So what does this app actually do?

    • +2

I'm not sure about all of the functionality, but the biggest one for me is being able to control the cursor/type on my phone (so that it's on the PC).

It works especially well when I'm watching a movie on the TV (Linked to a laptop) I can remotely control the laptop from a distance in case I need to pause, turn the volume up or anything like that!

Why not install Plex on your computer and phone to do the same thing?

        • Wasn't aware/haven't tried Plex and there is a lot more you can do with unified remote but that's the only thing I use it for

        • @Hunry: Plex is free (both PC and mobile app) and will fit your use case perfectly I think (if that is your only use case, that is). Install the app on your smartphone and you can control the video and audio from your phone. My computer is in a bedroom, I use a chromecast on my tv, and have Plex installed on my computer and phone, and it works flawlessly.

Someone who's only used Plex tries to convert someone who's only used Universal Remote. Why do?
I've used both in the past and now I just use a wireless keyboard and mouse heh.
Plex is a demanding, always-on media server (already not really suitable for a battery powered laptop) with an (imo) awkward interface.
UR's MediaMonkey remote was flawed, and desktop viewing didn't support multiple screens, Windows media controls were great though.
Idk what the point of me writing this was… Bye

@buttstuff: Actually I've had unified (not Universal, get it right) remote for years but was offering another option to achieve the same end result. But great assumption on your part, well done! And remember kids, don't do drugs and stay in school.

        • -1

@Trishool: Haha yep, one wrong word and I'm a drug-using dropout, great assumption!
I know what the point of writing that was, I just didn't want to be rude, but now that I know you act like a tool on the internet it's ok : )
Your suggestion was terrible, installing a media server on a laptop and having to switch from your preferred program to Plex's underwhelming media player to utilise controls OP already has access to is pretty dumb.
So there's your Why not install Plex on your computer and phone to do the same thing
          °Drops keyboard°

      • So you use the phone to control the laptop to control the TV ?.

I'm not sure if I should be worried or impressed.

I think chipmunkdude (below) worded it a lot better than me, haha

I use it all the time to control my laptop from a distance when I have it hooked up via HDMI to a display. It has some pretty useful functionality.

      • If you use Chrome, you can use the Remote Desktop app. Works great for me when I can't find my keyboard.

  • Already have this and love it! Jump on it while you can!

Love this app, my computer is 1 metre away from my bed but I use this when I'm in bed anyway and I want to turn off my PC/put it to sleep, or if I just want to check something on my PC via screen viewer. It's the must have app for lazy people

  • I've used this a couple of times, for presentations and to play/stop movies when I connect the laptop to the TV via HDMI. Sometimes it's unresponsive, other times it's very slow. i.e you press a button, the action is performed after 3 seconds. Good concept and great price, but be wary that it may not function as well.

  • Testing this right this instant. Love it! Thanks Op

Can't go wrong for 20 cents. I found 5c at work today so I essentially got another 25% off haha

Many thanks for mentioning this I wasn't aware it existed! Probably going to replace TeamViewer with this too!

    • This is the problem with Google. They have lots of great apps, but they just don't tell people about it. So what do they do when only a handful of people us it? They kill it. I hope they don't kill Hangouts. It's the most versatile chat client I can think of. All this talk about killing off their APIs makes me a bit worried for it.

Highly recommend this app! I use it all the time to control my laptop from a distance when I have it hooked up via HDMI to a display. It has some pretty useful functionality.

You'd think an app named Unified Remote would support phones with IR so I could control my TV. Refunded :(

    • You can buy IR Blasters which sit on your wifi, so it will work from other rooms or even other side of the world.

They are unlikely to ever add it now, since the latest generation of phones have dumped the feature, and while there are headphone port blasters the headphone port is marked for death with next gen of Android likely to use USBC port as the headphone interface.

    • By the looks of it this app can do some IR….

      https://www.unifiedremote.com/tutorials/how-to-use-ir
      HTC One
LG G3 Transmitting and learning supported (Learned code will only work on LG G3)
Samsung devices with IR (S4, S6, Note 3, et

Problem is each phone does it differently, theres no general api for it in android…bumma really.

  • My favorite computer remote app other than teamviewer. Was going to buy the full version soon but this makes it now.

    • why not use vnc? open source and just works

      • That is only a screen viewer.
This does a lot more with specialised UI's so you arent just poking around on a zoomed in section of screen.
Plus in terms of "just works", the static/dyn DNS hassles are taken care of and generally less firewall issues.

So you have to pay 20c so you could be lazy. Neah…

  • can this control my ps3?

  • How much is it normally?

    • +1

      $5.99 or $5.49

  • Definitely recommend the app as well - once you set it up on your computer you can basically control software like VLC and Kodi, desktop apps like Netflix or a whole host of pre-configured websites (Netflix, Google Play Music, etc).

Dunno if it works with consoles or TVs—would guess not—but it does work with my Raspberry Pi so if you want you can use your tablet/phone to run your Raspbian desktop rather than a wireless keyboard/mouse combo

  • Completely worth it!

  • 1) Can it be installed on multiple devices, e.g. mobile, tablet etc..? Do you have to pay $0.20 on each device installation?
    2) Is it better to use it by signing in ?

    • You can have it on as many devices as you want as long as you use the same google account on each device which has the purchased app.

Love this app, works perfectly for Youtube and VLC.

Always using it to pause and skip ahead/back

works fine as a mouse and ok as a keyboard
