Did you receive a new key for Windows 10?

      • -3

Did you receive a new key for Windows 10?

Of course not. It's a free upgrade to a windows 7 or 8.1 licence.

Note the word "upgrade" has more than twice the number of letters in it compared to the word "new". This is a hint that they are not the same word.

        • What if I need to do a fresh reinstallation in a new laptop? How do I do that with the upgraded OS?

        • -1

          @bargainaus:

What if I need to do a fresh reinstallation in a new laptop? How do I do that with the upgraded OS?

Honestly, you need to do your own research if you actually care…

You cannot do reinstallation of an upgraded OS onto a new laptop using the same original key.

You get a free ONE TIME UPGRADE of your Win 7 or 8 or 8.1 licence to Windows 10 on one machine. Once you upgrade, you cannot use the same Win 7/8 key to do another upgrade on a different machine.

It's a Free upgrade to, and not a licence to Windows 10. Not sure why you are not understanding this point.

Irrespective of whether your old Win7 or 8 licence was OEM, Retail or whatever… your upgrade to Windows 10 is a one time one time upgrade to an OEM licence (locked to the first machine you perform it on). This is not a new licence in addition to your old Win 7/8 licence either.

HOWEVER… if it's a significant hardware upgrade rather than a complete new machine, then you can use this method…

          https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/20530/windows-10-re…

There are ways around some or all of this, however the bottom line is that getting a Free Upgrade is not the same as getting a new OEM licence (however it's very similar in that it's locked to the first PC) which is not the same as a Retail licence (which you own and can transfer).

        • @llama: well, in that case I'll buy one of these OEM keys then, the gamesmen deal looks positive.

        • After you upgrade to Win10 Microsoft make a significant effort to prevent you from finding your Win 10 license key, but it is possible.

Made a note of my new Win10 key after installing, not sure if I'll be able to use it to reinstall when I finally do replace the hardware I have now, but that's probably a couple of years away anyhoo.

          @Gronk:

After you upgrade to Win10 Microsoft make a significant effort to prevent you from finding your Win 10 license key, but it is possible.

What you think you find is not a licence key.

You have a "Digital Entitlement" and not a licence key. This is stored on the Microsoft Validation Servers, not your machine.

Windows 10 creates a "checksum" of the characteristics of your computer hardware, and that is transmitted to the Validation Servers when you first install the OS and validate it. The server keeps a record of that checksum, and each time it needs to check the validity of your Windows it creates the same checksum from whatever hardware you have installed then sends that for verification by the online Verification Servers.

          A) For the Upgrade, there is no key for that kind of Windows licence - it is a "unique checksum" that is created by and linked to your computer.

You cannot transfer this licence unless you use workarounds mentioned above - basically, you need to do incremental upgrades of components with new online verification in between each step, so that the changes are not significant enough each time to invalidate that transfer.

          B) For an OEM licence, you have a licence key that is transferrable and usable many times… UP UNTIL it gets used to verify a Win 10 installation. The first time it gets used, that key gets locked to the machine's checksum in exactly the same way as A).

You usually can transfer these to a new machine by calling M$, providing that the "new thing" is replacing a component that has failed. So, replacing the motherboard with same model would fail online verification, but would pass when you did it over the phone with M$ Support. You cannot use the old OEM key to replace an old laptop to a new laptop, as that is a complete new device.

OEM keys are dirt cheap anyway, so you might as well just request a new valid and legit OEM key with the new machine.

          B) For a Retail licence key, you have the exact same thing as B, except that you can contact Microsoft to disable the old checksum which will allow you to then re-use the licence key to verify a new machine. If you don't contact M$ first, the Retail Key acts the same as an OEM key and is locked to one machine forever.

None of the M$ keys or licences will allow validation on more than one machine at a time. You must validate online, and the M$ Validation server does the hardware check that I mentioned - as soon as that happens, your "licence" is locked to that machine. If you don't go online to validate, your Win 10 will still work (almost 100%), however you don't even need any key to operate it that way.

You don't need any licence key to install Windows 10, and you can get the ISO from Microsoft (so no need to use Torrents etc).

If you don't care about legality, then there are several ways around most of the limits I mention above. This is not the place to discuss that. The most important thing to understand is that the "naughty methods" don't require a valid key - therefore if you are using a OEM or Retail key that breaks the M$ Licencing agreement (like this deal) then you might as well just break the licence agreement with a free method.

It's certainly not the Ozbargain way to pay for things that you don't need to pay for. If you buy and use one of these "online keys" then you are breaking the licence agreement, hence you are paying too much for an invalid licence and hence why these "Win 10 licence" deals are not a bargain.

Be aware that once upgraded to Win10, your hardware ID is recorded on the Microsoft servers and you actually never need a key for that device again.

You can re-install Windows 10, skip the part where it asks for a key, and it will activate fine.

Been through this a few times…….

    • Excellent! Thanks for the link. Win10 will quite happily work indefinitely in an unactivated state as long as you're willing to put up with the 'Activate Windows 10 now' message in the corner of the screen, which I've been doing for months now. I downloaded the upgrade tool and ran it, and it didn't even download any further upgrades or any installation files. It simply popped up a dialogue box with 'Thanks for installing the latest version of Windows 10' and now the nag prompt in the corner is gone.

"If it seems too good to be true, it probably is".

    Be warned…

    • Lottery winners know that very well.

      • Yeah but Tatts don't sell their credit card and personals details to criminals.

        • Not if you use PayPal and fake details.

  • Where is the cheapest legitimate place to buy Windows 10 Pro?

    • +1

      Microsoft.

    • Directly from Microsoft or from Shopping Express or IJK for $228, which is insane

      • +1

Gotta recoup all those free copies some how! ;P

    • If you have a family member who is a teacher or a student or works for government they can often get a cheap key for Windows or Office. I just bought a Windows 10 key for $25 through Education Qld.
      Differs by state though.

      • Student discount in SA is 10% discount to retail according to M$.

    • This deal is still on but now just under $20.

Legitimate? Dunno but it worked for me and didn't seem to attract the negs that this deal has received.

This is the site that 'sells' PS4 games by putting them on a dummy account then giving you the login details to download, 'share' and own.

Surprised they haven't been shut down.

  • Do these generally expire if you don't activate them straight away?

    • Do these generally expire if you don't activate them straight away?

A genuine and legit key doesn't expire.

A shonky key might, since it's likely that a duplicate will get sold/issued sooner or later. So if the other person gets in first, you miss out.

  • Microsoft, Apple, Sony all these giant corporation already have eyes and its intelligence dept a.k.a legal team to report back to them. Because end of the day its revenue to them, allowing small fries to get thru and sue the ones who are causing the major loss.

And everyone who found it too good to be true is probably right as its obtain illegally or it could be a bait as a new way to study society/consumer behaviors.

Nobody or corp. is that dumb to let it go when its bread and butter depends on the product.

Now the question is are you one of these people who knows it but ignores it as its super cheap. Its different from p2p this time they will have your details as its your personal payment. Lol.

Sorry if I destroyed the fun as me brain is at abnormal stage due to too much free time.

    • Pretty much this.

MS wants everyone on W10 anyway, which is why they offered the upgrade for free in the first place. Revenue is the last of their concerns.

That's why they don't shut down these sites. As long as the key activates without a hack, MS still sees it as a win. Once they have everyone on this platform, they can control your experience with future updates, and build up the W10 store, which they are hoping to challenge Steam one day with.

Or just use KMSpico if you're ethically pliable, like me.

    • +1

It actually didn't work for me. Rather than try to keep up with the competing exploits/patches I just bought an OEM key. Definitely worth the $17.

      • +4

You got ripped oem key was $8.89 time to hand in your ozbargain card lol

        • It might not have been OEM actually, and it was the cheapest I could find at the time. I couldn't leave the PC sitting there doing nothing while I waited for a bargain!

      • Version 10.1.9 has always worked for me.

    • -2

It's not the same as having a copy that activates.

A hack like this or Toolkit just injects some code before booting to make Windows think it is activated. If you run a command line to check how many days of activation left before you must activate again, it will be anywhere from 30 days to 180 days. Every time you reboot that resets, so the number never goes down. But technically it isn't permanently activated.

A key like this will activate on MS's server and will be seen as legit not on your end but MS's end also. And it won't have an expiry date before reactivation is required. It also doesn't require a process running in the background that not only flags you as a pirate with neon signs if you're audited, but uses up considerable system resources.

If your options are piracy or $8.39 for a legitimate key of questionable origins, get the key. It should be an easy decision.

      • -1

Thanks for the mansplain, I had no idea how KMSpico or OEM keys worked.

        • -1

It wasn't to educate you on how they work. It was to explain how one is much superior to the other, which you seem to have missed. You proposed using a crack as an alternative, equating them as being the same. They aren't. Ethically? Maybe, assuming these keys are stolen. Functionality? No. One is seen as legit in both ends, the other requires a crack that only makes it look legit on your end.

Most AV suites I have used immediately detect these things as malware off the bat and put them into quarantine, so that's already a dealbreaker.

        • @lostn: Appreciate the mansplain about the previous mansplain but you can stop now. I've been utilising software cracks/patches for many years.

i bought forza horizon 3 when it first launched as an xbox account from this site and 1 month later the account had the game removed because it was purchased with what im guessing was a stolen credit card. i asked for a refund and they said no so i filed a paypal dispute which got my money back luckily. id steer clear of this site.

    • +1

      Some people are just dumb.

They think all they'll lose is $8.89. In reality, their personal and financial details are being compromised over $8.89.

  • If your'e not happy with this deal you can buy keys from ebay from Computers-Reborn-LTD . i paid $6 for mine " havent used it yet " but if it was dodgy they wouldnt still be on ebay ymmv.

  • I'm still running Windows vista. Is there anyway i can install windows 10 from an ISO file (e.g. using ultra iso to open it) and keep all my current files?

    • The real question is, what are you still doing on Vista? You actually used that POS for 11 years?

  • +4

    Dodgy

  • Microsoft doesn't earn money from Windows OS now. Do you think they even bother to keep a task force to crack this down? If their automatic registration system ever said you are activated, there is nothing to worry about.

    • +3

They earn money from big businesses and corporates (education, government, retail) who runs Microsoft software.

They earn very little from end users like us, and very few people find the need to really buy an OS outright because most computers already include an operating system.

People like us and tech savvy DIY builders account only for a very small fraction of total Windows software sales, Microsoft doesn't really care if you or I pirate one copy of Windows. They do care if you're doing it on a larger scale.

      • Damn right… MS rather you be in their ecosystem than another.

Using Windows might bring in side revenue from the App store.

Do we need to keep posting these cheap and questionable Windows deals here?
Just do a search on Reddit and there are always a few sellers of these cheap Windows keys.

  • +2

Quick Google search for psngames has multiple reports of credit card theft/recycling buyers credit cards to give away PSN credit. And providing stolen PS accounts. Just plain dodgy.

  • +1

Help find yourself an .iso than keep dodgy businesses going

    • The ISO is supplied for free by Microsoft. Completely open, available to everyone.

This business is only selling licence keys. You also need the Microsoft ISO to use that.

  • Bought one. It is working. Cheap enough to take a punt on, even if it does expire at some point down the line. I have no great desire to give Microsoft anymore money than I need to.

  • payment via paypal won't go through. Tried both fox and chrome. I'm beginning to see why some people are sceptical about the site.

  • So posting deals on technically unlicensed software is a thing on ozbargain, eh? And paying for unlicensed software is another thing people are doing? Lol

    • So posting deals on technically unlicensed software is a thing on ozbargain, eh?

Yep, apparently so. This is because "there is no proof that it's not 'valid'" even though it clearly breaks the supplier's licencing terms.

And paying for unlicensed software is another thing people are doing? Lol

That is the funniest thing for me too. It's like "Well, I paid $[insert some value here] so that means I did the right thing of paying for it, so I have every right to use this invalid licence".

That said - for myself it's a toss up. If paying under $10 for an install that works then this is actually worth it for me, as it's a quicker and cleaner way than the method that I use (which is 100% free but takes me longer).

      • Howbout paying for Netflix via a VPN to get a cheaper price? Is it also invalid because it's technically against the ToS?

        • Howbout paying for Netflix via a VPN to get a cheaper price?

That would be equally stupid if there was also another way to get Netflix for free.

One you are breaking the ToS to get a cheaper price, you might as well break the ToS and use the CHEAPEST price.

  • These guys are known to sell dodgy PSN games by putting them on new accounts and getting buyers to login and port the games across. Sounds shady as (profanity). 1/10. Would not trust.

  • Looks dodge

  • Why is the Windows 10 Home OEM ($9.21) more expensive than the Pro ($6.80)?

    • supply and demand. They must have generated too many pro keys.

      • Or maybe because of lower desirability, that the Home keys are rarer. LOL

  • +2

I don't know about you guys, but I would totally download a car if I could..

    • soon we can with 3D printing

  • Can confirm it works. I bought the retail version for 15USD and am currently upgrading my Windows 10 home to Windows 10 Pro

  • I bought a Windows 10 Retail and it activated without any problem. I am thinking about buying another one just for the hell of it :P.

  • illegal copy

  • I went to buy one of these but the PayPal link had me signing up for an ongoing subscription. I was not happy giving them authorization to take money from my PayPal when they feel like it.

    • There were two PayPal links…I think the one on the RH side is the best for one-off purchases via this site?

Better to use a credit card such as 28 Degrees (nil conversion fee), though, I reckon. I assume they'll take less of a clip than PayPal.
