How to Make OzBargain More Profitable for Scotty and The Team

Hi,

I love OzBargian, I've been on here for just over a year and have saved $100s if not $1000s.

I hate ads, so I was wondering, what ideas could we propose that makes OzBargain more profitable, without impacting the bargains or the user experience

I was thinking potentially having trackable links (eg, so ANZ knows how many sign-ups came from grassroots OzBargain promotions)… how that generates an income is still for discussion, but I'm sure we can think of something if we put our minds together!

You should subscribe to OzBargain Premium, it is well worth the fee, but it is still by invitation only.

    • What is this premium subscription? Haven't heard of it.

    • Sssshhhhhhhhh!!!! We thought we could trust you!

Good thing he didn't mention OzBargain Gold and Platinum ;)

        • You've upgraded to platinum I take it? I have the Rhodium membership :)

@Wystri Warrick: first rule of fight club? You all probably just bought yourself a one way ticket back to normal membership

Don't forget the first rule of OzBargain Premium.

Thanks! A moderator just PM'd me the link to sign up :)

  • Scotty isn't around at the moment, but I believe that I can speak for him by saying that he isn't really looking to make OzBargain anymore profitable and the current ads for guests (or opt in for members) bring in enough revenue to keep things going smoothly. We don't need to do anything further or do anything that may impact the site content (eg other bargain sites doing 'sponsored deals' at the top of the home page).

For those that don't like ads but have turned them on in the past: You can turn off ads in your account settings, that is of course completely fine if you do that and is one of the perks of being a member. There's also the option of turning text only ads on.

    My account > settings.

    OzBargain Settings
    Banner ads:
Whether to display banner ads in OzBargain. A registered user can opt-out from seeing the banner ads.

      TL;DR ozbargain is ozballer

This comment makes me feel bad for turning off ads

The fact that I can sign up for an account for free, and then opt out of ads is awesome! And hence I've left them on as a thank you. More sites should use this model!

Never speak ill of the leader. The leader is good! The leader is great!

Na na na na na na na na Leader!

you dont need adblock, just choose Show No Ads in the account settings.

You could probably click on the ads a whole bunch - do they generate more revenue for clicks, or just for number of pageviews?

    • Best not to do that as the advertisers may pull their ads if people are clicking through but not looking at the site/purchasing anything (lack of return).

Well the site is community based.
I don't think the domain founders need to be millionaires.

I can set up a Paypal donate button for you to contribute… ;)

I'm not sure businesses really want the typical OZB member as a customer. They are usually loss making for the business, generating the lowest revenue but costing the most such as with staff time through haggling and exerting their consumer rights, aren't very loyal, and their "positive" word of mouth can be a very expensive lesson for the business.

  • As neil has said, we don't need to be more profitable. We have enough revenue for our operation (plus a bit more for reserve & charity donations), and that's good enough for now. More money probably means more headache for me as people would start bugging me on expansion, how to get even more money etc.

So thanks for the thoughts but we will sort that out ourselves.

    • As neil has said

Hmmm, I think it was Hamza23 who said

At the risk of being considered a "suck-up" as well, I would like to say thank-you to the people who run this site. It has not only saved me a fair bit of money, it has also provided me with a lot of laughs and, at times, a place to vent my frustrations. May the site continue for a long time.

Yeah same. Thanks to the mods and the regular posters, I've scored plenty of deals in the past year and two.

May Ozbargain live long and prosper.

I think the best thing we can all do is form a gang and fight with Kath Armstrong of Cheapskates.com.au - I mean, she is always on ACA but I haven't seen ozbargain, not even once.

    • +1

That's a good thing. CoTD became shitty after constantly appearing on ACA.

Probably a simple way to help OzBargain is to just tell friends and family and give people links to good bargains.

  • LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO OZBARGIN ~ GOD MODE

Its called an adblocker, now please playpal me the balance of your bank account

    • Haha, I'm using adblocker! But I feel a little guilty doing so on ozbargin (because I want to support it) - not guilty enough to turn it off though!

That's one of the reasons I started this thread!

  • Can purchase in-site currency which can be used for:
