It's always been free. Sauces included.

    • +2

I recently heard about it but never actually tried it

I must admit that the burgers taste better with all the extras added

      • +28

I must admit that the burgers taste better with all the extras added

That's the taste of FREE that's improving them

        • the taste of OzBargain freebies

      • What do you guys usually say?
Instead of listing all that ..

Do you say "Can u add extras to the burger…'

I usually say "can u add extra salad and sauce to the burger" but do get the occasional "Huh?" then I just say extra lettuce and sauce ….

        • +1

Can I have a chicken royale add tomato and onion heavy mayo

        • @Food: "heavy" ??

        • +1

@steveclassy2: Yes if you want say extra pickles, we take it as heavy pickles
And if you add stuff to the burger we put it through as heavy x but the staff know it's just add the item, if it already isn't on the burger etc

        • @Food: Ah okay; and I noticed the other day the chick said "cheeseburger, extra Condiments" thru her microphone thing too

        • @Food: The store I go to, says I can only have extra salad items that were already on the burger to begin with. Is that correct? eg. You can't get tomato if something normally only comes with lettuce.

        • @GregMonarch: Really depends on the store manager and their own doings

        • @GregMonarch: at Store's disrection

    • +1

Not always. I remember going to HJ's as a kid and it was 50c to add onions and shit.

      • +37

You added shit to your burger? Or is that what you call a turd burger?

        • +3

Thats what cost the extra 50c

    • +3

They recently charged me for sauce, I complained about it as it was alwaysbfree with a meal, think I paid 50c like Micky's.

Couldn't be bothered arguing, western suburb muppets for ya

      • +1

        western suburb

Maybe they were pocketing the change for themselves.

Do it for 100 customers and that's an easy $50 bonus for the day lol

        • +10

I'm a Rep as a Manager and I can tell you that this is normal. We used to have a promo as free nugget sauces and since then people abused the sauces and as such they cancelled free sauces and changed it to 50c. Some city stores only charge 30c though.

To add stores were told its only free if you have nuggets in your meal. Therefore purchasing a standard combo meal isnt going to get you free sauce.

        • +1

          @Gravehaunted:
This makes sense! I was wondering why HJs started charging for sauce.

        • @Gravehaunted: Wow how and why would people abuse free sauce??

        • @Gravehaunted:

When a meal is being purchased 1 sauce for free doesn't seem to me like I'm abusing the sauce. I guess any bs excuse is good enough to make more money than they already do

        • +1

@Gravehaunted: Mate, can you pass feedback on that 1x free sauce in a combo meal isn't abuse? Don't be like Maccas, you guys are (were?) better. Not just because of the jingle.

        • @Gravehaunted:

When is HJ going to sell their spicy sauces in bottles? :P

        • +1

@Gravehaunted: Now I know why I get dirty looks at the drive through when I ask for sauce at the pick up window lol

        • +1

          @Gravehaunted:
I'm glad youse got recontract with original sauces

        • +1

          @steveclassy2:

          Hey all,

First off I do reckon we should have sauce for combo meals at least at regular and large meals so ill put some feedback in on behalf of the Ozbargain committee . And so happy we have the original sauce back.

        • @Gravehaunted: 3 thumbs up from me :-)

    • So this isn't really a deal then?

  • -3

How does it make it healthier? Few more nutrients, but still all the fats/sugars of the burger.

    • +4

      It was a joke.

      • +4

        or was it?

      • Oh. Ha. Ha and so on.

    • +6

Because as you said, it has more nutrients. That definitely makes it healthier, whether healthy or not is an entirely different question.

    • Fat isn't inherently unhealthy. Not much sugar in a burger (just avoid the drinks/ice-cream)

      • +1

Saturdated fat is and if the buns are like the Maccas buns, they are full of sugar.

Look,I'm not one of those health nuts coming on here saying people shouldn't eat because it's unhealthy, I just saw the comment and took issue with it.

Hell, give me the 2x Bacon Deluxe any day of the week.

  • They use to ask, years ago of you wanted them

  • +11

+1 for the Mexican moustache above the N.

    • +1 for Mexican moustache. I can never unsee that now.

    • +2

It's a must! Otherwise, people keep pronouncing it gelaaaaaapinoze. :)

      • +1

With respect, this has nothing to do with how you pronounce the "J". It's about pronouncing the n as ny. eg:"halapen-yo"

        Adios muchachos..

  • +3

ANGRY onions used to be free to add in as it used to be under salad. Now it's 30c/50c to add :(

  • Yeah extra salad is free. Do you mean ordinary onions or angry onions? Angry onions were the best free addon.

  • +4

I add beetroot to my Whoppers all the time

    • Does that cost? Should that be added to op's post?

      • +2

Doesn't cost. Beetroot is free! And a must to a whopper!

        • Whopper no beetroot = junk food

Whopper add beetroot = hot salad roll thank you very much

  • Too bad they don't do the free onion rings in the burger anymore.

  • How much are they normally?

    • +1

normally free…… so you saved zero.

  • Are pickles free?

  • -1

Does "cage free" = "free range"?

    I'm guessing not.

  • +4

Extra salads and sauces have been free at HJs for at least the last 20 years. They aren't supposed to add free salads to hamburger or cheeseburger though as this makes it a Whopper Junior. I got them to do it once before too but the cashier got told off by the manager.

    • Likewise I've had the cashier check with the manager and the manager come tell me quite firmly and un-apologetically that it's not going to happen. It was a bit of a crappy feeling.

  • +2

I used to work at Hungry jacks like 8-9 years ago, it was always free

    • Yep! Can confirm this.

      • +2

        Username checks out

        Hungry j4ck's

        • +4

          It's true. I am hungry.

  • +3

Not available in all stores. Some HJs charge. It is up to the individual franchise.

    • The majority of HJ's in Australia are company owned stores, a much smaller number are franchised, it's only these ones who can/do apply additional charges for extra salad/mayo etc. The company owned stores never do, but I have noticed they are charging for sauce now which is disappointing.

      • That's what he said.

    • +2

Hungry Jacks Heatherton VIC charge extra. It's not much, especially when compared to McDonalds who charge 40c just for a little squirt of another sauce even though you've already taken off a few ingredients without getting anything back for those.

      • They should have the policy that Domino's has

        • which is what?

        • @The Land of Smeg: 1:1 swap. E.g. remove Pineapple and add cheese

        • +2

Remove any 2 ingredients that aren't "free" and replace with any other 2 ingredients in their place.

So basically you take a can't-make-friends pizza that contains sauce/tomato/spinach/olives/capsicum/mushrooms/onion, then you take off the onions and olives & add chicken and bacon in their place at no added cost. Now you have a can-make-friends pizza. It's also a great way to extra-meatify any other pizza at no extra cost.

        • @infinite: didn't they fix that ages ago? You can't swap just anything for chicken etc.

        • @apptrack: That's pretty cool. I didn't know that! I will certainly try Dominoes next time. That's really fair

        • @Orpheus: The old exploit was that you could replace anything for anything, unlimited times. So a cheese & 3-veg pizza could be turned into a cheese & chicken/chicken/beef pizza.

Now it's just swap 2 of any topping for meats/prawns as a limit. Many people get a supreme now days because it has pretty much everything, then take off the toppings they don't like & then just add 2 more meat choices to it. To compensate, Dominos made the addition of sauces, herbs and garnishes mostly free now as well to any pizza.

      • +2

FREE Salt, Pepper, Napkins and Straws at McDonald's.

    • What is the normal price?

  • +1

They still charge for cheese on their veggie burgers :(

  • I'm blown away by this; extras are free?!?!?! !!!!!!!!!!!

    • Only salads :o

  • +1
    1. Normal price. 'Heavy' onion, tomato etc etc have always been free.
    2. Not all stores do it for free. Some individual stores will charge you for each add on.
  • and now HJ charge for source :(

    • +4

what is your sauce on this?

      • -1

My source on sauce is HJ :)

    • Ours started to, then they gave up. Might depend whom you speak with

  • +2

Note that you can't being your own burger unfortunately.

  • +1

Didn't know this. Take my +

  • +2

I used to work at HJs. Extra salads/sauces have always been free and the limit is never actually specified. I once had an order for back when they had the chicken minis, a woman had asked for heavy 5x mayo. She sent it back several times asking for more until the mayo was about the thickness of a lego block on each side of the bun. No idea how she downed that.

    • +6

That meal must have looked like a (mod: removed) by the time the boys were finished making that.

      • +3

Never thought I would see the word (mod: removed) on OzB. Well done!

      • +1

        stay classy

    • +7

I used to work at HJ. One time a drunk guy came in and asked for a whopper with heavy mayo x 10. I put enough mayo on it to fill a small size cup, but got told off by the manager and had to remove half of it.

  • +1

Always ask for "heavy salads" really makes the burgers much more enjoyable imo.

    • +1

Alright I'm totally trying that this evening but I'm going to brace myself for a blank look, pause and then maybe "ok a whopper, a salad..anything else" repeated back to me. I'll report back

      • +2

Ok firstly they did respond to the request for heavy salads like they knew what I meant so I was wrong on that one however I got carried away and totally played myself and unozbargained the whole damn meal.

So I asked the cashier if they do the 'free salads added to burgers thing' and she said yes. So I used the 2x bacon deluxe burger voucher "with heavy salads on both" and got a large angry onions. The cashier turned to the manager and was like "2 bacon deluxe with heavy salads" and he said something about "lettuce and tomato" and I really should have intervened there but I just thought "well lets wait and see, don't be awkward about this". I took my meal home and geeze…'heavy' is the wrong word. On both burgers there was more lettuce, for sure, not a lot by any means. One burger had two small slices of tomato which made me say "hey come on" and the other burger had two normal slices of tomato which ..that's not 'heavy' either. Double salad would be a better term for it.

So in doing so I didn't get onion or jalapenos and I don't know if I've ever had a bacon deluxe burger before but it's entirely possible because these two were so freaking unmemorable. They tasted like NOTHING. Or I should say IT tasted like nothing because after my full price angry onions (they were great though) and the one bland as anything bacond deluxe burger I lost my appetite for the second burger.

Stupid stupid. I should have done what op suggested and just bought the angry onions.

        • +2

When you ask for "Heavy Salads" on a burger, I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be 1.5x of the original amount, except tomatoes (cannot be halved). If you wanted Jalapenos & onions, you needed to explicitly state so as they only add to what is already on it (STD Bacon Deluxe is only Lettuce and 1 Tomato).

        • Yeah I understand all that. Still it's a bit of a misnomer

  • +2

I posted a very similar deal to this regarding exploiting the free extras for the relatively new 'Create Your Taste' burgers from McDonald's. However I was told that it wasn't a deal and it was subsequently moved to forums: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/228998

Interesting that this is considered a deal, but mine wasn't..

    • +2

Exactly right. It's not a deal at all, nor should it be considered free. These should be viewed as courteous.
