Is this real? Buy 500 Star points for as little as $17.50 USD, minimum buy 5000 points. ie $175 USD.
That's before the discount. After discount applied at max 50% then it's $87.5 for 5000 points. I wouldn't trust this person especially when doing family transfer

Agreed not spectacular but it represents a deal for many.
You are not going to get a better buy rate than this from SPG/Marriott and the OP has posted this despite it only being of interest to a small group of people who have clear plans on what they want to do with the points (often transfer to airlines for business class seats).
A note to others; if you login and the discount is not 50% (like 30 or 25% instead) it can change day by day (most annoying). You can try the next day or hour and it may change or contact SPG support saying you saw 50% and it has changed and they may honour it for you.
