Im hanging out for them NY deals

  • +1

I can see these getting a fair bit cheaper over the next few months.

Can't find people looking for one way tickets?

  • What's the best way to go about getting a one way to LA so that I can make my way to Hawaii and fly back from there? The one way tickets are usually just as much as return flight and multi city stops aren't much better.

I spent ages looking for the same thing. Ended up working out cheapest to go MEL-LAX-HNL on United, and then HNL-MEL on Jetstar. Ended up being about $1600pp total with bags etc., and that could have been cheaper but I needed to do the Jetstar flight during school holidays.

    • I think the cheapest way is to do what JKC2289 suggested - return flight to Hawaii on Jetstar especially when on sale, and get a return flight LA-Hawaii on a domestic US carrier.

  • inst it cheaper going to Hawaii on one of jetstar, etc's flash sale deals and then catching another flight from there?

    • Flights to Hawaii from the mainland aren't actually all that cheap, plus odds are you'll have to pay for luggage on both legs which can end up costing a bomb.

  • Anyone know when the deals for October-November usually start coming up?

  • I got confused sometimes about Los Santo or Los Angeles… Tell me I am not the only one

Was in LA earlier this week, bargain tip for getting around especially from LAX….Uber! Uber guys will pick you up straight from Tom Bradley international terminal, head to the upper level, walk to the pickup area with the large number '3' and fire up the Uber App. There are Ubers and Lyft cars everywhere. Longest I waited for an Uber was about 4 mins! only saw a couple of taxis but it seemed like every second car had the sticker on the windscreen!

Second tip for LA is that there is nowhere at LAX to store bags. Rather than sit around LAX all day with the bags waiting for the return flight to OZ, I found a luggage storage mob 2 miles from LAX. The cost for them to come to LAX and pickup our bags was USD$88, if we got the Uber to the storage place, dropped off the bags, kept going then picked them up again on the way bag the storage was $27 for the day. Money well spent for a day spent in a bar in Santa Monica rather than sitting on our bags at LAX!

So true! Uber is the way to get around. There is no public transport in LA. Everyone drives. Uber is a great choice, although hiring a convertible mustang is more fun if you spend a few days…

    • For those who have been to LA before - Would you recommend hiring a car as an alternative to Uber?

      • Highly recommend if you're going to be there for a few days. We hired a car in LA for 4 days for $180 with Alamo which included comprehensive insurance with no excess. Street parking was also very easy!

      • Just be mindful about driving on the wrong side of the road.

Lookout for those four way intersections with 4 stop signs! Apparently everyone is meant to take a turn at going, probably not in LA but if you are ever in Texas I make it a rule to always give way to anyone in a large pickup truck with a gun rack mounted on the rear window! The rule where it is OK to turn right at a red light if it is safe to proceed is also a bit odd the first couple of times!

    • Thank you so much for the tips! Would the tips re: Uber be the same in San Fran by any chance?

      • I wasnt in San Fran this time but i would imagine so. We used plenty of Ubers in Las Vegas, even from the big Casinos on the strip. Uber drivers told us that some of the Casinos had deals going with the Cab Companies and didnt like Ubers picking up from their reception area etc. We got by OK and Ubers were cheaper than cabs, also avoided the awkward for Aussies 'tip' calculations as well. Uber just charges your Card, no need to have the embarrassing moment trying to work out what you should tip, no need to tip on Uber. Some of the Uber drivers had 'tip jars' in their cars where you could slip a couple of dollar bills but not necessary.

    • Additional tip, dont forget to link your Uber account to your 28 degrees card rather than your regular bank card to avoid crippling bank fees for all of your $10 Uber trips!

      • What Sim card did u get that's best for travelling the USA for data and Uber?

        • I already have an Optus plan through my work. Optus had a roaming pack for $10 a day that I bought prior to departure. The data allowance was pretty low so in general I had roaming data turned off and I downloaded most of my stuff via wifi in cafes etc. For Uber I turned off data to most apps and only had roaming data on for Uber and a couple of other Apps that I needed (maps etc).

      • Just signed up for a Bankwest Zero Platinum - Will be linking that card to my uber account. umm lets just say If If I was going to choose the car rental option, is there a lot of street parking or parking lots around and if so, is there anything I should be wary about when parked in LA? And what is the cost like to park there? is it as expensive as in Australia? To park in Sydney these day it cost an arm and a leg.

        Thanks in advance.

  • Rental cars in the USA are so cheap, if you are confident with driving on the other side of the road it makes a lot more sense to rent a car than rely on cabs/Uber

    • Its not that bad, after 5 mins your brain has reset since youre on the other side of the car it seems more natural. Also, follow the leader is preprogrammed into our brains.

Just remember left is the fast lane there and I wouldnt hire a car in NYC
