Samsung LS34E790CNS 34" UltraWide 21:9 (3440x1440) Curved Monitor: $799 @ MSY (Instore and Online)

390

If you're in the market for a 34" Ultrawide monitor this deal is pretty good and cheaper than the price you'd have paid if you got one during some of the 20% off eBay sales (e.g. Futu $1199 - 20% = $959). Personally I've not researched this particular model, but the current cheapest is $949 on StaticIce.

I've linked to the gif of the deal but can confirm the price is showing online, e.g. http://www.msy.com.au/qldonline/monitors/16359-samsung-34-ls… and showing stock at most stores.

$10 more than the last time this was on special

  • I have the AOC 3440 x 1440, beautiful monitor and from everything I've heard the curved ones are much nicer. Great price for a somewhat niche product.

For the record, I'm running a GTX 1070 and get top settings and 60fps on most games with some drops (Witcher 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider most recently, stable 60 with a few drops in busy scenes).

My old AMD HD 7970 was in struggle town though, so be aware if you have an older or lower end card you'll end up shelling out for something higher end sooner or later.

Great for photo editing as well.

    • Rise of the Tomb Raider

I was averaging about 40 FPS with everything at maximum using 1920x1080 with a GTX 1070 in the Geothermal Valley areas of Tombraider.

    • Have the AOC 3440x1440 ultrawide too. At first I thought it would be decent for gaming. Played a lot of action and FPS. Then thought something was off. I couldn't play as well as I usually did. Game generally felt sluggish despite running around 60 fps. Then I found out the input lag on this monitor is horrendous (around 50 ms). Unfortunately, I am now forced to bring out my old 21" panel just to game properly nowadays. DON'T mistaken response time with input lag. Other than gaming, it is great for working, photo editing, movie watching, etc.

Was wondering if this Samsung ultrawide has gaming-friendly input lag.

VA panel, 5ms response time, 60Hz. Not quite as nice as the LG IPS panels and no 100+Hz or Freesync/Gsync, but for $799 it's a really good deal.

    • Agreed on image quality. Had the LG and had it replaced twice figuring third time lucky, after that one died I got the samsung on deal here and have been happy. Paid significantly more than $799 and don't regret it.

      • did you get from Umart and do a review on this monitor.. ?

        • Negative - I'm from WA.

    • +2

Slightly worse colour reproduction but much better contrast should give VA panels the edge over IPS as far as image quality.

  • Once you go Ultra Wide you'll never go back. Best thing ever, great price. Yeah it's not an IPS 100hz, but it's half the price.

  • Bought one today. My previous one is a 29" LG 16:9 IPS 1080p. I don't mind the 60Hz, as its the same as my previous one which I play games on occasionally, the bigger wide screen is very nice. But for watching movies it is super great with the deep blacks.

  • Really happy to see these are coming into vogue but no 100hz is a deal breaker for me. Still great deal though.

Interesting file name choice by MSY.

OT: Thinking of picking this up pending finding reviews.

    • I literally laughed out loud when I went to copy the link.

  • I bought an ultrawide for a week and went back to the standard 16:9.
I just could not justify the absurd amount of horizontal screen real estate for its price range.

    Pros:

    • screen real estate - great for photo/video/audio editors
    • no more bezels down the middle (from multi-screens)
    • bragging rights

    Cons:

    • I literally have to turn my head any time I want to see any content close to the sides of the screen
    • efficiently managing that screen real estate
    • lack of native content
    • expensive (price per pixel)
    • not all games support 21:9. If they do it's generally cropped to fit the 21:9 aspect ratio
    • I've had two ultra-wides used only for games. Sold the first one because it was too small (29 inch)

I basically only play Overwatch, CS:GO and Rocket League, and they all have 21:9 support so I guess I'm lucky!

I can sort of understand your gripes with productivity as there is a bit of head-turning going on when I need to browse or email something.

I still wouldn't go back to a small 16:9 screen

      • Yeah I couldn't go back to low res so I exchanged the ultrawide for a 27" 4k monitor :)

  • +1

Lol MSY. Not after last time.

  • The 27" ($440) seems much better value?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/289916

    • +1

Twice as many raw pixels, sure, but these monitors are about aspect ratio rather than overall resolution. 3840x2160 is a 16:9 ratio, as opposed to the 21:9 of an UltraWide.

So you're paying extra because it's a niche product with special features.

      • I almost bought a X34 in December for $1299

For an additional 220mm of horizontal space it seemed like a big waste of money, yes I know you get Gsync and 100Hz but what you're really getting is a 60Hz panel that can be overclocked to 100hz. You also don't get a flawless product. The X34 has had its fair share of issues, Scanlines, BLB, IPS Glow, DP1.2, HDMI 1.4, Cheap materials…this ultimately was the deciding factor for me. When Acer announced they would go 1900R in the X34P I lost all hope in 21:9 34" Gsync monitors. I would love the extra real estate but I can't justify the hype/gimic premium. Acer & Asus are making massive profits on a almost perfect product.

        • For an additional 220mm of horizontal space it seemed like a big waste of money,

Not sure why you're picking at that. If you do not have it then it isn't giving you the sense of immersion and situational that you bought an ultrawide monitor for and you have a normal boring monitor.

yes I know you get Gsync and 100Hz but what you're really getting is a 60Hz panel that can be overclocked to 100hz.

So you think 100Hz is less legitimate than another 100Hz because it was overclocked. I can assure you it looks the same.

          IPS Glow, DP1.2, HDMI 1.4

Those are not flaws. IPS glow is inherent to IPS screens. No idea why you think interfaces that deliver what the monitor is capable of are flaws. Please explain to me the point of putting DP 1.3 or HDMI 2.0 on a monitor when it does nothing at all if you are going to list that as a flaw. What specifically is the flaw that you think is being fixed here.

        • @Diji1: Not sure why you're picking at that. If you do not have it then it isn't giving you the sense of immersion and situational that you bought an ultrawide monitor for and you have a normal boring monitor.

Easy, a 27" U2715H cost me $600, to gain an additional 220mm with GSync/100Hz it will cost me 110% more of what I paid for 27"
The term boring is subjective. UW is great but it's not worth what they charge…well only to suckers who buy them at that price point.

@Diji1: So you think 100Hz is less legitimate than another 100Hz because it was overclocked. I can assure you it looks the same.

Overclocking is not the way hardware is designed to operate. A native Hz is always better than a Overclocked 60hz panel which you probably only going to get 95Hz from anyway (another flaw of the X34)

@Diji1: Those are not flaws. IPS glow is inherent to IPS screens.

I will agree with you here. BLB is a flaw though and only too common in GSync IPS Panels

I understand you own a X34 and are defending it. If you're happy than that's all that matters.

      • Furthermore, 4k on a 27" monitor is pretty hard to read, especially if your monitor is further than like 1.5m as such larger screens are generally better (IMO) for 4K (you also have to scale on smaller monitors, half defeating the purpose)

  • I bought one yesterday and bf1 looks amazing on this thing.

I was worried that my R9 390 couldnt cope at highest settings but its going great (sitting at 80 deg). Will be great in winter as I wont need a heater lol.

Am glad I didnt go for a 4k monitor as im sure I would be buying a gtx 1080 to go with it.

I'd like to see the 34" 1080p screen on special again. Now that was a deal!

  • +1

bought one just now, THanks OP!

  • Looking for some advise. I just got a Surface book for work and realised cant connect two monitors to it (Shame Shame MS). Need the real estate of two adjacent monitors for most of my work & I feel this would provide me just that. Thoughts? (Not for gaming/video)

  • +1

i've been using this monitor for almost a year now and it is pretty good although it caps at 60fps on overwatch.
    since overwatch supports ultrawide now!

also have my PS4 hooked into as and sometimes use PiP to use as 2 seperate screens.

would like to see a remote control for these type of monitors as the dial behind the monitor is very hard to reach especially when switching input sources.

  • this monitor is still $979 on MSY website, how can I order it on 799, do i need a voucher code or something?

    • +1

Hmmmm, very interesting. The ad is still showing on their homepage but when you click the ad the promo link is saying $979. There's also 2 other Samsung monitors on special (according to the ad carousel) but they're showing at the regular price too. Could be an error with their web store, might be worth phoning them. The ad specifically says it's until 4th Feb or while stocks last, and the stores show stock.

Then again, it's MSY. Not exactly known for their reputable behaviour.

    • Same issue on this side, added it to my cart last night. This morning its 979. Phoned the help desk and asked (complained), they said i must email the online email address. Will provide an update when I get a response.

        Feedback from MSY

        Sorry about the mistake.

The price will be back to promotional price in about 5 mins. Please try again later.

Feel free to contact us if you would like further assistance.

        • Can confirm it's back to the promotional price. Thanks for following up. :)

  • Do you think the deal is available on Saturday? I always get confused of what it means to say "to Saturday"

    • +1

I would read that as inclusive of Saturday. Given that most of their stores are closed on Sunday it would make sense for the deal to run until Saturday COB.

      • Cheers!

  • Got this monitor from Harvey Norman a year ago for $1400 and I love it, immersion when gaming is glorious.. could never go back to 16:9. Definitely recommend for $800
