Telstra Prepaid Mobile Broadband Double Data Recharge - $150 for 40GB - 1 Year Expiry

220

Telstra must be trying to compete with Optus' double data offer by offering double data on their recharges too.

$30 - 6GB - 30 day expiry.
$60 - 12GB - 90 day expiry.
$90 - 20GB - 6 month expiry (185 days according to their site)
$150 - 40GB - 1 year expiry.

Ends 13 February 2017.

Good for if you require Telstra coverage. Otherwise Optus or Vodafone is cheaper cost per GB.

Optus is $130 for 44gig with 2 year old expiry.

    Far from trying to compete.

    • Nice catch!

I'd guess they wouldn't offer their own double data deal if Optus weren't at least luring some of customers away for a maximum 2 year period with long life data.

    • … "trying" being the operative word here…

Typo in tittle, should be "$150 for 40GB"

Thanks, fixed. Posted from my mobile in bed haha.

      • I was looking at it yesterday for my $349 ipad air, but didn't post, so good on you for posting!

  • But if you paid an extra $150/year what would that get on top of your current mobile plan? The Kogan 8GB unlimited plan comes to mind at around $280/year.

Just take care, this seems to only apply to those on the Telstra Pre-Paid Data Pass II and NOT the Telstra Pre-Paid Mobile Broadband Data Pass. If you switch from one to the other your current data does not transfer. The Telstra Pre-Paid Mobile Broadband Data Pass I use still comes up as $140 for 16G.

I have been caught by this type of issue before with Telstra.

I was going to switch to Optus when their double data deal came out but my tests with their 4G dongle at the location I needed to use it at showed their 3G/4G data speed was very low compared to Telstra at the same site. The Optus 4G speed when used at home is great but I don't need it here (except during blackouts anyway). It pays to check before forking out the money!

    • what's the difference between the 2?

      • I don't know yet (apart from the deal on the newer one). I didn't know there was a Data Pass II until I looked into this deal to see if it applied to my 4G dongle.

      • From memory, on the older offer there was a 2-year expiry recharge option.
On the Data Pass II the maximum expiry is 1 year

Telstra - $3.75 per GB over 12 months
Optus - $2.95 per GB over 24 months
    Vodafone - $1.56 per GB over 6 months (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/282254)

  • There is no recharge credit awarded on Data Pass II which means no Google Play purchases and no CM2U.

  • Vodafone also has 16gb 180 day expiry for $25.

  • So the $50 for 5(10?)Gb 365 day plan is gone?

    • That was on Data Pass I. This is Data Pass II.

      • can you still recharge to roll over data on Data Pass 1?

        • Yes. If you are on Data Pass I the you can stay on it and continue to recharge and roll over the data.

  • Where is the $50 1 year pack?

    • Looks like it's no longer an option on new plans.

      • I'd better stay on the old plan then…

  • their $150 MBB recharge used to be valid for 2 years ! Now it's only 1yr

  • Hi all family looking as cutting phone line, going wireless data pack/dongle….recharge/prepaid with Telstra.
Can they keep their Bigpond email address?
They are away more than at home!

So do you stick the dongle in back of router to wifi the house?

    • "So do you stick the dongle in back of router to wifi the house?" You can if it's a USB one and you have a modem that allows it OR you just get a Wireless dongle which is much more useful and portable. The data costs are pretty high though.

  • can anyone advise if the telstra 40gb for $150 over 365 days whether there are any T&C's i should be aware of (if bought pre feb 17) I mainly want to use a new to me netgear 810 air card aka telstra advanced III and maximise speed as no NBN in my area and have a new HP g1 8gb M5 chromebook on way !

i checked telstra's 'critical information summary' but that have nuthin in it.

questions I'm concerned about is do u have to use data in any time period ? do they limit data speed as i want the 4gx solution or does the bonus run out in a month etc ?

also what are offers like OVO like ? this seems for fastest and largest data available for a decent price… ?

thx again OZ'bers…. (anyone with a air card 810 aka advanced iii 4gx modem would love any tips u have too…)

    • This isn't a speed limited service, you will get whatever speeds are available in your local area and with a compatible device.
The 1 year expiry is exactly that, you have 40GB to use however you want within that 365 day period, beginning from when you recharge.

If you're comparing to OVO (which uses Optus), they only have 15GB for $99.95 with 1 year expiry, in which case you'd be better off going with the current Optus offer which is half the price at $50 for 14GB to use in 1 year.

      Optus - 14GB - $50 - 1 Year
      OVO - 15GB - $99.95 - 1 Year
      Telstra - 20GB - $90 - 6 Months
      Telstra - 40GB - $150 - 1 Year
      Optus - 44GB - $130 - 2 Years

The real question you have to ask is, how much data do you use and what towers are in your area?

If you chew through your data and use the whole Optus 44GB within a month which isn't hard to do for some people, then you're better off getting the shorter expiry data sims because they're better value for cost per GB (at the expense of expiry).

      Jeenee - 50GB - $59 per month ($54 for first 3 months)
      Jeenee - 70GB - $79 per month
      Optus - 50GB - $70 per month
      OVO - 50GB - $79.95 per month

      • appreciate the insights :)
