Parrot MiniDrones Jumping Night EVO Drone - Marshall $104.30 (RRP $290) @ JB Hi-Fi

80

I've looked online and this seems to be a pretty good price for this; particularly for a bricks and mortar store. I don't know what the availability is but there were a couple at the Bourke St store this morning.

You can get it a few dollars cheaper by going to Zavvi but then you have to wait for it to be shipped and Zavvi don't have a clean record for delivery

I bought one of these at $149 from JB and they are great fun; particularly if you tie a bit of string to the back and let the cat chase it around the house; they have an inbuilt camera so this the pictures can be hilarious. The little wheel at the back can catch on things so my other half made a sled bit out of plastic and it seems to work better with that; however, it does screw up the jumping bit. You can also deal with the snags by putting it in two wheel balancing mode and going slow over them.

I've included a troubleshoot website that includes the best way to do the initial software update.

It is also its own unsecured hot spot so be aware that people could take it over if they wanted to and it does have a camera. Just make sure it is powered down when you don't use it.

I hope this helps someone. I'm happy to answer questions, welcome constructive input and will be ignoring the snarkers.

  • How do you think it compares to the Mavic?

    • +1

I haven't used the Mavic, but other people might be able to answer that.

Its like comparing Sonys latest 4k with a 1080p Soniq.

      • I would say more like a 8k Sony TV to whatever the display is on an Apple watch.

        • +2

          Something like this

    • +1

Not sure your serious? This is a basically a car, the Mavic is an aerial drone.

  • It is also its own unsecured hot spot so be aware that people could take it over if they wanted to…

Think I'd rather spend a few $$ more for some more security around this

    • +1

That is why I raised it. Although it seems to close down quickly, and it is easy to powerdown, so I don't see it as a big problem, but I feel people needed to be warned.

      • It pays to read into it more before I comment also. Thought this actually flies, so I guess the lack of security isn't such a big deal.

Had visions of it out flying and someone stealing it mid-flight.

OMG that is something to keep in mind if you buy a flying drone; hadn't thought of that. However, I would presume that you can't hijack the control of a drone once people have paired with it, an interesting discussion point though. The car doesn't go that fast but I can see a Benny Hill sketch happening where I'm chasing someone who has hijacked my car at the park. My point was more around that people could use the camera to see inside your house.

  • FYI looks nothing like a parrot.

  • The Jumping Race is on special too for $118 - goes at double the speed but doesn't have the LED lights at the front it seems. Hmm, what to do?

    • +2

Think about where you intend to run it, do you have the ability to control twice the speed or is it just going to be a lot of crashing into things.

      • Great point. I plan to use it in the house and outdoors. Thanks!

Used one in watch dogs 2 so wouldn't mind a real one

  • I found this thing pretty responsive and the kitties aren't too phased when we bump into them at low speeds, unavoidable sometimes as they run past and then stop suddenly. You can drive them from the image on the camera using your iphone/ipad/etc so you can hoon around the house without having a line of sight visual. It is not a great all terrain vehicle, I hoped to use this to do under the house inspections but it gets bogged to easily in the uneven dirt under my house. I'm now looking for a RC rock crawlerwe can put this, or a camera on, so would be grateful for suggestion.

I was wondering what people would actually use this for.

      My imagination was running wild for a few minutes;

      Up-skirts, Up-pants, Up-other stuff………..

What other uses could they have?

      • won't work because of the location of the camera and it isn't exactly silent when running. It does make a great cat toy with a string attached.
