  • Which is how much? For normal money?

The going rate is $0.01 per point. So 50k would be $500. Better off purchasing here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/290378. Try a price match with Myer. Unless heathy wants to let it go on a cheaper price in terms of $.

That link is for QC25. Am I missing something?

I'm not sure whether you mean earn or spend but I feel the baseline for a QFF point is around ~0.6c given this is what most of the gift cards tend to be processed at. Sure, you can get better value on certain items or using it for flight upgrades, but that depends on individual usage.

However, for people who would otherwise use their points on a gift card redemption this is reasonable value given 51849 pts @ 0.6c = $311.10

So if you were going to use it on gift cards, you'd be better off pointing the QC35s for resale (this does take work though).

        • Woww… too cheap!

There's a market where people trade points for $. And it's normally going at $0.01 per point that you can purchase it for. So for me, 50k points is worth $500 in monetary terms.

@Xiaoyer: Yeah. Also against the T&Cs for QFF pretty sure. It's unlikely you'll ever get caught but on the off chance I suppose?

        • @Xiaoyer:
Now that is expensive, why do they want to trade with 0.01

        • @Yoz: it is against T&Cs and I've heard that a few people have been caught and had their accounts closed. I'm not saying that I partake in these trades but I'm just aware of their market value and I value my points accordingly.

@reon: it is when you're using points to redeem for stuff at the store. However, it's really cheap when you use them for fights. Last time I checked, 600k + points for return trip to U.K. In business class for 2 (not including taxes). A quick search for equivalent in monetary terms yields about $21k+. So…purchase points at $0.01 = $6k+ plus taxes is much cheaper.

        • @Xiaoyer: Sure. I value my points at 1c or higher on the basis that they can be used for Business Class RTW but there's plenty of people out there that would take 2x Jetstar flights over 1x Full Service Business because their primary goal is to get to the destination and they're gonna fall asleep on the plane anyway.

For these people, actual flights will almost never be worth more as QFF economy points + fuel is going to work out pretty dismally when comparing to a Jetstar/AirAsia flight.

@Yoz: hey bud. You probably need to chill. I was just showing my point of view why 1c is not really expensive with the illustrations of a business class return trip to the UK.

You seem worked up. Why are you worked up?

        • @Xiaoyer: Huh? I'm not worked up at all. Neither of us are going to purchase this deal but I was just highlighting that there's value in this for people who don't see any value in flying business class; and don't want to sell their points black market style?

$399.20 @ Apollo Hi-fi(apollohifi.com.au) , plus I had no issue price matching at Myer to get Myer One points plus no delivery cost."

  • Is it better to buy these with part points part payment?

65,000 points gives you a business class flight to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific. I imagine this flight is worth $2k or $3k. I would rather spend my points on business class flights like this then saving a few hundred bucks on headphones. Surely Ozbargain should be about finding a bargain as well as maximizing value!

    • Yeah if you can find biz class seats. Most of them are premium economy these days

      • +3

Finding Qantas business seats is difficult, I agree. Finding Cathay Pacific seats using your Qantas points however is much much easier. They have a whole lot of availability.

      • +1

Most of the time you can fly there via business but return is always economy.

    • +1

It's misleading to say 65k point will let you fly business class to HK.
You are looking at around an extra $400 in taxes.

      • +1

$400 out of pocket expenses for a Biz Class seat is still not to be sneezed at.

        • +1

I agree if you fancy business class seats, i personally don't care.

      • +4

Just had a look to see.

MEL-HK on Cathay: 65000 points + $121.35 taxes and fees.
Same flight $3652.35 from Cathay site.

        • Is that one way? So double the amount (130,000 points + $242 taxes and fees) for return?

        • +1

@Innamura: Yep above is one way.

Return: 130,000 points + $242.95 taxes and fees.
Comparing the same return flight if buying from Cathay: $5675.95

        • @unco: Thank you very much sir. Was hoping to buy two return tickets but looks like it's not happening..

    • Cathay is about $5K to HGK return in J (bus, Class)

QFF points are worth one cent each.
