Not much of a bargain if your electricity ends up costing you more

Agreed. Energy Australia is 2.4x the cost of AGL in my area when averaging my annual gas and power usages. And AGL isn't even the cheapest.

      • how do you compare the rates? I used one of the comparison sites and EnergyAustralia was the winner. I am with Energy Australia and was wondering if i could save some money on my bills by switching. they do give me 18% and 15% discounts on electricity and gas respectively if bills are paid on time.

        • I created an excel spreadsheet with my average monthly usage.

Then I entered 10 energy companies rates and discounts (whether usage or supply and usage)

Then worked out a $ value depending on a varying rates. All the usage rates are generally structure differently i.e. Monthly steps, fortnightly stepped rates, flat rates or daily steps. Which is deliberate so it's difficult to compare.

  • Does anyone know how much (in monetary terms) is 20,000 points equivalent to?

    • +2

Depends on how you value it, what you plan to use it on.

      On gift cards, it's ~$110.
If you "sell" your points (technically against program's T&Cs so beware), then ~$200.
If you use it on flights, then anywhere from $200 to potentially $1000, some say.

      • wow I see. Not bad. Thanks

  • thanks for sharing

  • Not a bad promo it seems, but can't see the actual rates they charge listed clearly. Might look into it later.

  • Not sure if you can sign up for 1 month to get the points then leave. Their rates are high compare to others.

    • Please be mindful of Disconnect Fees. It can be from $40 to $ 190 .

So no joining or exit fees but Disconnect fees.

Same goes with credit card. there may be no annual fees but you may end up in paying Reward fees.

      • Ok that I didn't know about as I have never been charged. Thanks for the heads up. Will definitely ask if I do join.

        • Let us know your findings. May be others get an idea as well

        • @vr4indian:

I need an electricity account for a rental property that will be vacant for a short period in between tenants, I'm hoping there is no such fee if the account is simply churned to a new provider / whoever the new tenant chooses, 20k points would be great.

Just looked as prices, in my area for example,
    Energy Australia is 83.9c a day + 26.7c a KW
    Red Energy is 74.6c a day + 22.5c a KW

So much better value to go with Red Energy even with the Virgin Points.

  • Also, consider the below-average ranking by Green Electricity Guide:

"It is the second biggest carbon polluter in Australia – thanks to its coal plants in Victoria and NSW – and has the highest emissions intensity (carbon pollution per unit of energy generated) of the big three retailers."

    Cons:
    * Offers to solar customers substantially more expensive than offers to nonsolar customers
    * Investments in coal power stations and CSG, and emissions intensity above NEM average
    * Supported weakening of the RET

  • Nothing for existing customers? :(

    • There is. You don't get as much as a new customer though. It's in the FAQ https://www.energyaustralia.com.au/velocity-faqs
