A few decent specials from MSY this week

The Linksys EA6900 is a great router and cheaper option than the ASUS RT-AC68U. The ASUS is a better router but you won't find a better router available around this price point

5m Display port to DVI Cable $4
Steelseries Kinzu V3 Mouse $27
23-99cm Selfie Stick $2*

The Kinzu v3 is $23 at EB Games at the moment: https://ebgames.com.au/pc-205770-SteelSeries-Kinzu-V3-Optica…

Only 4 stores in Australia have stock

  • Does anyone find clicking the MSY promotion image brings you to an incorrect items page?

    • I can only assume the page will be updated sometime in the morning

  • If anybody is interested the EA6900 does support dd-wrt, but with some issues.

  • Memory Card shipping fee = Auspost Standard shipping charge $13.21 (tax incl.)

Does not sound very standard to me (express post with insurance is cheaper!), especially as we are already paying $1.22 for a handling fee…

  • how fast is the Samsung 128 GB evo?
I suppose it's a great card for a tablet, even if it is slow

  • I am in the market for either a router+modem in one unit (like ASUS DSL AC68u), or a modem and router as separate units like this Linksys AC6900 with a modem.

Anybody with the know how willing to help me with a recommendation if I go with the Linksys AC6900 as a better deal?

Firstly I think you mean Linksys EA6900 router, not the AC6900 wireless dongle

The ASUS DSL-AC68U is a great modem/router (I own one of these) but very pricey at $290-300. It also rarely dips in price too much. Its equivalent router RT-AC68U (no modem) sells at around $220-230. These can sometimes be picked up cheaper than $200 (Ebay 20% sales). Buying the DSL version is going to set you back $70-100 more. Both devices are NBN compatible. The Linksys is cheaper and also NBN compatible

Knowing what type of NBN you get the future will greatly help making better recommendations. However, I will attempt to make some useful points below.

      HFC
No modem is required. Just a router which connects to a NBN connection box
This means if you end up buying a DSL-AC68U and switch to NBN soon you could end up paying $70+ more for a modem that won't be used anymore
Using your existing ADSL modem/router in bridge mode and connecting it to a standalone router like the RT-AC68U or EA6900 would be a much better option

      FTTN/FTTN/FTTB
These do require a modem. The DSL-AC68U will continue to work as an all-in-one device if setup correctly
However if you end up having modem issues your RSP will provide no support the ASUS. This can cause a lot of troubleshooting issues
It would generally be better to use the RSP supplied modem in bridge mode and then connect your router of choice

      Recommendation/s
I imagine you already have an ADSL modem/router. I personally would put this in bridge mode and then connect it either to the RT-AC68U or EA6900. Not only would it save you money but you would continue to have your ISP/RSP full support if you happen to run into issues.

The RT-AC68U in my opinion is better router than the EA6900. But is it worth the extra dollars? The EA6900 is still definitely a great router. And please don't think I'm trying to be a dick but if you are having to ask for a recommendation which one, then the answer is probably an outright no. So go the Linksys. However, if the extra money is not an issue then by all means go the ASUS RT-AC68U.

Either way as much as I like my DSL-AC68U I think it may be best to use your existing modem/router in bridge mode and connect it to a good router. Another good point is the DSL-AC68U is an awesome modem for ADSL when close to the exchange but as distance increases there is better modem options available.

Having a good router on NBN is far more important than having a good modem
