  • Free with Optus internet plans and most people don't even use it.
Probably better value to get a Chromecast.

    • +10

This is a PVR, not really comparable to a Chromecast.

      • +1

Exactly, not comparable. And as I stated, "if it suits your needs". Also Sate Optus are probably now giving the Mighty version, hey! tell the people you know that don't even use it to PM us here at ozbargain and share. I'd love to get a freebie. Then again there is something I read a while ago, that this Optus provide units may be somehow locked… doesn't make sense but anyway.

        • Confirm, I have one and don't use it.
You are welcome to buy it from me for less than $268.

        • @BluBoy:

Free, including postage is less than $268 💩

        • @BluBoy:

why don't you use it? I have one, it's quite good.

        • @outlander:

Not enough interesting content on it. I was more likely to use another online service for content.
Hasn't been plugged in since I moved the TV. Did think about it for EPL though.

    • +1

This is not the version that you get free with Optus. It's the Mighty which is far higher spec. I have one and it's pretty amazing most of the time. It's super fast and the interface is really good. The main downside is that it permanently runs very hot even when on stand by. So I've had it switched off when I'm not using it for the last few weeks.

One very important thing to note. If you buy it outright then you can't get Optus Sport for the English Premier league. That only comes with Optus boxes.

      • This is the same as the Optus one. It's not the Mighty.

        • I stated it's not the mighty in the description.

    • Fetch is good for news channels, sport and some travel channels. Home DIY if you're into that type of thing.

  • Toppy going bust? Sad. Have my first one (no HD support) in the garage, the HD version in the bedroom, still going strong. We got the Fetch over a year ago and it was absolutely awful initially but is now pretty good. Over the wire update….

    • Sadly gone into receivership in Aus. Read somewhere it may be resurrected back in Korea, but who knows, and if they'll return to Oz.

  • can hdd be swapped out?

I've been using a dvico tvix pvr since late 2010 which has a 30 second tool free changeover but it won't last forever. would be good to have spare

    • My divco TVIX died a while ago.. it was the best damned device I've ever had. and I've had quite a few.
Loved it to bits… :-( so sad they closed shop.

  • I have the first gen FetchTV with my Adam Internet account which is beginning to stutter. Can I just unplug it and swap this in and it'll work? Don't want too much messing around.

  • Does this have to have a subscription for free to air, and YouTube etc?

    • No it does not, just the initial $1.00 Activation fee. Includes 3 movie rental credits for new customers. Valid for 60 days from activation of Fetch TV service.

  • As far as I know the optus unit can't be used standalone - you need to have an optus account for it to work.
Also I don't think you can swap the hdd for a larger one.
There is a big thread on Whirlpool about it.

    • Well.. for my box, it was sent to me with an accompanying text containing a code that had to be entered. Once entered, I'm pretty sure the box can used on any service, but you wouldn't want to sell it to a stranger because any movies purchased are added to the monthly bill :S

  • If u have one with Optus can you just add a second one outright?

    • Yes, but won't have the EPL as your Optus supplied one.

    • I've done a bit of research as I am in the same boat. My understanding is that you can set it up and use it but it is totally separate from any existing Optus box. I have just purchased one as I need a new PVR as my existing beyonwiz is dying and I no longer have a decent epg.

      • Exactly. People keep confusing themselves and comparing to optus becauseOptus give them away with 'some' of their plans, not all unlike what Sage's earlier comment suggests.

How do you find it so far, do you recommend it?

      • But will it work with my Optus entertainment package (MTV, e, etc)

  • To be clear, when I said I have just bought one - that was a literal comment. I am still awaiting delivery. As for my experience with the unit from Optus - I think it is a very polished unit. The integration with Netflix and online FTA rewind TV etc is very well done. I can easily access my
NAS for stored media though Plex integration would certainly be welcome. The entertainment package gets a bit of use, particularly from the kids.

    • Cheers for that. I actually plan to use it as a PVR predominantly if not entirely, if I buy it. I am one of those rare beings that don't have Foxtel or a streaming service account.

  • I got given one with my Optus broadband plan, and didn't use it. Changed plans since, and asked them if I need to return it, they said don't worry about it, just keep it. Lol!

I used to work for fetchTV back in the day, when they first joined forced with Optus. It isn't bad for what it is and the firmware has improved a lot. The hardware as well, since they changed suppliers.

If I were keeping my TV, I'd give it another go
