Asus ROG STRIX Laptop - i7 6700HQ / 8GB Ram / 128GB SSD / 1TB 7200rpm HDD / 15.6" FHD / GTX1060 6GB - $1996 @ Harvey Norman

210

After seeing the interest in the alienware deal I thought I'd share this Asus deal at Harvey Norman. I bought one at the sales and am happy with it. Price seems very competitive and is the cheapest I can find in Australia although the model may be superseded. Decent specs and has a fast 7200rpm 1tb hdd contrary to what the Harvey Norman site says.

  • Without looking at reviews, looks like very decent specs for the price.
Is the screen glossy or matte?

Doesn't seem that different spec wise to the Lenovo T560 deals at $1059 (less with cashback) that were going at Christmas, except they were 16 GB, 256GB SSD also Nvidia graphics 1060 ….. no spindle drive included but has space for one.

Bought one for my son as a gaming laptop.

The T560 definitely did not have a GTX 1060 6GB in it, I understand that they came with the GT 940MX. The 1060 (conservatively) should be at least three times as powerful. This would almost be the most expensive component in the laptop.

The T560 also would have the i7-6500u CPU (a dual core / 4 thread) while the Asus has the i7 6700hq (quad core / 8 thread).

These laptops are in completely different leagues and not comparable at all. The GT 940MX is not designed for gaming as it'll only run older games on low settings, and sold mainly as an alternative to intergrated graphics. The GTX 1060 6gb however will run all modern titles on high settings at 1080p with no issues.

  • gsync?

  • Very nearly used my amex offer last month on this one.

Keep in mind the 8gb ram is soldered onto the board and you have only 1 x dimm slot for upgrading ram. May or may not impact on what you plan for it. Other than that I think it's pretty reasonable

    • I had 3 amex cards registered so that helped me make the decision. I also figured that the ability to upgrade to a total of 24gb ram should be plenty anyway.
