Coles Traditional High Top Bread @ $2.50 Everyday Price

230

If you like the Helgas bread range just a note that the Coles Traditional High Top bread range selling for just $2.50 is exactly the same. This was pointed out to me by the Helga's rep when I bumped into him in the store one day.
I have tried both the Soy & Linseed and the Mixed Grain and sure enough they are identical.
Great money saver if you can find your choice of bread in stock as they run out quickly.
Note: Not all the Helga's range is duplicated within the Coles Traditional High Top range. Only the 5 most popular ones. Plenty to choose from!

So you know more than the Helga's rep?
You have chemically analyzed both to prove me and the Helga's rep wrong?
Pls come forth with your evidence.

    • I have another saying "A fool and their money are easily parted"

      That was years ago.
"In 2012, a ruckus erupted when it was revealed that Coles "freshly baked in-store" bread was actually par-baked bread made in Ireland." https://www.choice.com.au/food-and-drink/bread-cereal-and-gr…

Proof that "High Top" range was part of that legal action over false claims?? From my reading, it was the just specialty breads that were par-baked.

no it wasnt. completely different bread.

The OP states two products are EXACTLY THE SAME - yet 2 posters state that not only is each product composed of different ingredients but the place of manufacture etc is also completely different……..both the OP & the responders can't be correct therefore someone is massively wrong. :-/

Well the Helga's bread rep knows whats exactly going on. He was delivering both on the same tray.
You put them side by side and they look exactly the same. You eat them side by side and they taste exactly the same.
Just goes to show you that you cant help some people. All they want to do is rubbish you. And usually its obvious they have no idea what they are talking about.

I'd say that with all due respect thats not exactly a sure thing. The rep could be a fool, playing a joke on you or just misinformed.

Surely this is pretty damn simple…..compare the ingredients - if they're EXACTLY THE SAME (and thats key here as we're not saying similar, kinda like or inspired by) then they should be the EXACT SAME ingredients in the EXACT SAME order. Could it be any easier?

I don't doubt that for many folks it will be good bread and a very good price BUT if you go stating that it's nothing less than the identical more expensive product ONLY DIFFERENCE being the different packaging then this needs to be correct & pass basic tests e.g ingredients & order etc.

Am sure someone will be able to confirm - I'd be a tad surprised if they were EXACTLY the same - I'd imagine Coles would have asked them to make a product along the same lines as their flagship product BUT to a certain much lower price point - which would have meant that they'd make multiple changes whilst keeping it very similar.

Thus it might be hard to 100% confirm even by ingredients matching as different qualities of flour, yeast etc can all make significant differences to end product.

Nice find anyway - so I'm NOT trying to crap on OP's find - but specifically stating something is exact needs to pass basic litmus tests. :-)

I worked at Tip Top years ago packing bread and cakes. I can confirm the cakes coming off the line were packed as Coles brand or Tip Tip brand randomly. The exact same cakes went in both packs. Actually, the only difference between them is the sticker. It is too much work for the factory to complete 2 runs of these small run products. They do one run and all products are identical.

I can't confirm the same thing is happening with Helga's but after working at Tip Top it would not surprise me at all.

@Perthguy: Yes. Many people here do not understand the production process. They do not understand economies of scale and economics.
When Coles places an additional order for cakes , bread etc (identical line to national brand) but to be placed in their own wrapper the manufacturer can do this at minimal cost. In fact it significantly reduces the overall per unit cost of the production run. hence can be sold to Coles at a much lower cost even though its exactly the same except for the wrapper. Its common practice for "home brand" goods to "piggy back" on national brand production runs in order to get them at a lower cost.
To stop the production line, do a full clean up, and then change ingredients and wrapping is an incredibly costly process which most here do not understand. It would actually push the cost up through the roof.
Most contributors here do NOT appreciate that the ingredient cost in making bread is a very small portion of the overall cost of marketing, producing and delivering the goods. Then there machinery and maintenance costs, setup costs, packaging, wages, administration overheads, property rent and some room for profit. Plenty more i could add.
Hence changing the ingredients achieves virtually no reduction in cost compared with "piggy back" orders.
I trust this helps our friends here to understand how Coles can sell exactly the same product as Helgas but in their own wrapper for $1.00 less per loaf.

      • Hahaha the rep doesnt know whats going on, the bread scientists (Was rob and damo) know whats going on at goodman and fielder.

Im a baker by trade and used to work with the goodman and fielder bread scientists, they also engineer the greens cake mixes and a lot of other things like the Allied Mills(owned by goodman and fielder) premix flour which Coles uses as does woolworths.

Helga's and Coles bread doesnt contain the same ingredients however, few people might not notice a difference besides (improver, fat levels, salt levels, sugar levels and preservatives used)

Helga's is a multi million dollar brand for goodman and fielder, no amount of money would get them to rebrand it as coles.

Its like saying coles 75c loafs are the same as Aldi which are all made by tiptop but mainly Davies Bakeries in broadmeadows. Every state is different.

Aldi equivalent is $2.29 but nice to know OP.

  • I don't know if they are "exactly" the same, but for my money ($2.50), the Coles one is pretty damn good.

    • +1

They are not "exactly" the same, but for my money (?) the one that comes out of my oven is pretty damn good.

    • Thanks. Best home brand bread money can buy
BTW - which one is your preference?

      • Prefer the multigrain. Didn't much like the Soy+Linseed.

  • The ALDI wholemeal has a different taste to the Abbots wholemeal even though they have the same maker.

  • Anyway for those who are happy to accept this tip for what it is, lucky you!
Problem is that Coles does not order much of their own Traditional High Top bread.
So getting hold of them is the issue.
    Good luck…enjoy !
