35 posts and you don't put the deal and the price in the title?

    • +5

Modified the title to include the Zelda deal specifically, hope that's an improvement.

      • It definitely is. Good work OP!

I've been playing Zelda BotW for the last three days and it's amazing. It takes a bit of an initial time investment to fully realise how great the game is…. But damn, it really is something special. Everyone should avoid spoilers to the best of their ability for this game and experience it for themselves. Extremely highly recommended. Happy Zelda day everyone.

  • +6

    for $519

    Wow, that's expensive… I think I'll wait until later in the year…

    • +10

I'll probably wait myself and just play Zelda on my Wii U, but this is the best price for a console and game combo that I have seen for launch.

    • +8

Good luck with that. Nintendo barely drop the price on their products, you're just gonna have to wait until an ebay 20% off when the prices aren't jacked up.

      • -8

Nintendo barely drop the price on their products

        Wii U prices dropped quite a bit…

        • Only on the basic console.

        • +4

You mean that ONE time that kmart sold the mario kart bundle at the basic console price? Yeah, that was a mistake which they offered.

        • +3

          @KLoNe:
Who remembers the 3DS Ambassador program given to people who bought the console early and paid too much
We were given 10 free games

        • +1

@thelastnoob: and who remembers that the original 3ds had a design flaw with the clam shell design causing the screens to scratch each other?

This never happened with the DS lineup.

        • @KLoNe: They need to make the same mistakes again…….

        • @durd0008: I got a premium bundle for like half price less than a year ago

        • +1

@KLoNe: that was the best deal possible - however during the same time period some retailers sold the 8GB model for $175. I picked one up for that price - so Nintendo stock can get really low. It is just unlikely as the Wii U was such a stinker most retailers decided to clear their stock to get out of the Wii U business.

I can imagine the same thing happening to the Switch, but it won't happen in the next four years

        • @x853:
Yeah I bought the same bundle from target. I preferred the white model anyway and have a 1TB external attached.

Great console, Zelda runs like trash but it's an amazing game.

        • @KLoNe: Zelda runs like trash? so the frame rate is very bad? or graphic sucks?

        • @wtfnodeal: Both! :)

        • @KLoNe: shit. Was thinking to pick it up after work today. Is it not worth $79?

        • @KLoNe:

Not sure where you got that from. Seems to run decent, and apparently it runs fine on Wii U,

sounds like hearsay from clickbaiters maybe?

Its possible it has some frame drops, sure,

But trash? From what i've seen launch footage shows nothing like that,

Compared to whats been released at times this gen, i doubt its anything on that level.

        • @BNN: so the graphic is at PS3 level and worth $79?

        • @BNN: Like I said, I am more than happy with it. But, it doesn't look good at all. The frame rate when going into town is 15-20fps. Does it bother me, absolutely not. Does it run/look like trash? YES

@wtfnodeal: Yes, definitely pick it up over the Switch version. You've seen the reviews, this game is better than OoT, it's maybe the best game ever made. When they do a remaster for the Switch 2, it will be insane! But until then, save your Switch $$$'s until this Xmas when lots more games are out and announced; right now the Switch 'console' sounds really half-assed in terms of OS/Bugs/Online etc.

The weirdest thing is; you can play 99% of the game with the Pro Controller (my preferred), but when you enter a name for your horse, you have to change to the Wii U GamePad. WTF Nintendo?!

        • @KLoNe:

I wouldnt say the visuals look bad at all, its cell shaded and looks quite nice. One of the better looking games due to its art style.

As much as i hate reviews, a quick scroll in google clickbait news feeds seems to suggest mild slowdown with weapon changes and some field areas.

You must be a PC gamer if you can honestly see the exact 15-20 fps maybe. I dunno. I wouldnt consider momentary examples as trash. Lol.

I cant see any footage of that at the moment in final footage,

but i could see framerate rate drops to 20 happening potentially in some areas, given the scope, open world nature of the game. Maybe 15.

Anyways, i play for fun, i dont really care for the spec side as much as long as the game is very playable, which seems to be the case.

        • @BNN: I own the game, so… I'm not sure whether you're trying to argue or agree with me, but… ok :)

        • @KLoNe:

Agreeing with some fps stuff, disagreeing with the look stuff and performance. Happy gaming.

      • +1

Second hand titles are the way to go.

    • +3

This is Nintendo we are talking about, price will barely be different in a years time.

      • +2

I could see them doing some official bundles around Xmas time, perhaps with 1-2 switch and maybe a GOTY edition of zelda with the DLC included.

        • +2

I mean 1-2 Switch should have been bundled anyway and will be in the bargain bin soon and then some Zelda DLC. Doesn't seem worth waiting the best part of a year and risk getting Zelda spoiled or something.

        • +10

@AndiGaming: at the end, link fights ganon and you win. sorry

        • +2

When did Nintendo start doing GOTY editions?

        • -1

          @tomkun01: wtf dude

      • If Switch sales bomb after the initial launch success, Nintendo will perform a price correction to build momentum like they did with the 3DS. The Switch is overpriced in Australia compared to other regions and there will be a major software drought after Zelda, so there is a plausible chance of this happening.

        • +1

I hope so, purchased it with CC price protection for 2 years!

        • @Soluble:

Two years? Is that really a thing?

        • @PainToad: https://financialservices.coles.com.au/credit-cards/about-ou…

I have the rewards mastercard, no annual fee with account cover plus. Doesn't cost anything providing you pay off everything you spend before the statement date.

(I should add the no annual fee on the rewards is for TMs)

        • @Soluble:

By 'doesn't cost anything' do you mean that you don't get charged the $89 Rewards MasterCard annual fee given you take up account cover plus? And that you don't pay for account cover plus given that you pay off your balance each month? Effectively costing $0 in total?

    • People waiting will regret it.

Inb4 WiiU, This time they will regret it.

    • +7

      less powerful then the ps3

      is it?

        • +2

It was a chart like this: http://kyokojap.myweb.hinet.net/gpu_gflops/
Switch (suspected ~350 gflops in handheld mode) isn't less powerful than the ps3 (~228 gflops).
It is however, substantially less powerful than the ps4.

        • +6

@queron: The Switch is suspected to use the Tegra X1 which according to that chart runs between 435-512 gflops. That's twice as powerful as the PS3's 228 gflops. I'd say that's pretty good for a handheld; anyone expecting PS4 level performance in that form factor is kidding themselves.

        • +6

          @mr_me450:

How many gflops is my Commodore 64?

        • +6

@jv: Such awesomeness can't be measured in gflops ;)

        • +2

Mate, do you even know what that means?

        • @mr_me450: Totally, an expectations of a handheld device performing on par with a home console is rediculous.
People need to think about the jump from the 3DS/Vita, not the fall from PS4 pro.
We don't expect phones to keep up with desktops.
I suspect we'll see them underclock the X1 slightly in handheld mode for power conservancy, but docked I think the revision of the X1 will see it outperform the 512 mark. All theoretical though…
Either way, you get what we've all seen, polished games on the go.
          Can't wait…

        • @jv:

C64 processing power is 64kb…..i guess thats like 64k flops

          0.000064 gflops?

        • @jv:

          I love the word flop

        • @queron: if performance is the only measure - consoles wouldn't exist. PC would win out easy

        • @jv: Commodore 64 is about 250,000 times slower than a Intel core i7 according to http://superuser.com/a/501478/8987

core i7 is around 50-90 GFLOPs according to http://www.overclock.net/t/947312/how-many-gflops-does-your-…

So that puts your Commodore 64 at around 0.002 GFLOPs (200 KFLOPs) - all in all, not a big flop

        • @3:

So that puts your Commodore 64 at around 0.002 GFLOPs

          What about my VIC-20 ?

        • +1

@jv: just a flop I seem to recall

        • -1

          @3:
You young things forgetting that floating point operations are relatively new additions. The Commodore 64 is 0 GFLOPS in hardware and emulating 32 bit floating point operations on an 8 bit integer CPU will be nasty. There is zero chance of getting 2 MFLOPS (in your 0.002 GFLOPS) or 200 KFLOPs from a 1MHz 8 bit integer CPU. Also remember that CISC CPUs of that era aren't pipelined or RISC based and many instructions take more than one cycle.

    • +13

That's inaccurate and even if it were we are talking about a handheld device not a dedicated home console so the two aren't really comparable.

      • -3

Sorry. Nintendo call this a home console, not a handheld.

      • This is both a handheld and a home console. Hence the name "Switch".

    • +5

      Please explain why this matters???

      Power doesn't = good

The PSVita was a powerhouse in its time..That worked out well.(p.s. I love my Vita still)

      • +7

Definitely true. In fact, until the PS4 the lower powered console each generation usually sells the most units. Wii sold more than PS3 and Xbox 360, 3DS more than Vita, DS more than PSP, PS2 more than Xbox and Gamecube, Playstation more than N64. Each one was the lowest powered for their generation, but each had the best content. Good games win out every time.

    • +7

How many ps3's could you play on the train?

    • Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but one thing Nintendo code monkeys do well is optimize thier code, which means no matter the power, they get the most out of it.

  • +2

My 2C: LOVE Nintendo. LOVE Zelda… but NEVER buy first iterations of consoles.

    • +13

In my experience you're pretty safe with Nintendo consoles in terms of reliablity. My launch Wii, Wii U, N64 and Super Nintendo are all still running fine to this day and have never needed repairs. There are the inevitable 1.5 versions like the 'New 3DS', or 'DSi' though I suppose.

      • +5

Yeah, but with the switch, I couldn't see any worthwhile upgrades coming to it. Switch mini sounds stupid as it defeats the purpose of a powerful portable handheld, and a switch xl sounds retarded, because who would want a 10 inch handheld device with them?

        • True, just seems to be the trend these days with the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S, then Scorpio. Here's hoping Nintendo bucks recent trends and keeps the Switch consistent from launch, like they have with their home consoles in the past.

        • @mr_me450: Yep, the only reason people play nintendo is for their franchises and family friendly platform, so if they were to upgrade the hardware in the switch, I couldn't see many people getting upset for it, as they would just get something more powerful for AAA games.

        • @mr_me450: Nintendo switch with bump, a feature that allows you to localy share and play games with others.

Its what makes their handhelds great.

        • Fair enough

        • the same people that carry their ipads around everywhere with them and use them for games and taking photos

        • Possible Switch pro
          - with Full HD screen, bigger battery (but same operating time)
          - better CPU to run the game faster by 10-15%
          - bigger internal space 128gig

      • +1

Prob new colours as well as a spec bump.

    • +2

      Life's too short too wait…..

    • Just wait a month or so after release for the Xmas bundles :P

    • +1

depends on how much you want your exploits

    • +7

That's a really intelligent way of determining if someone is an idiot!

    • +4

There is a difference between being frugal and being a jerk.

  • +1

I guess I'll be calling my local EB because they are next to a BigW.
Doubt they will honour the price though, probably complain that the item is a "bundle" as opposed to EB selling them separate.

    • +2

Why not just get it from Big W? Unless carrots. $39.95 off is a good deal for launch.

      • Because I have a pre-order with EBGames and I don't want to lose my spot nor do I want to spend time camping out.
I guess an option for me would be to go to EBGames on opening first (no camping) and see if they have any, if so buy from there, then cancel pre order at EB and buy the rest, i don't know EB's pre-order cancellation policy though.

edit: Called my local Big W, they said they would be getting some in, they couldn't tell me if they would be bundled with a game though, and also said pre-order deadline has been met.

I might rock up their on launch day (depending on line for EBGames) and check it out

    • +1

Yer eb won't be going near this

    • +2

EB don't match bundles. I tried a few stores with the PS4 Pro Big W bundle. I have doubts they will even let me price match BOTW to other stores at the midnight launch.

  • -7

According to this link https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/293627 Zelda BOTW is $75 at Big W, so the savings are $26 actually, not $39.95. Still not bad, but OP should be more honest.

EDIT: Just read the "no preorder" part on vooks. That kills it for me. I'm not standing waiting early in the morning for this. Not worth it.

    • +13

I stated it was $39.95 off the RRP. It is $39.95 off the RRP. Which part do you find 'dishonest'?

    • +3

To be fair it states off RRP.

If Nintendo doesn't have enough stock for everyone without a pre order on day one (all stores combined) then they have learnt nothing.

  • The price is right, remember PS4 and Xbox around same, we paying for same quality.

  • +2

Place your bets here for the Zelda day zero download patch size and/or Switch OS update size. I have a feeling Zelda is going to have a whopper patch.

    • Well im buying the digital copy so…….

      • -4

I just read the digital copy is larger than the space allocated. So you have to out it on an sd card.

        • +4

          Its 13.5gb

        • +1

          @britta:yeah correction its dragon quest that's 32gb

        • I already own a 64gb so I should be ok for this year.

  • -1

How do you convert US$299 into AUD$470?

    • +2

I guess they're selling to us with the american tax added.

    • $299 US = $389.54 Aus + 10% GST = $428.5
So costs us about $40 more?

      • +1

        Try yen then 29980 yen + 8%GST = 32378 yen = AUD$373, thats nearly $100 more

        • +2

          Try yen then 29980 yen + 8%GST = 32378 yen = AUD$373, thats nearly $100 more

Exactly. I don't believe we'll see prices like that until Christmas, if we are lucky.
I'm about to go to Japan, seriously considering buying it there thanks to the lack of region-locking. Awaiting reviews after launch. $40 off RRP is still a bumming in my opinion.

        • @kingxeratul: Just make sure the AC adapter is 100-240 V !

        • @kingxeratul:
I have a mate living over there who offered to buy me one as he's coming back soon, I said I'll think about it then they sold out almost straight away =(
