this is actually pretty good deal, shame about the resolution though.

  • This is a great deal, I agree, only let down by the graphics, which is close to standard for this type of spec'd computer. I have a eMachines E725, and its specs are almost identical, but no "N" wireless, and no bluetooth. But my graphics res is 1368 by 766 or similar, and I would LOVE it to be a touch higher than that. But having said that, this deal from MLN is GREAT, and one I'd seriously consider if I needed another laptop.

  • NOTE - this comes with Vista, not Windows 7, but you can downgrade to XP if you wanted to

  • Definitely a great deal, I just recommended my friend to buy the $499 deal on Friday.
If he knew he'll be crying now (Just a little bit). But I won't tell.

  • HDMI available ?

If anyone's keen, I just noticed the link to the other laptop, 30$ more
    https://www.mln.com.au/product/?itemID=782&typeID=23

    differences are:
    Processor:
    Intel Core2 Duo P7450 (2.13GHghz, 1066MHmhz FSB, 3Mb L2 cache)
    Intel® Core™2 Duo processor T6670 (2.2GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache)

    Storage:
    320GB 5400 rpm 2.5 SATA
    250GB (5400rpm) SATA

    Video:
ATI Mobility Radion, HD 3650 dedicated 512MmB +
    ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3470 with 256MB + Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator GM45

    Built in Devices:
    Headphone & mic port,
    Integrated microphone,
    iLiNK (IEEE1394),

    1x eSATA/USB Combo)
    Webcam"

    • are the video and cpu much improved? not really much of a pc nerd…sorry.
Also, what would be a similar bargain but with better resolution with hdmi output?
ALSO, can either of the above laptops handle 1080 videos? CHeers

      • Cpu 10% faster (1574 vs 1429)
        Video 97% faster (1814 vs 3571; Passmark 06)

        See:
        http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
        http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-3470.959…
        http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-3650.883…

Either should be able to handle full HD (1080p) with no problems. I understand that the "HD" in the Video card name indicates that the Video card can do most of the work decoding H.264 HD content such as from a Bluray. Note that these laptops don't have a bluray drive but this won't stop you from downloading H.264 1080p content from the internet though. For example you could download the 1080p version of Big Buck Bunny
        http://www.bigbuckbunny.org/index.php/download/

A second caveat. The monitor is only 1280x800, so the 1080p movie would be downscaled unless you attached an external monitor. I doubt you'd notice the drop in quality on a 15" screen though.

In summary, you should be able to download and play full High Definition movies (1080p), but on that monitor standard definition movies (720p) would look just as good, (720p is still vastly better than DVD quality movies)

  • had a chat with my cousin who knows more about these things than me …

the video card upgrade makes a big difference for movies and the like (but it's still not full 1080P resolution) …

the 1066mhz fsb is noticibly faster as well …

so main probs are it's last generation and no HDMI, so not idea for watching movies on a TV, but well worth the price difference if you were conscidering the other one

    • the graphics card has very little relevance to what resolution the screen supports, while the notebook cannot support 1080P playback on its own screen, niether can any other laptop below $1000. Its ability to support 1080P playback on an external screen is able as is any notebook with a dedicated graphics card can also do this.
Any dedicated graphics card can support 1080P playback externally.
You need a Hi res screen on your actully notebook to play it on your actual screen I am not ware of any machine below $1000 that has a FHD screen, in fact I am pretty sure only $1500+ machines have full HD screens.

  • Bought one today, System is good for that price….
Only thing is, laptop charger is too bulky (like a massive brick) , one of the biggest I have ever-ever seen. I wonder if this could be returned?

    • Well, I imagine it comes with the package. I usually buy a second power adapter for home anyway… maybe you could see if e.g. this power adapter is lighter:
      http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Laptop-AC-Adapter-Charger-Toshiba-Sat…

    • All Toshiba 90 watt adaptors for the L300, A300, A500, and L500 variants are the same size, after market adaptors can be smaller.
