        Given name: "First Middle"
        Surname: "Surname"
(ie literally as written on driver's license)

I hope that helps some of you activate online :)

    • +2

This also means free Telstra Air!

  • +1

(Must be 10 digits and the same number that received the SMS)

    Is this targeted?

    • +1

Not targeted…any current mobile will work.

      • You can submit it, but will you receive it?

This looks like the free phone prior to the 2G shutdown, where they actually note and check the number.

    • Not Targated. no code reguired.

  • +3

    not a big deal

    its free.

This is going to be the BIGGEST DEAL EVER!!!

      • +13

        Do you even port?

        • Hello there what is porting and how is it useful. Sorry I am not aware of porting.

        • +1

@Dpkmax: Porting just refers to the process of transferring your mobile number from one provider to another.

  • Thanks OP, got one!

  • +11

Just in case they have a meltdown again and offer a free day of data to everyone haha :P

  • +1

Can these be used for Telstra Thanks movie tickets without activating a service?

    • You need to organise activate, but you don't need to use the number. I did this to get access to telstra thanks.

      • +1

How do you activate it without a plan?
How long does it last for?

        • +1

I activated a prepaid sim and simply didn't recharge. I believe it works indefinitely unless telstra cancel my account for some reason. I am not the first to do this.

        • @edshays: Thanks. I guess mine stopped working because I was SIM jumping with my main number and ported out after a month.

  • +8

If anyone's looking for a top-notch deal.. Dodo offers free sims if you sign up to one of their plans. Only $24.90 postage and handling. I confirmed it on their chat. $24.90 P&H. For a sim card.

    • +1

Post it as a deal, sure sounds like a front page deal

    • Mobile 4G lite isn't a bad deal for 2GB at $17.90. More useful for me than Vaya's deal for 10 cents more.

      And "only" $24.95 P&H.

    • +2

Dodo is ridiculous. So glad I left them for mobile and home internet. They need to be liquidated, worst company I've ever dealt with in my life.

      • Can't agree more. I was told that my iPhone 4s will not be able to make International calls as it did not have the international calling feature.

  • +7

I know I'm late to the party here… can someone explain the benefit of a new free SIM with (seemingly) no credit? I believe there is some jiggery pokery you can do with transferring credit/numbers between SIMs, but I'm not sure what it's all about.

    • +8

Look in to CM2U if you already have a Telstra pre-paid service.

Otherwise it's good to have an extra number for Uber, Guzman-Y-Gomez and other signup deals.

      • +3

Stack it with the ubereats code at the moment, $30 of free food.

        • Sorry, quick question, what code can you stack with ubereats? I thought they dont allow stacking unless its referral credit. thanks!

      • Does the free burrito from Guzman-Y-Gomez still works with new signup, l tried it the other day but nothing received??

        • Not sure. I haven't done it recently.

      • Don't you have to keep topping up a pre-paid service to keep it active and receive calls?

        • +2

          For Telstra every 6 months.

      • Would you have to activate the sim card in order to do anything?

        • Yes. As the additional number will allow you to receive SMS.

        • yes, not able to do illegal activities that you asked how to on another post.

  • Is it OK for me to give them a random mobile number when filling out the order details?

    • +2

That's up to you I guess.

      • I mean do they send a confirmation SMS or anything before processing the order?

        EDIT: No, apparently not.

  • +6

OP you should add that having an account with Telstra gives access to Telstra Air until 27 March 2017.

    • Done :). i saw that but was in hurry to go for Groceries. updated now

    • Do they inactivate the account like Optus goes after a few months?

      • +4

        After 12 months without activation

      • +2

After 6 months without any credit it gets deactivated and there is no way to get it back online. I've been through this scenario before.

  • Thanks op

  • Would this give access to the free AFL / NRL live pass like this year if they do it again?

    • No. 2016 it was only for PrePaid Plus customers that recharged $30 or more every "month".

    • Possibly.. your AFL account is not linked to your sim. I have changed in and out of Telstra several times and my AFL live account still works (without data charges) as long as it is a Telstra sim. So your current 2016 AFL live pass will still be active.

  • how do you even know if your order was successful? All you get in a "thanks for your order screen" but no email notice…

    • +3

      Wait.

    • +3

how do you even know if your order was successful? All you get in a "thanks for your order screen" but no email notice…

Wait for the postman to deliver a package from Telstra.

  • Ordered one, thanks OP.

  • Hope the $30 uber eats referral is still going by the time this arrives…

  • +1

    Great.
Saved me $2. Was seriously procrastinating getting one today as I needed it to purchase Telstra movie tickets to see Star Wars: Rougue One.

  • -2

I must be from another planet! Why is a $2 sim that exciting?

  • +3

Forgive me for my ignorance but why do Ozbarginers often post/get excited by cheap/free SIM card packs?

Do you not have to sign up/port existing phone number?
Is the hassle worth the seemingly minor savings?

Genuinely curious would love an explanation 😊

    • Is the hassle the seemingly minor savings?

The hassle is 5 minutes on the internet filling out a form (granted duh gummint pointlessly knocks back my ID from time to time because obviously after doing the same thing again and again then doijng it again might mean I'm a terrist obviouslys).

I spend 50% or less on communications than you if we're just comparing the face value of SIM starter kits which I always use, never recharge.

The company I choose to use is based on who is cheapest at the time whereas you are stuck paying the same rates. I think atm I'm on 12.5GB, 120 mins calls for 28 days $14.99 plus hassle.

  • Kogan SIM cards are always free. What's so special about this deal?

    • +3

Access to Telstra Air and Telstra Thanks, and the SIM usually costs $2.

    • +2

You'd have to pay to activate Kogan SIMs.

    • +1

now you have to recharge to activate your kogan sim

  • Do you get a choice of either a standard, micro or nano SIM card?

    • +2

No option provided. I think sims come with two outer layers of plastic which you can remove as needed to get from Standard to micro, then down to Nano

  • I know very little about prepaid but last time I bought a Telstra sim it came with $30 or so credit - does this $2 sim come with any credit? I'm looking for the cheapest disposable sim for my relatives who'll be in Sydney for just over a month (they won't call much and using less than 1GB of data).

    • +4

No credit here. A good option for your relatives might be a $30 Optus SIM discounted to $10 at Coles at the moment. Plenty of data and calls, but only 28 days.

      • +1

Definitely get this and activate on the new number which comes with it.

  • I just ordered this free sim, but was charged $2. What a stitch up.

  • +5

I just received 3/5 that I ordered for my family. The postman required my ID to sign for them. One of them was even a $10 starter pack (probably picked by mistake or they temporarily ran out of $2 SIMs).

  • +10

Received mine today…in a 3KG startrack bag lol.

  • +1

Ordered on 18th, waited, received tracking link on 20th… And waited…

I'm in Brisbane, about 10km from Airport.

Contacted chat - mistake their end, very sorry, but nothing they can do except give me a refund😯
    I laughed so much😀
But glad it wasn't an order for expensive tech!

Ordered again with different details. I wonder where this one will end up?

  • I couldn't even pick mine up because apparently it had a different licence ID even though I never entered those details. Anyone had the same stupid problem?

    • +2

I had the same problem. On the package the "ID" showed the last 4 digits of my phone number, and the courier didnt release the package to me.

A bit stupid, even though the name and address match with my drivers license…idiot couriers.

      • Yep same happened to me, I just told him it was a free Sim card and I didn't even put any ID in and he said eh and gave it to me haha

      • Same here.

    • happened the same to me… looking for a way to get in touch with them and ask to resend.

  • Thankyou OP

  • +1

They sent this through a courier

  • +1

Not worth the 1 HR wait at Australia Post!

  • i received mine today.i got a $30 prepaid kit for tablets.

  • Requested the SIM. See how long it takes to get to me!

    • Got it this morning via courier! Great service so far…

Having problems with Boost. Unable to text after being ported across from Virgin. Thinking porting across to Telstra as my Boost experience has been painful!

  • received today

    • have you notice the documents that come with it, the part that says "what happens if you don't activate?" ?

      • If you read it closely, I don't think it applies to prepaid SIMs

  • So I wasn't asked for any ID, just my name, address and mobile number (which I fudged a bit). What decides the limitation per person? How many are sent to one address? Or is there something in the activation process that will limit this (giving ID etc)?
