I'm after a mechanical keyboard ….Is this the sweetest deal at the moment ?

    • Decent price. I bought mine from MSY a few months ago for $157. It's a nice keybooard, I find the Cherry MX Brown's clicky sound is quite loud.

      • +1

i have the MX silent .. and they are no where near silent .. after using this keyboard… i still dont understands peopless obsessions with mechanical …

        • Totally agree. I also bought a Logitech G610 Cherry MX Brown for my work where I do a lot of typing.
I still feel this mechanical keyboard idea is a marketing over-hype. Not really worth the price premium over traditional membrane keyboards.

      • I've got a MX Browns as well. I find the switches themselves aren't particularly loud, the loudness comes purely from the keys bottoming out. And I would imagine that would be the case for any MX switches, the only way to reduce that noise is to add the rubber rings to cushion the impact.

      • MX Browns ARE quiet … compared to Blues/Blacks, but they aren't silent by any means.

Some of it comes down to typing style - my colleague bashes his laptop keys so hard you'd think it was a typewriter. I can type quieter on MX Blues!

      • Clicky as in when the key actuates? Or when the key hits the bottom of its travel path?

    • -2

      No.

      https://ebgames.com.au/pc-162229-Logitech-G710-Mechanical-Ga…

Macro keys, dedicated media keys, cheaper.

      You're welcome.

      • Not RGB, weak keycaps due to orings

        • I'll take media and macro keys over RGB, any day, and I don't know what you're on about with "weal keycaps". I've had my G710+ for over three years, all my keys are fine.

        • @O15: RGB is valued more to others.

        • @shot: but also less to others… but I agree, if you're gonna spend the money, at least try a dedicated mech keyboard manufacturer.

        • @mit: A dedicated keyboard manufacturer sells less keyboards and thus has to charge more for each one. Just saying.

  • I had one of these briefly. Honestly I thought it was garbage compared to the Ducky mechanical keyboards I've had. Keys were wobbly and plasticky, and the aesthetics/RGB are just not for me. If you're into the RGB, however, maybe. It probably has the best lighting effects of any keyboard I've seen.

  • I want the Corsair K65 on sale as I want a smaller tenkeyless keyboard.

    Any other suggestions?

I currently use an Aorus K7 Thunder which is a TKL keyboard with a detachable mechanical "macropad" numberpad which can be connected independently via USB from the keyboard (so you can use it with other keyboards if desired) and can be programmed with up to 100 macros. The number pad can also be connected on either side of the TKL keyboard so it can be like a normal full size layout if desired or it can be on the other side of the keyboard as well. It has a handy volume and brightness "mouse wheels" so you can adjust brightness and volume including turning them off.

I like this keyboard very much however if the number pad is attached to the keyboard itself it loses power very easily if the keyboard moves: if you are OCD it will annoy the **** out of you. It also happens mid-game at times which is TERRIBLE. I decided that it was too much trouble to have it attached in the end. I have seen this mentioned in reviews so i suspect it's not a issue with just mine. If you are buying it expecting to have a full size keyboard then don't.

You can also buy the K7 Thunder without the macropad - it is sold as the Aorus K3. I picked the K7 for $90, I have seen the K3 for as low as $60 which is a bargain IMO.

Aorus (if you don't know) is Gigabytes "premium" er "gaming" brand. These keyboards only come in blue backlit Cherry MX Red.

      • Where can I get Aorus keyboards from?

      • Thanks diji1 I will have a look.

    • corsair K65 rapidfire is the most comfortable keyboard i have ever owned. expensive but well worth the $ imho

    • I use the cooler Master quick fire TK, and I reckon it's great (as long as you don't mind using NumLock to switch between arrow keys and the numpad, which can be annoying if doing lots of spreadsheet work).

The k65 was the other one I was looking at.

The Ducky keyboard post seems to be the better option.

I bought this from an old shopping express trifecta deal in Nov 2015 with added 11.60 shipping:

QTY UNIT CODE NAME UNIT PRICE DISCOUNTS TAX SUBTOTAL
    1 ea CH-9000094-NA Corsair Strafe RGB Mechanical Keyboard Brown MX $199.00 $58.00 10.00% $141.00
    1 ea 980-001204 Logitech Z333 Multimedia Speakers $99.00 $52.00 10.00% $47.00
    1 ea F7D4550AU Belkin ScreenLink 4 AV Adapter $99.95 $88.95 10.00% $11.00

The K## has a brushed aluminium frame/surface and a volume wheel+media controls (I use this a lot on the k95) but you can get away with the Fn Key + Function Keys for volume/media control on the Strafe. IIRC these were released as a slightly cheaper alternative to the K##s.

Another bonus was that Corsair fixed their first bungled RGB release as the LED controller from the first generation of K## RGB keyboards was only capable of 8 steps/levels of lighting Red,Green,Blue = 512 colours (meant that you could see the steps on the colour gradients previously) against the now 256x256x256 = 16.8million. Their lighting software is excellent at achieving practically any effect you can think of (check out uploaded RGB profiles).

If you ever intend to change out or replace keycaps, make sure the keycap set comes with extra keys for a different sized bottom row as IIRC the bottom row should be non-standard.

  • Anyone can recommend a good silent keyboard with macro keys and media keys? Doesn't have to be mechanical. My G110 is dying and every 1/2hr it will sudden stick and start repeating the last pressed key. Have to unplug and plug to fix. Chroma v2 yellow looks nice but it doesn't have dedicated media keys.

I'm currently using the Silent version (http://www.corsair.com/en-au/strafe-rgb-mechanical-gaming-ke…) of this keyboard now at work. Was looking for a mechanical keyboard that is not too loud. This keyboard fits the bill. Its based on the cherry Reds but quitter than that even.

Only advice would be its bit softer to type, sometimes I have my finger on a key and not realise it until I see trailing spaces in my word document. I was contemplating the Coarsair Silent RGB to the G610 (cherry Browns). I got the Silent because apparently the G610 requires the software to be installed on the PC you're using. My work doesn't allow non approved software. And the default 'lighting' profile was not what I was after. Mind you the Silent you can program it at home before bringing it to work, without using the Corsair software. The default lighting profile for the Corsair is I kid you not, RGB spiral going round and round, sorta like a whirlpool. Don't think that would fly very well at work!!

  • Is there any wireless mechanical keyboard?

    • +1

yeh, look up filco minila (67keys) or varmilo vb87m (87keys) from memory

Quick google and /r/mechanicalkeyboards wiki will sort you out though

      • Thanks. I saw that link previously, but somehow I'm not familiar with any of the manufacturer

        • +1

They are specialist keyboard producers are not a gaming brand, which is why you might not have heard of it.

  • I saw that the K70 RGB with Brown keys is only $40 more than this. Is the aluminum body worth the extra 40?

    • I was going to ask similar? I used a K70 in-store somewhere and liked it a lot… Would this be more or less the same?

      • +1

Yeah innards are probably very similar, just the aluminium top + volume wheel and media keys on the top right

IF you go for the K70, make sure to get the latest versions of the RGB with updated lighting controller (looks like different font for keycaps and usb slot for usb passthrough). They should be Rapidfire and LUX models - Rapidfire have different switches (something about the actuation point being higher so the key input is registered sooner) and LUX come in 3 types of switches.

        • Thanks for the reply. Definitely did not know about the lighting in the newer models. So I assume this one is the older model without the USB passthrough and updated lighting.

        • +1

          @Matt2017:

Yep, looks like only futu has the Rapidfire with cherry mx speed switches up for sale ~199

edit: seems like a pretty standard retail price
