Media Center GOLD is a really multifunctional player!
It allows not only to play audio and video in more than two hundreds different media formats (MKV, FLV, VOB, MP4, OGG, FLAC, MP3, AVI, etc.), but also this player provides a set of very cool features such as search for the media content from SoundCloud and YouTube, creating and editing your own playlists, Last.fm scrobbling and much more. You can also use Media Center GOLD in offline mode by caching music or video.

It's free for limited time and then going to get paid as per developer.

  • There was a similar app (by the same dev?) that recently went free before being pulled from the store and replaced by this one. I didn't get much time with the other one, but it didn't look too bad for free.

So… Why would I get this and not vlc?

    • +5

Why can't you have both? 🤔

    • +3

So… Why would I get this and not vlc?

Why would you get either when you can have MPC-BE with LAV Filters and madVR?

      • +17

        What?

        • +2

@kamoi: Why is this better than MPC-HC

        • @wsxasd:

BE is a better looking fork, under the hood they're the same

        • @tatsulotto: Arguable! BE is also less updated but does have some great features, I love the seek preview! very reminiscent of hovering over the seek section of a youtube video to give you an idea :)_

Not sure how this is better than say plex or kodi which are free

    • This is free, for now.

Nobody was sure how Chrome was better than Firefox at first. Try it and see how you like it - the price is right for an Ozbragainer to find out…

      • +10

Yeah, if you need to gobble up RAM, Chrome sure is great.

      • +4

Except Chrome is a botnet and not better than Firefox at all. Awful comparison.

      • Chrome isn't better than Firefox, it invades your browsing history and privacy. Firefox is better for add-ons and privacy although slower in performance.

        • FireFox is a memory hog. Use Chrome in InCognito mode if you want. Which browser does not invade into privacy. you search google in firefox and you are invaded…

        • +1

@Gaggy: Chrome is a massive memory hog these days as well.

        • @MrFunSocks: Yea, but less compared to Firefox. Chrome splits it into different blocks, but still less. Few websites makes Firefox nuts and it takes over 1 or 2 GB memory. I will say use Microsoft Edge if you want to use Firefox.
Why you will use a browser if it is slow. That was the whole point of using Chrome or Firefox at the first stage, when IE was super slow.

        • @Gaggy: Try Epic Browser for better privacy

        • @mistermr6: Interesting. Never heard of it. Is it a good product? Taken it does what it says.
Edit: Based on open source Chromium. Hope they remain that honest. Will try that out. Thanks for sharing.

          @Gaggy:

I have been a daily user of both Firefox and Chrome for 5+ years and I work on other peoples computers for a living and memory usage isn't even close. Chrome uses WAY more memory.

On very old computers with limited memory Firefox is 10 times faster due to using less memory.

        • @IamEzza: That is just your perception as benchmarks say something different. It is still better than IE, but not from Chrome.
There is a reason Chrome became more famous. People want more speed and not a sluggish or slow memory hog when you have multiple pages open with flash videos. Whatever Chrome does and split memory blocks, it is much faster even after 10-15 tabs open (though not perfect).

It's not better than either. Don't waste your time.

Give me Kodi anyday. Been running it ever since it was a homebrew app for the original Xbox. Must have for me on any device its available for.

    • I've used Plex on my Lumia 950xl (WP10) and it's ok but can't get kodi on windows phone. Going to try this out.

  • How to resize the window?

This is quite a nice app, it reminds me a little of Window Media Player just before we lost it, and the search function does not dissapoint. I typed in an obscure Aussie hip hop song and got heaps of choices. All it needs is some bass boost and some better equaliser presets.

…it reminds me a little of Window Media Player just before we lost it…

      Lost what?
I've got Win10Pro and it happily plays WMP12.

Unless you mean Windows Media Centre. ;)

Is everyone on OzB a pedant?

        • For those who think this means something else. https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/pedant

        • +4

          @stormii:

That's a major detail not a minor one. Media Centre is a totally different product to Windows Media Player.

        • @stormii: pedant? Pedantic. Everybody would've gotten that. Do you have a definition for condescending perhaps?

I was hoping for a Media Center return in Windows 10, especially with Live TV.

Haven't found a better replacement yet.

    • Yep, hopefully our Windows 8 media centres hold out for another few years - at least until broadcast TV stays relevant!

      • Broadcast TV hasn't been relevant for many years already.

    • My biggest lost with the migration from Win7 => Win10, the lost of Windows Media Center & easy Live TV access.

    • +1

This worked for me. The 10.1 patch broke it so you have to have 10.1 installed Before you install this.

      • Thanks for the great link!

I agree, kodi is where it's at.

    • Kodi Emby.

  • VLC or this one - which is better?

    • Do you want a media player, or a media centre?

      • What's the difference?

        • One plays media, the other is a hub to media and plays media.

Just gave it a try and a few features I haven't found (either because they're not there or my 10 minutes of use wasn't enough).

1- Play speed. This is crucial to me as many tutorials (thanks OzB) go a little too slow and usually 1.5x speed is more appropriate.

2- Keyboard shortcuts. Spacebar is of course implemented but many are missing such as jump 3, 5, or 10 seconds with arrow keys

3- Couldn't have a video take up the screen in windowed mode. You either get a thumbnail size image or go fullscreen.

4- Additional shortcuts also not present. This includes: Stop, mute, volume up or down, zoom, etc.

I know I didn't play with it for long but the lack of the above features sent me running straight back to VLC. I rely heavily on shortcuts and the truth is, I'm comfortable where I am. If someone can suggest another player, as powerful as VLC, with all the relevant shortcuts and with a nicer interface, I'd be happy to tip my hat to them.

Have you tried PotPlayer? Feature wise it's pretty similar but once you select the touch screen theme it's much nicer to look at than VLC, plus it doesn't have that stupid traffic cone which is a big win.

      • thank you for your reply. I'll give it a go shortly.

    • You have helped the dev (if they ever see this) know what features would make it better. Writing this in the reviews for them would be good, but in a "it would be better if" style. Constructive criticism like is is what it is about.

  • +1

    Is this better than Potplayer?

    • I still prefer KMPlayer than Potplayer, more flexible settings, esp for subtitles

      • I get some trouble with KM. Some mkv files just shows a green screen. and it doesn't add files automatically on a playlist.

  • Is there a way to add this to your account whilst you are logged in using Windows 7?

    • xbox or windows phone?

      • Iam have logged into my account from Win 7 - the MS website says the app is not compatible with my device; I have two home PCs and a tablet on Win 10

  • 2 questions… can it play HEVC/x265 content? and can it play content from a networked Samba share?

  • +1

Just get it in case you need it later on. It's freeeeeee.

  • Just a warning - on installation the EQ is set to "1965" which makes it sound all kinds of wrong - thin, tinny, no bass. As if you're listening on a pocket transistor radio.

    Why would they do that!

My advice: unless you have a really good reason to use EQ, turn it off.

  • Anyone tested this on xbox one? or would vlc be better?

  • CCCP is good enough for me but cant complain about free

  • Great find, +1 for free app.
