iPhone SE 64GB (Any Colour) $50/pm/24months - Unlimited Calls/Text + 4GB Data @ Virgin Mobile + $100 Credit

190

So before all the spec warriors and iPhone haters get on the blower, yes this isn't the best specced out phone, with the most RAM and an Octocore processor blah blah. What I think it is, is a pretty good deal for those who want in on the iOS environment on a budget + plan on a reasonably decent network.

If you were to buy an iPhone 64GB SE outright it would cost you $749 + SIM ONLY plan of ~$30/pm to get the equivalent inclusions on the Optus network = $1470 over 24 months. All up, including the $100 credit this deal will cost you $1100, which I think it pretty damn good.

Would seem ideal for parents who love using an iPhone but don't need the iPhone 7 features/larger screen and just want a cheap plan, or for those who simply think spending close to $100/pm is absurd.

    iPhone SE 64GB (Any Colour)

It's only for a few different colours, not 'any' colour.

saw this two weeks ago, problem is the waiting time … up to 4 weeks!

waiting time … up to 4 weeks!

The 'on hold' music isn't too bad though.

    • -1

Would only be waiting 2 weeks if you ordered it then :P

All jokes aside, I can't imagine it would take 4 weeks to source an SE 64GB. Might just be a case of under promise and over deliver because of it being a pretty good deal. They're not in near as much demand as the iPhone 7 (which has the same time frame listed).

    • Optus also discounted this phone (iPhone SE 64gb) to $50 ($40 plan, $10 handset) and have no stock. No ETA either as they don't know when Apple will supply them with stock.

If it's not an online offer, suggest you get it in-store or even better, go to an Apple store (where they're more likely to have stock) as Apple can sign you up to the various telcos.

Seems like a decent deal for an iPhone, but no iPhone deal seems worth it next to an Android.

Also, in two years planned obsolescence will see no apps work properly on your iPhone.

    PS I hate apple.

    • +1

REALLY? You hate apple? Tell me more about how android phone makers don't make new designs every year? And how there is absolutely nothing wrong with them (LG boot loop on the last 3 generations including nexus, Samsung with their note 7 fire hazard, Chinese phone makers putting dodgy apps in to 'spy' on you, the same problems for last generation phones updating to latest software (if its ever released).
Yeah, android phones are perfect. Good one.

      • +1

Who said perfect, straw man much?

And I said planned obsolescence, care to address that?

        • +1

Not saying apple are perfect, but the hardware and software rarely have issues attributed to design. And if they do, are sorted reasonably quickly. Unlike android where if Google does an update it has to be pushed to the phone manufacturer to muck about with and apply to their system and then onto the carrier to further implement and push to the customer. I have read on this page, and others, that some carriers don't sent crucial updates to get their customers phones working better, like batteries draining quickly, etc..
As for planned obsolescence, I have an iPhone 5s running the latest software 10.blah. It runs fine and all pass are still being updated. I have an iPhone 4 running 8.blah and it does well for a travel phone, has more worth to me than mizuma or cashaphone. All things have planned obsolescence, cars, fridges, even android phones. So the obsolete argument is invalid in this case. Better grow up and realise that all providers of phones, cars, home appliances have this in mind. And apple seems to support for +- 4 years after product manufacture, which is fine by me, gives me time to save for the next one.

        • Yup! The iPhone 5 ($240. Feb 2014) is only starting to slow down a little now due to the tech lagging behind (32-bit processor). iPhone 5S ($269. Dec 2016) is still performing quite well (although seems to slow down a bit in summer when it heats up). Not to mention they seem to be lasting me far longer than Androids have.

It's hard to find small Android devices these days especially at a good price. I really like the size of iPhone 5/5S/SE having come from a HTC Desire (Nexus One) ($310. Jan 2010) and not liking anything larger - Motorola Atrix (Oct 2011), Galaxy Nexus ($359. Sep 2012), etc.

        • @Test Tickles:

You were being cogent and informative until 'grow up', but as I am mature I'll overlook that.

My experience with my mum's phone is that the iPhone 4 is not compatible with the more recent operating systems, and that many aps require more recent versions of iOS. This is one of the reasons for my comment about planned obsolescence. I'll be interested to see how this develops with more recent versions of the iPhone, especially considering more powerful hardware is not really needed as much in future compared to the previous 5 years.

Apple is in a unique position to ensure old devices work due to producing a vertically integrated product. For a fair comparison, perhaps examine stock Android phones only, which have fewer of the problems in delivering updates which you mention. (Of course, the new pixel us a rip off too, so if we consider stock Android only, my argument re value starts to break down with recent additions to Google's lineup).

Android in its various forms has issues, but my perception is that greater value and greater longevity are attainable from a correctly researched product.

Thanks for your mostly informative reply.

Maybe I got a little defensive, point taken. I just know that when I start to look into android phones, I see issues arising from all different makers putting their own spin on things. I only started using apple because the hardware and software worked out of the box. When you look at apps, the devs have to create scaling for so many and varied screen sizes and resolutions and try to complement manufacturer tweaks. Having said that, yes the iPhone 4 is obsolete as far as getting updates past 8.—, but it still works ok and if I haven't deleted apps from iTunes, I can still get them to work. But as you mentioned, I cannot download some newer apps, but google maps and Facebook still work so I can get by if needed.

        • @Test Tickles:

The part about if you haven't deleted them, then you can get them to work, but you can't download them… That's what I was realising about apple.

It doesn't seem like a genuine attempt by the company to ensure longevity of their devices. Feels like planned obsolescence.

I realise other companies do this, and it is deplorable from all but a profit centred perspective.

Apple is a very profit motivated company, yes I realise all companies have a profit motive, but apple seems more perverse on this point - and I realise Google was selling the original Nexus devices as essentially no profit… But apple having the majority of profits without the majority of market cap means that essentially the user is getting stung. Hence, great products, but poor value…

Agreed that the market for Android phones in general can be a nightmare to navigate, but with the right forums, I haven't made a mistake with an Android product yet.

          Moto g
          Lenovo lemon (lol)
          Asus Zenfone 2

          If anyone was interested.

PS if you can get FB working on i4 I need to have another look at mum's phone.

        • @ozbjunkie:
I think you could bundle all sat Nav companies into the apple wagon also, lifetime maps as long as we don't make the file to big. Have a tom tom that can no longer get updates cause the memory is too small, admitted it is 6-7 years old, but all tech companies are guilty. They'll set up softer ware to do exactly that, bigger files, need dexacore processor, have 2gb graphics etc.. or just won't release to a certain model code? It's all swings n roundabouts.
And I looked through backups and have never deleted FB so that might be why it's still working ;)

        • @Test Tickles:

yep, tech going to landfill makes baby jesus cry.

i hate it when i care for a device and one day it's useless due to software 'updates' and a lack of backward compatibility.

perhaps i should just be more careless

    • What are you talking about? I have a mate who is still running an I phone 5 and it runs the latest version of iOS and all apps run on it fine.

Find me an Android phone from 2012 that is still running the latest version of Android…if anything Android has more planned obsolescence than iOS

      TLDR; You talk rubbish.
