  • Wonder how Bosston brand TV is like. It could be like junk for all you know.

    • +3

Its almost guaranteed to be junk, but its cheap I guess. I would rather an Aldi TV.

        • +2

So good that Bosston Audio Visual doesn't even seem to have a web site. Looks like a noname Chinese made generic TV with a name slapped on it in the likes of those Dick Smith TVs which used to be sold.

        • +12

@hollykryten: Are you sure? I think it's made in Masssachussettss.

        • +1

          @McFly:

          LOL yeah sure.

        • +1

@McFly: Let Make In Merica Again

        • +1

actually sounds like a trash brand

      • -1

Viano at aldi was a better deal to experiment with these cheap TVs

        • +1

Aldi only sell Bauhn or Medion. Viano was BigW

        • +2

@altomic: Made a mess of my comment there :( but definitely both of those were better deals with physical stores to return to

  • +12

Bauhn ATVUHD55-1216 55" UHD $499 @ ALDI seems like a much better choice for the sake of $18 more, comes with 60 day satisfaction guarantee and physical store in case of warranty issues.

I also dare say a better TV, very happy with mine and have read some good things for others, this COTD TV seems like a huge gamble for a no name brand with no reviews.

    • -1

Does it play .h265 files via USB please? Like it would have killed ALDI to put on the box which file formats it plays.

      • +1

I didn't have any .h265 files, but I downloaded Tears of Steele from here and put it on a USB 2.0, plugged it into tv and the file played fine. Hope that helps.

        • -1

          Very much appreciated!

    • +1

      You're trying too hard dude

      • -4

Just bought 2 of these TV's free delivery as a catch member pretty happy. Hope they work well!!!

        • +1

almost guarantee the sound on this tv will be pure shite. may need to invest in a decent sound bar.

        • @Gavman: most low end TV's have crap sound. a set of logitec 2.1 computer speakers fixes that.

        • -1

          @Gavman:

almost guarantee the sound on this tv will be pure shite

ALL modern TVs that have thin bezels have shite sound. That is because the speakers fire backwards. The thinner the TV, the worse the sound.

may need to invest in a decent sound bar

Too ugly and expensive. And you just end up with "TV Quality" sound anyway.

Just invest in a small set of 2.1 Powered (PC) speakers. Cheaper, smaller, and sound better than any soundbar of the same price.

Aldi has a return policy, COTD does not.

      • -2

        Total and uttter nonsense.

        • Except its true, don't spread lies.

        • -3

@samfisher5986: It is not true and never will be. They are required by Australian law to have a process for the return of items that do not meet customer satisfaction. Just because you have some sort of previous beef with them does not give you the right to maliciously spread false and utter lies.

For others reading this persons comments please ignore them as they are outright rubbish.

          Returns policy: https://m.catchoftheday.com.au/terms#section-17

        • +1

          @northernculture:

Thats a return policy if its faulty, not if the TV is junk.

Aldi has a return policy for that, COTD does not.

        • -1

@samfisher5986: You said it didn't have a returns policy, which it does. You were wrong and that has been appropriately corrected. Cotd has a returns policy. In future make tour comments clear please.

        • @northernculture:

COTD has a faulty return policy, not a general returns policy.

COTD products and service sucks, you need to face facts.

        • -3

@samfisher5986: you said cotd doesn't have a returns policy, you were wrong and were corrected, they do have a returns policy. Again please make your comments clear in future.

        • @northernculture:

COTD doesn't even have a policy.

Australian Law has a policy. COTD has nothing to do with it.

        • -2

@samfisher5986: cotd are required by law to comply with consumer protection legislation.

And yes, they have a returns policy.

        • @northernculture:

If the are required by law to comply, they are not the ones with the policy.

          Nice try…

        • -2

@samfisher5986: You said they didn't have a return policy. They do.

          You were summarily corrected.

Is there anything else you want to add?

        • @northernculture:

Australian Law has the return policy, they don't have a choice, you are implying they do.

          Don't spread false information.

        • @samfisher5986: COTD are required under Australian consumer law to allow consumers to return faulty goods etc.

You implied COTD will not do this.

This is malicious, false and outright lies. Probably because you had some sort of bad dealing with them in the past. Most likely the consumers fault, and not COTD.

So please do not spread, by implication or otherwise, outright lies.

        • -1

          @northernculture:

I never said COTD does not follow the law, let me know where I said that.

        • @northernculture & samfisher5986

Let's leave it at that please, this issue was resolved many comments ago.

      • +1

Aldi has a change of mind policy, COTD does not.

        • -2

And nor do they need to.

        • -1

          Whoever neg'ed me wins the 2016 I neg'ed a 100℅ factual post award - well done!

  • +14

Rep OP you seem to really love COTD…

  • I was getting ready to buy this TV but then I saw that it only has a one year warrantee. Most TVs blow up within the year after the 1 yr warrantee has expired. Kogan's TVs have an option to buy a 3 YR or 5 YR warrantee. Their 55 inch TV is currently $479.

    • Most TV's should last 10 years or so unless you are unlucky.

    • or just buy a decent brand TV for the extra couple hundred more with a 3 yr standard warrantee (Hisense) and an extra year for free on the Ccard.

      • Brought one of the Target Platinum $599 delivered. Of course sound is not good, but this is standard with all big screens. We spent last night trying out on youtube 4K videos. Saw nothing wrong with picture, very live like. That is all we want.

For the price we are very happy, the 3 year warranty is good.

Does anyone knows the service menu for these?

  • +3

I think Big W are trusted, they had a 55" 4k TV about two weeks ago for $419.

    • +1

The Ex grabbed one of the big w ones a couple of days ago and for 420$ it's not bad at all.

      • I went the layby option, it's crazy how cheap these are at the moment.

  • Well it's using a Samsung panel which is one of the leaders in the TV industry right now so I'd give it a little more credit than Aldi ones.

    • Samsung panel doesn't really mean anything. A lot of these cheap Chinese TVs use cheaper grade (reject) Samsung panels.

      • If you look in the service menu it's not actually "Samsung" but "Sumsung" as was the case with the Soniq 48"

        • +1

While some sung the praises of Korean LCD panels, Mee-Cee Pour Lee remained oblivious to his typo error on the product stickers - an error caused by poor visibility on his standard issue Chinese screen reject with numerous dead pixels.

        • typo cvonc samsung vs sumsung, clearly an error in the firmware code
they confirmed it was the same samsung panel two comments later -_-

        • @shawncro 222:

they confirmed it was the same samsung panel two comments later -_-

Are you sure? I Googled the 'Sumsung' part number for the panel in my 40" Soniq and it exactly matched a genuine Sumsung Samsung part.

can have the same part number but doesn't necessarily mean it's made by samsung (oem). plenty of chinese spare parts you can find on ebay for like laptop components and what not that have the same part number but obviously not OEM. but yeah more info about these "b-grade" / reject panels would be appreciated. I mean it's mainly people claiming these things but I haven't ever seen concrete evidence to suggest it's really true. regardless, the panel is shit. well for that particular soniq tv anyway.

        • @CVonC:

Samsung make the majority of Panels
Proven when you check service mode / part numbers and take the back cover off

B Grade panels exist that fail Samsung QC, instead of them binning them they send them off to other wholesalers as factory seconds and obviously wear the risk of a defective panel in the general public section.

      • yes and no, the samsung b grade panels aren't all bad
my JVC 48 incher works great
        no backlight issues
        cheap doesn't all mean crap

I bought a TV and after a period of time it didn't work. I guess you get what you paid for.

  • +3

I have never seen such extraordinary enthusiasm for COTD. Since joining in March 2014 OP has posted nothing else and even commented on nothing else.

It is also a remarkable coincidence OP regrets purchasing both TV brands suggested as alternatives and experienced unique difficulty returning one to ALDI, who consistently honour their 60 days policy.

    • +1

hahaha Good pick. I think OP should learn from his mistake and go for TV brands which offer at least 3 year warranty. OP not too late to cancel your order, If you had hard time returning TV to ALDI think about how will you return 2 TV back to COTD.

  • -2

rrpfor cheap Chinese no name no deal

  • Hopefully OP gets the TV and plugs it in and it turns out to big a kick ass bargain!

    Good luck OP.

  • buying rubbish is still buying rubbish - price doesn't change that fact
    :)

  • "•Panel refresh rate: 50Hz"
That kills it before anything else… a 55" tv with 50hz? No thank you. Go minimum 100hz with a tv this size.

    • 60hz minimum
PS4 and Xbox wont do above 60hz over 4k anyway :)

  • $79 delivery sounds expensive.
Makes the Aldi or BigW much better value.
