      • . CyanogenMod available (ability to make it more like stock Android)

but they have got a bullet to the brain in recent news.

        • +2

Didn't want to confuse people with that.

Fact still stands there is an open source alternative OS available for mi5, but not mi5s. Whether it continues to be supported in the future (by LineageOS), is yet to be seen.

      • +1

        Thanks Closey
Whats the difference between Global Rom and the rom thats preinstalled on the mi5s?

I thought it needed Global Rom to have play store?

        • +2

On the mi5s it will be what is called a "Vendor ROM" which means that the seller will open the box, flash a new ROM onto the device with extra languages, Google Play Store, disable some Chinese apps, and potentially install some rogue ones.

It's generally recommended to wipe the Vendor ROM and install a stock image (Chinese, even) or one from xiaomi.eu. You can still use the stock Chinese version and install Google Play without having anything unlocked - you have to see a bunch of chinese writing but there are instructions on the en.miui.com forums on how to do it.

        • @closey: This is fantastic help, closey!

I was going to go for the Mi5s, but I think I'll go for the Mi5 now.

So with the Mi5, which has Global Rom - this should be fully sealed up and official Xiaomi software, correct?

        • +1

@mudkipz: Looks like they are flashing the Official Global ROM on top of the factory Chinese ROM. So "Open Box" but official software. In the end, if you can get OTA updates as per their claims, it'll be exactly the same as if it was a factory set global version.

        • @closey: Thanks for your help! I just read it there - "opened box"

        • @mudkipz: I've purchased several phones from this seller and they're happy to leave the box sealed with the Chinese / English ROM. You'll need to request this by messaging them. Shouldn't be a problem.

        • @PR0r: would you suppose there's any advantage to leaving it with the stock rom?

        • +1

@mudkipz: Unless you know how to do it yourself, just let them flash the Global ROM for you. This is the official Global ROM so you will get all the OTA update and Android 7 will be coming soon on Mi 5.

If someone want to reply about the EDL mode by following those on reddit forum, I can tell you that it will not work. "adb reboot edl" will not work anymore, it has been blocked in the bootloader. You need to use the modded micro-USB cable to boot into EDL mode. So just let the pro do it for you. You can reflash using the Updater app if you are still worry about tampered firmware.

Edit: just realised that you asked about Mi 5s, there is no official Global ROM, so you can use the stock rom with English and install Google Play yourself. The "Vendor ROM" has extra languages installed (Korean, Chinese, Russian…)

        • @samehada: I had already opted for the Mi5 (non-S). However, I'm wary of tampered ROMs. My orignal plan was to install Cyanogen. Seeing as that's no longer a choice, I'd be happy to go for Global Rom.

Given my concern about tampered ROMs though, is it easier to just let them install Global ROM, and then I reflash?

Or should I go through unlocking the bootloader and flashing it myself from China ROM?

I have some-what experience with flashing ROMs on older phones, such as the Nexus 5. But the process seems different with this.

        • +1

@mudkipz: Just let them do it, you can download the .zip ROM and use Updater app to flash again if you want, that is a much easier way. Or you can just request bootloader unlock and flash using Fastboot mode.

      • Thanks for the response I only just got to reading it now, I didn't know the Mi5s didn't have much rom support (which is a big deal for me), but I already pulled the trigger on the Mi5. That price was too good to ignore!

      • The mi5s has just had a proper Global ROM released for it. Sellers will be able to install this now instead of a Vendor ROM which is great news for OTA updates and security.

  • Hi Guys,
What does it mean going to one of the Ali express link, what does it mean by the following:-

Bundle: Standard Package, Charge Package, Music Package and the Full Package

    • +3

Scroll down the page a bit it has a visual for you

  • When I tried to grab one, the page says: shipping within 60 days.
    Is that true?

    • +1

first of all, the sale has not started yet. secondly, I think you faster delivery is an option.

  • +1

Other than the camera, is there a strong reason why people are preferring the Xiaomi Mi5 (32GB/3GB) for AUD $277 over the Zuk Z2 (64GB/4GB) for AUD $265?

    • The ZUK Z2 is definitely a good looking choice spec-wise - but many get scared off it because of the confusing state of English ROM support. The mi5 at least has an official global ROM with updates.

    • +1

I'm avoiding the Z2 because it doesn't have NFC.

  • Is Mi Max too big as a phone?

    • No way
      Good size tbh

      • +1

I'm considering grabbing one as a spare, currently have an S6. I kind of want a 7" tablet, for $223 and it doubling as a phone it's close enough.

    • +1

Personally I think it is too big to carry around in a pocket and it's quite chunky. I'd recommend paying a bit more and getting an MI5.

  • Anyone know when these prices go live?

    • midnight PST = 7pm AEDT

      • Thanks. Not long now!

    • i reckon USD, but the only other currencies I checked were AUD and EUR

  • no idea if it only me

    site everytime i click link

  • 5 minutes to go for those in QLD

    • +1

Why would it be different depending on where you live?

      • Daylight saving…

        Seriously?

        • Yeah but it's a Chinese website. They are going live at midnight PST US time…

        • @closey:

I could be wrong but not sure if it shows live for those in Sydney :p

        • @shawncro 222: Definitely live for those in NSW :D

        • @closey:

          I stand corrected then :)
I will always admit when I am wrong

    • +1

Yeah, its epic how many people were live on the site

      • What's amazing is, site shows no sign of slowing down. Very responsive.

        • @sk280, never once criticized it
I simply said I can see the amount of users connected through a script
          It is holding up well

Better than 99% of Aussie sites

        • @shawncro 222: Oh I know, didn't say you were, just amazed site holding up without issues compared to aussie sites and clickfuc*zy ;)

        • @sk280:

          Yes that site was horrendous

  • Do others receive email saying "payment successful" but "being verified"?

    • +1

Yes, same here - Payment successful but being verified. I ordered Mi Max with DHL shipping.

      • I would not worry sk280
it has just gone live, people need patience :)

        • +1

No not worried at all, not my first purchase at AE. Just confirming for DKC :)

    • I got the same email, this is NORMAL

Payment has been recieved okay, money has come out, there are 1000 units
I think its an automated message tbh DKC

  • "Sorry nothing is available to order now". wtf?

"Product can't be shipped to the region". I'm in Sydney.

  • +1

Mi 5 adds up to a little more than $199. cheapest you can get it is with the "standard package" and in white. $204.99 - $2 store coupon = $202.99

Top Cashback(US) was established much earlier than Cashrewards(AU).One of the best cashback sites, definitely legit.I got over US$100 cashback to my Paypal.

        • @Neoika:

Not once did I say its not "legit" don't put words into my mouth
I would rather deal with cashrewards, Australian run and owned, they deal with issues and I have no dramas, for the same of dollar difference I will stay with what I know works

        • @shawncro 222:

Ditto, Aussie Cash rewards. Support local!

        • +1

@Barry Beetroot: Support local?!Buy your phones from Aussie business, local stock, not overseas.

        • -1

          @Neoika:

Hey I (consciously) buy a lot of local stuff (aussie made, aussie ingredients, environmentally friendly, blah, blah) , but sometimes with electronics we find the cheapest deal.

  • +1

Bought a mi5. Black wasn't available before the sale, but white and gold available at 199 and 204 respectively.
Got the gold one - won't make a huge difference with a case anyway hey

    • +3

White was 204 and Gold was 199

      • +1

You are absolutely correct. I'm multitasking on the line with telstra and felt the need to give ozb a heads up. upvoted

  • +1

Just grabbed the mi max $159

  • Use USD as the currency to avail 10 dollar coupon from ali express. Note sure it get applied when AUD is used as payment currency.

NOTE: 10 dollar coupon gets applied via aliexpress app.

    • What's this coupon on the aliexpress app? I didn't get any?

      • Check under my coupouns in aliexpress app.

  • Are peeps paying in $US with 28 degrees or just paying AUD with any CC?

    • competitions, paid with Creditcard in AUD :)

    • I paid with my CBA mastercard.

      • Same spacejames :)

      • That will still usually get charged the 3% forex fee for transactions processed overseas in most cases

        • twister292, no care when I am saving a fortune on the mimax :)
I got like 8 bucks off with the coupon so that will be chewed by CBA anyway
          All relative

    • +1

You should ideally pay in USD with a CC that has no forex fees

      • twister, not everyone has that luxary :)
I can live with a 3% fee for a massive saving on the MiMax
You realise there are discount codes too so it balances it out

  • Bought my girlfriend a Note 4 as a birthday present, I wonder if it'll be here on time for her birthday… in 3 days time.

    • spacejames, if paid with DHL expect it here quickly

    • Nopes. Highly unlikely. The delivery services don't resume till 29th in Australia apparently, and then again they'll close from 31-dec to 2-jan.

      • I got DHL but even then I know it won't be here on time, ohwell she can wait! Now to try and restrain ordering one for myself.

      • twister, DHL are usually great to deal with
I bet you it will be here within the week easy, including holidays etc

        • DHL are great, but I've found AE sellets take their time when it comes to actually handing the device over to DHL…they create shipping labels and that gets started in the tracking as "shipment information received". Last time quite a few ozbargainers bought the RN3PP in the 11.11 deal, and a lot of them sat in "shipment information received" on the status for like 2 weeks before actually being handed over to DHL. From that point it took 2 days…

  • +3

yeah, can't resist, just bought Mi Max with DHL shipping for AU$250, plus cashrewards, cheers OP

  • +1

Becareful if you want to buy MiMix as the seller says no leather case in it!! however, all MiMix comes with a leather case! and the price is much higher than official website!

      • cheers, are you getting one ?

  • nobody buying Mi5s?

  • which one should i buy?

    • mi5

      • +1

        what about mi5s?

        • here is a comparison

major differences between Mi5 and Mi5s:
