    Good find.

      read the reviews, in short:
      Pro:
SD820,, 4GB/64, best audio, tests ranked in top, band28 AU$500
Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 standard, recharge times about an hour and 40 minutes. "In our tests, it took the Axon 7 about 30 minutes to juice to 50 percent."

      Con:
QHD scr paired with 3,250mAh battery - wont last a full day (All about make it hi spec & thinner, but what most people want or NEED is a phone to last a long day!)
review says great battery life (?)
average camera 20mp but meh in low light

First hand experience - battery last for 15 or so hours of extensive use (lots of calls 4+ hrs and on top of this - web browsing). Note that the phone is QC3 so recharges very quickly.
I read the reviews about the camera too prior to purchasing, IMHO low light photos are fine, took quite a few during NYE fireworks.

        • have you tried other 3rd party camera apps to see if it improves things abit?

        • @homersyd:

Yes, a couple of apps but I did prefer the ZTE supplied app. The phone also comes with OIS, which in my opinion is a bonus.

        • @enander: so they didnt improve the PQ?

        • @homersyd: I didn't notice any difference. I don't think the pix are bad in the first place. With OIS and the ability to use manual settings it is very good.

          But, hey that's just me.

        • @enander: cool thanks!

      • Another big pro is the SD card slot.

    • Its an awesome phone for the price. Don't forget the high end audio chip. Only other phone that has it is v20. Great first post.

What's the warranty like dealing wiz zi Germanz?

    • This. I couldn't seem to find any info on warranty. Did I miss something ?

    • Looks like German Warranty only:

      http://www.ztemobile.de/support/garantie/

    • In Germany you get 24 months warranty by law.
Probably have to send it back to Amazon Germany though, but they are pretty good in dealing with warranty cases.

Also free 30 days change of mind returns with full refund (also by law).

      • Any idea how to actually send the phone in and claim that warranty? Per https://auspost.com.au/parcels-mail/postage-tips-guides/dang… as pointed out further down this thread you apparently can't ship lithium batteries to Germany.

        • Hmm, that's strange.
Is the battery removable? If so, I would just send it back without the battery and explain why.

        • @MrTweek:

Battery isn't removable without taking apart the phone which would void warranty anyway :(

        • @Saudade:
I guess you would need to check other carriers then, but they will probably be way more expensive.

DHL has a long and confusing article about Lithium batteries. If I understand it right, you can send them, as long as they are installed in the phone and there are no more than 2 in a parcel:
          http://www.dhl.com.au/en/express/shipping/shipping_advice/li…

Guess you'd need to dig a bit deeper to be sure.

        • Read it again.

"Lithium batteries can only be sent internationally (air or sea), or domestically by air if the battery or cell (maximum of two batteries or four individual cells) are installed in the device and meet all the packaging requirements."

You're not allowed to ship batteries naked because they're dangerous if they get punctured.

        • +1

          @VoxL:

          Read it again.

"You cannot send lithium batteries to Germany, Italy, Laos or Macao. If you do, your item will be refused or returned to sender."

        • @clse945111:

Yep, sorry. That sucks. Might have to find some other way to get it there.

  • +1

The reviews of this phone are awesome. This is some deal and deserves to get very hot!

Just one thing, if I buy this phone for work use can I still claim on tax if it's purchased from overseas?

    http://www.digitaltrends.com/cell-phone-reviews/zte-axon-7-r…

    http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/zte-ax…

    • +3

How would you claim tax on something you haven't paid tax for?

      • +2

I think they mean claim an income tax deduction, not a GST input tax credit.

      • +4

VAT/GST is different to income tax. If he's using it for business purposes then the value/depreciation of the phone could be deducted from his income for the year reducing his income tax bill. The lack of GST should be irrelevant I believe…

    • +1

Yes of course, you just couldn't claim gst if you were abn as there isnt any.

    • that's fine so long as you have evidence in English language to substantiate the deduction.

  • +1

Thanks for the replies. Yes, it was regarding the income tax deduction. Sounds like it's possible making this even better for me!

  • Nice post. The Amazon currency conversion at $498 works out better for me though, as my banks (St George) exchange rate ends up bringing the price up to $510.

  • +1

Can I ask , this dual sim can have dual 3G, 4G stand by ? In the past only one 3G, 4G active and the other is 2G only , now 2G is being phased out in Australia , I need one sim for data 4G and other for calling , thanks.

    • +1

It's very promising according to Whirlpool wiki but highly recommend you ask folks on the linked Whirlpool thread.

      • Thanks for the link , I will have a good look at it .

    • +3

The A2017G model definitely has 4G with 3G standby. I replaced my OnePlus 2 with this phone just for that reason. The Whirlpool wiki confirms it too.

  • ooooh, this or a LG G5 for about the same price???

    • +1

      Alright, purchased!

      • +2

Good choice. I owned a G5 for a while and I really didn't like it at all. In contrast the Axon 7 has a nicer (IMO) AMOLED display, front-facing stereo speakers, an awesome DAC (for a phone) and it really doesn't skimp on anything where it counts.

And as a bonus the Axon 7 is almost certainly going to receive a Daydream-ready certification from Google some time within the next month, which means that with the coming Nougat update you'll be able to use the Axon 7 to experience high-quality mobile VR with the Daydream View headset :)

        • Phew… Even after purchasing I was still wondering if I made the right choice, I heard there are some radio problems. Glad to hear I chose the better phone though.

    • +1

I'd take the G5 all day.

I wouldn't pay $500 for a phone with a sub par camera. That's just me though, I'd rather a phone I can take the best quality photos with as I don't carry another camera.

  • -2

I think the 2 years warranty is worth paying a little more

    • +6

      A little more?

      $200.00 more?

The only version of the Axon 7 that is covered under warranty in Australia is the version that ZTE are currently selling directly for $699.00 (and will be available from JB Hi-Fi for the same price later this month).

    • +1

From what I know, German warranty is actually more extensive (or at least on par) than Australian warranty.

      • except u'd need to send it back to germany…wonder how much the postage will be and whether they will be happy to ship it back

        • Shipping back would be around $20, so not terrible. By German law, the retailer is required to pay postage for warranty cases, although not sure if that applies for international. Amazon tends to be pretty good with warranty cases though, so chances are they would even pay for the postage.

whether they will be happy to ship it back
Not sure what you mean by this. They can't just keep stuff that you returned without sending back or refunding. Neither in Australia, nor in Europe.

        • @MrTweek:

Shipping back would be around $20

Is this true? Sending a phone from Sydney to another suburb would cost me $15…

        • @clse945111:

Checked Australia post and standard parcel for around 500 grams (phone is 150g) is like $28 to Germany with estimated delivery of ~6 business days. Includes tracking however damage coverage and other features cost extra.

You'd probably have to pay for return shipping as well as the german ZTE page says they do complimentary return shipping to German addresses only. However maybe going through Amazon might get you something better.

        • +1

          @Saudade:

Small satchel (up to 500g) is starting at $28.48 from Sydney 2000, insurance for $480 is $19.60, signiture is $4.99 (probably not needed for a non-Paypal transaction)… so it is $48.08 for insured delivery without signature.

Also, Germany doesn't take lithium batteries, as noted here: https://auspost.com.au/parcels-mail/postage-tips-guides/dang…

        • @clse945111:

Didn't notice the battery restriction, that's pretty critical as you can't really take the battery out of the phone and then send it off for repair.

So basically unless someone can find a different way of sending the phone to Germany you can't really claim warranty at all…

        • @clse945111: wat? Auspost standard parcel is $7.60. Even express is cheaper than $15.
Cheapest option Auspost has to Germany is $21.48 via Economy Air.

        • @MrTweek:
Yeah, sorry didn't quite make it clear, I was referring to the price after adding insurance and signature (for my LG G4 repair send to Rhodes from 2000).

          Postage $8.50
          Signature on delivery $2.95
          Extra cover $4.50
          Total# $15.95

It's probably unwise to send phones without insurance as Auspost did lose a $600 phone that I sent (and I didn't insure), but it's totally your choice.
Also Economy Air has no tracking.

        • You can ship it.

"Lithium batteries can only be sent internationally (air or sea), or domestically by air if the battery or cell (maximum of two batteries or four individual cells) are installed in the device and meet all the packaging requirements."

AusPost wont allow it if you're only shipping a naked battery. Batteries become dangerous when they get punctured so they don't ship them just in case the packaging gets damaged. If the damage has to go through a post packaging, the product box and a phone chassis then I'm sure you're good to go.

EDIT: Just saw the last line. Might need to ask an AusPost rep.

    Ordered. And so it begins.

Thanks for the heads-up on this Nightshade. I was absolutely going to buy an Axon 7 this month and I doubt I would have stumbled upon this deal myself.

looks like a "mini" version also available: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B01I0931A8?ref=emc_b_5_t&th=1
not really mini, but is marginally smaller.

trying to decide what to upgrade my galaxy s3 mini too.

  • Are there any tricks to getting this for the direct conversion rate, or does it depend on your bank?

    • +1

Certain credit cards like 28degrees or ANZ Rewards Travel give you the spot rate

      • Thought so, cheers.

  • Quote from GSM arena comment "They picked the A2017g( eu axon 7) it is the worst axon 7 model, Users have been reporting crappy audio output, Crappy software and even performance difference, So make sure you get a2017u if you want to buy an axon 7"

    • +8

My level of confidence that this is a meaningful critique approaches zero.

    • Software issues? Would of thought Qualcomm provided the drivers etc?

  • -2

This phone doesn't even have the latest Qualcomm chip

    • +1

IIRC it has the latest chip at time of launch which was in July 2016. The Pro chips only started sampling in Q3 2016.

EDIT: ZenFone 3 Deluxe by Asus was the first phone to use the 821 chip. This was released in October if my Google Fu is working as intended.

    • The 821 and the 820 are fundamentally the same SOC: https://www.xda-developers.com/a-look-at-what-has-changed-fr…

"These improved yields have allowed Qualcomm to release essentially a revision of the Snapdragon 82x that can either use 5% less power at the same clock speeds as the original version, or be tuned for slightly higher clock speeds at around the same power usage as the 820."

I can't imagine a single scenario in which it would matter that you had an 821 instead of an 820. Only the upcoming 835, which we probably wont see in an actual product until April at the earliest (which you can probably expect to pay $1100+ for), is going to be significantly better.

    • so you want a price like this but with the latest of everything?! come on we are in australia mate ;P

  • +1

My LG G4 just bootlooped at 13 months.

    This, or the Oneplus 3?
Or wait for a deal on a Galaxy S7?

    • I'm in the same boat. Loved my G4 for a lot of reasons which made me want the G5 but this phone and this deal was too good to go past. Was tossing up between the axon, one plus 3t and the G5. This happens to have everything I wanted and much cheaper.

      • Loved my G4 too…but yes bootloop as well…the only thing is I'm worry this is not as good as the G4's camera…it was amazing especially low light shots!!

  • +3

I was interested in buying this one but came across https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/5gub1d/i_regret_bu…

Has anyone else faced those issues?

    • Perusing the dedicated Axon 7 subreddit indicates the closing of apps when turning the screen off is fairly common although rebooting the phone seems to be a common fix that lasts for a few days. Some also seem to have luck playing with the app-specific power management settings.

Can't speak to the android pay issue.

  • Does the German one get the free damage protection that Australian one gets? http://ausdroid.net/2016/11/23/buy-axon-7-zte-australia-now-…

I was going to wait for JB HIFI to get it it for $699 but this price is tempting as need new phone now.

  • Just wondering if this comes in black at all?

Also, this or the Huawei P9?

    • +2

if audio is important to u = Axon
if camera is important to u = P9

Good luck if both are important…;)

  • Does anyone know if it's 2 sim cards AND sdcard, or the 2nd slot is sim2 OR sdcard? Thanks

    • 2nd slot is sim/Sd card slot.

  • This is coming up to 499 for me

    • If you really want the phonevthe 128gb version is cheaper from chinese stores

      • You might get a chinese ROM instead of a ROW (rest of the world) ROM.

I bought a lenovo from chinese stores, as only the chinese models comes with 3gb instead of 2gb RAM but so far its working properly with the chinese ROM although there are some drawbacks. If you plan to flash it, then its fine.

  • Thanks for the deal! Was going to buy this as soon as JBHIFI received stock this month… glad to save such a big amount for the same model!

  • This is a great looking phone… but I am curious about people's thoughts on the "hybrid SIM" slot on this and other dual SIM devices?

I presume people arent bothered about sacrificing the 2nd SIM for SD expansion (or have no need for a 2nd, this is a great phone for single SIM users too obviously), but I would like both dual SIM (Telstra business + Amaysim personal SIMs) and SD storage. For this reason, I had a LG G4 (H818P from UAE) with the dual SIM + SD, which unfortunately started bootlooping recently. The AU LG V20 sitting at couple hundred above this ZTE is not a great competitor in price (great specs though), plus I'm reluctant to go LG again (obviously!).

There are a reasonable amount of dual SIM devices, with separate SD .. but then there's non-AU stock/warranty, band 28, etc etc plethora technical specs to compare.

Anyway, just interested in people's use cases for these hybrid SIM products.

  • Damn, says 368Euro now.

    • +1

      VAT removed at checkout.

      • +1

        Thanks, realised my mistake.
Brain still not fully into gear after the weekend!

  • So worth waiting for another price drop, or grabbing this? Historically, does there tend to be more price drops?

I see Aliexpress has 128GB greys for only A$40 more, but the sellers don't really have a strong rep. The price difference makes the 128GB tempting, though

  • Watch what sensitive information you put through your ZTE or Huawei's chance they'll have Chinese spyware installed. No big deal for personal use.

    http://www.channelnews.com.au/secret-chinese-code-that-sends…

    • +1

Thanks for the info. For what it's worth, it appears some researchers think that the Axon 7 does not have the spyware.: https://community.zteusa.com/thread/13335

      Take with salt.

      • With some of those companies banned from installing their hardware with the NBN and other secure places I don't think they can be trusted!

Like I say personal info isn't under threat it seems to be valuable business intelligence and exploiting pathways into high level targets - plenty of info out there on Australian hacks!

    Am i doing something wrong?

  • +1

Amazon conversion rates are generally pretty bad so I went with the Mastercard conversion rates, which seems to be the convention for Ozbargain.

The $480.55 figure is reached by paying on a credit/debit card that doesn't have currency conversion fees (such as the 28 Degrees card).

edit: Huh, this was meant to be in response to spriggan43

  • I was previously thinking about getting this but increasingly leaning towards the LeEco Le 1 Pro (X800), which can be had for ~$270 AUD on Aliexpress after cashback.

Snapdragon 810 instead of 820, also weaker GPU.
    Lacks B28.
No SD card slot (still dual SIM though), the main drawback for me.
    Lacks the front facing speakers.
Would imagine the camera is not as good.

Otherwise, same 2K resolution, up to 64GB internal. However, the upside is it also has excellent headphone out quality (see Head-Fi), and the DAC / AMP has better integration with 3rd party apps (natively works with everything). I have read the Axon 7's discrete DAC will only work with certain audio apps and will otherwise default to the in-built (inferior) Snapdragon one. LeEco has newer phones with the latest chips but unfortunately they've gone headphone jack-less and no longer offer exception headphone out quality.

Anyway food for thought. Still might jump on this deal as it's the cheapest B28 supporting option I've seen for this phone. Also worth seeing if any new models are announced in the next couple of days during CES 2017.

    • SD 810 is a nightmare no matter how much you try to tweak it with different roms and kernels and optimizing governor, etc. it overheats and drains battery because of the octacore. Currently have an HTC One M9 and was looking to get rid of it for the Axon 7

      • I wonder how much the build / software integration determines the kind of issues the SD810 has. There are some posts / reviews who note issues, otherwise who say it's fine. There was a discussion about it here when a deal came up for it about 3 months ago:

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/264369

        • I wonder how much the build / software integration determines the kind of issues the SD810 has.

Some devices have better thermal dissipation characteristics than others.

      • My Nexus 6P is doing fine with the 810.

        • Isn't the 6p heavily throttled by the software?

        • @clse945111: No overheating, no lag. What throttling? And if so, why would it even matter if it's not noticeable?

        • @raven2000:
Google might be your friend, just type in 6p throttle and you'll see.
In terms of not noticing, you're not noticing doesn't mean it's not there, your phone doesn't run on 100% all the time until you do something that's power hungry… The problem with 810 is that it doesn't handle high performance that well and generates a lot of heat, so most manufacturers throttled it to reduce overheating, but it will just end up having significantly reduced performance.

    • Just to chip in - I was in the same boat as you too, maybe you can consider the PPTV King 7 (6" phone with 2k screen + dual sim + SD card + 3GB RAM + Helios X10 + ESS DAC) all for around $160 AUD delivered.
I'm still waiting for mine to arrive but done heaps of google fu and the reviews are awesome bang for buck! :)
