  • I didnt think the affiliated AmEx Platinum Edge still offers the complimentary free flight?

The reason is I got a letter in mail last month saying my CPA affiliated Amex Plat edge will no longer be offering free flights but instead $200 credit.

Also my annual fee got increased from $99 to $149.

But you say they still offer the free virign flight option on certain affiliated cards?

Was a bargain whilst lasted these past 8 years, for $99 a year I got a return vrigin flight from Perth worth around $400+

Check the CPA AmEx Platinum Edge page, it still says free complimentary flight, I have also checked with a rep to be sure that affiliated cards are still offering free flight (at least for now, dont know what the future holds).

      • Just found out they're removing free domestic flight for existing card holders.

Much prefer the return domestic flight over $200 travel credit.

        https://www.finder.com.au/free-flights-removed-from-existing…

      • All cards will be changing to the $200 credit from April.
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/282158

        • True, all standard cards will be getting $200 travel credit, while at this point an affiliated AmEx Platinum Edge is still offering the complimentary flight. With that being said, affiliated Edge has an annual fee of $149, and for that even if you get $200 travel credit, purchase and travel insurance, earning flexible points transferable to a number of airline or hotel loyalty program, or be used for other rewards. Amex offer, and shop small offers where you and all supplementary card holders can earn statement credit for purchases made from specific retailers, so for some it still holds value for money, specially those who buy gift cards from supermarkets to be used towards purchase from other store , but YMMV.

        • @Rashed: Even affiliated cards will be changing to the $200 credit from 31 March 2017. So if you currently hold an affiliate card or apply for one now you would have to book your flight before that date to get the free flight.

        • @Holysmoke:
These affliliate cards still have the free flight & don't seem to mention changing:

        • @Gaz1:

I have an affiliated card and unfortunately I got the letter informing me of the change to travel credit. I will reassess and possible change cards before the next anniversary date.

    • how to claim flight? until March 2017 according to the letter.

      • +1

Call the number at the back of your card.

  • Does anyone have a comprehensive guide to these cards?

I see so many AMEX deals but the interest rates are high, they have a high annual fee (imo) and there are still a lot of places that either don't accept or have extra fees associated if you use AMEX.

    • +7

Not all Amex cards have high annual fees, three are even fee-free. To get a feel for the cards offered, my comment here has link to the entire Amex offering. Once there, you can select the criteria of interest (e.g. fee-free, travel insurance) on the left, to narrow down the cards that fit your criteria.

I think it is a misconception that Amex is impractical due to non-acceptance/surcharges. Nowadays, most big retailers/supermarkets etc accept them without surcharges. So much so, my main card is Amex, and the times I have to resort to other cards are infrequent - mainly for overseas purchases.

    • +1

I used to think the same as you. Since getting an AMEX explorer card I concur with bluesky! Amex is awesome!

    • +2

Trust me it's worth getting an Amex just for the cashback offers. You are correct that Amex is limited but the more people that use it the more coverage it gets.

      the interest rates are high

You should never leave any unpaid balance on your credit card.

      • Platinum Edge offers $200 travel credit plus bonus points for supermarket and fuel spend with $195 annual fee
        December 19, 2016
Platinum Edge offers $200 travel credit plus bonus points for supermarket and fuel spend with $195 annual fee
American Express are now changing the free flight benefit for new Platinum Edge applicants to a $200 flight credit for all cardholders from March 30th.

  • About the $200 Travel credit - from my 10 minute "research" I got the feeling they offer regular prices for hotels? What is your opinion? Anybody used this?

    • I have used travel credit for flights, the ticket price was the same at Qantas and Amex Travel, but unlike Qantas, with AmEx I could use the travel credit, earn bonus points on my purchase, and pay no credit card fee that Qantas charge. For hotels do your research, you will often find value for money, such as free nights offer, such as stay 3 nights pay for 2, FHR offers upgrades, guaranteed late check out, break fast for 2, $100 hotel credit to be used at hotel/resort/spa, etc.

      • Good info, thank you.

  • +3

Now that there is the $200 credit for a $195 fee I think it is better to switch to a no fee Amex and book travel with whoever and whenever you want. You will still get the cash backs etc.

    • True, if you don't value the purchase and travel insurance it comes with, or a better Membership Reward program and earn rate (Accent v Gateway).

      • The reward program is why I'll keep mine in spite of the changes to the free flight. We've probably earned a return flight or two in the past year with the points, and for what I spend money on this card probably has the best rewards program. I'll still use the $200 credit anyway, just would prefer a flight.

  • I was advised by one of their online reps that I can no longer convert my points to QFF?
I'm sad because I took the card up for that sole purpose.

    • When you signed up for the card did you enroll for Direct Qantas point earn as opposed to Accent?

      • there was never an option when I signed up

do you know if I can change over?

        • There should be, when you first register for the card. I got that option. You can always call Amex customer service, and ask them if you can change it.

        • @Rashed: So I've had a chat to them-
You can only enrol in Qantas if you sign up through CPA

Direct Qantas earnings hasn't been possible for a while

        • @mparf: Interesting.. I wonder if its for CPA Platinum Edge only or all affiliated Edge. Good to know. Thanks.

        • @Rashed: The Engineer affiliate also seems to allow Qantas point earning.

  • The ANZ Rewards Travel Adventure Card looks like a better deal now. It is $225 a year but offers a complimentary Virgin flight and also comes with both an Amex and a Visa on the one account. It has the insurances but does not have the bonus points when you shop at Woolworths , Coles , David jones and Myer like the Amex Platinum. Considering we use the free flight currently to fly from Adelaide to Brisbane for the Easter break each year this is worth over $500 for the fare to buy as you have to include the baggage costs as well.

I still have a platinum reserve - annual fee is more than the edge, but got notification that will get $400 credit each year instead of hotel or flights. Should pay for a decent hotel room, but we really don't use it that much any more other than the cashback deals since we got the Citibank card. Plan to cancel before the next fee is due. Will probably then get a no fee amex card to grab those amex deals.

Also check out the Explorer card: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/262944

Until Jan 30 you can score 110,000 bonus AMEX MR Gateway points (equivalent of 82,500 airline points), plus $400 travel credit, 2 x AMEX lounge access passes and smartphone screen. Plus Explorer spend is flat 2 Gateway points for everything except Govt spend - which is a great earn rate. Annual fee is higher at $395, but you get double the travel credit plus many more bonus points.

Yes, the Edge has a better earn rate for supermarkets and petrol if you plan to convert to airline points (3 and 2 airline points, vs flat 1.5 airline points for Explorer). But you'd need to spend a whopping $27,500 (or over $500 per week for a year!) at supermarkets on the Edge just to get the equivalent in sign on points, as opposed to the instant gratification of scoring those points upfront with the Explorer. That's a lot of money to have to spend at supermarkets!

  • So which one are the no annual fees but still give you access to the cashback deals?

Now with the increase in fee from $99 to $149 and change to $200 credit from free flight , then I dont really value the amex card at $149 a year.

The travel insurnace dosent work for me and the points not a biggie for me either.

    • I believe any of them would give you access, including zero fee cards.

    • The ANZ Plat or Black card has no annual fee for the first year & 50K or 75K free points:

The 3 no annual fee cards are Essential, Qantas Discovery and Velocity.
See my comment for more details about them. I also posted specifically about the Essential card here.

  • What is the usual time between application and approval/getting the card? For a new customer, assuming all goes well.

    • Once you get approved, you can except to get the card within a week.

      • Great, thanks.

    • I filled out the application last arvo and got a text to call Amex about the application.
The rep said that they weren't able to run a check with my Driving License, tried again but nothing so tried with my medicare which was successful. Was told that the card was approved while on the call and will be in mail in 7 days.

Seemed weird however I checked the number I called and it is on their website(should have done this prior to calling them)

  • Called up to cancel my card and was offered 8,000 bonus points to keep it. Will keep it for another couple of weeks then cancel it.

    • How long have you had the card, out of interest?

    • Isn't that equivalent to $4?
